Hi everyone! My name's Yonah and I'm new here. Is this like writing letters to people, but faster?

[ Then there's a sudden switch to the voice option. Typing on the phone's a little harder for her, at the moment. She's putting what she learned during her introduction to smartphones to use.

Anyone listening will hear a young girl's voice over their communicators. She sounds pretty thrilled over her very first smartphone. Oh, and talking to a bunch of strangers. She really misses her Dad right now. ]

Can everyone hear me? I see so many letters on this network thingy. Some of them are kinda hard to read. Maybe someone can help me read them! We can read it together! Dad used to read me his letters whenever he came home-

[ Suddenly, several seconds of raspy coughing. Though she clasps her hand over her mouth, the muffled coughs are still audible. At least, she makes a quick recovery and starts talking again: ]

...Sorry. I'm okay! Um... I just wanna talk to everyone...

[He goes straight to video, rather than voice.]

You have difficulty reading? [That's what he gathers at first, before going on to the rest of what she's said, ignoring the cough.]

You'll have no trouble talking to people with this device, at least. And there are a good number of people already here.

Hi! [ And she switches to video for him now. Yay, a person! Video is neat. ]

Sometimes! But I got invited to go to the school here. So... maybe I'll get better if I study really hard.

[At least she's having an easier time adjusting to technology than he had.]

I'm sure that they'll see to it that you're properly caught up before increasing your study load.

I've never been to school before. Catching up might take a little longer for me... that's okay.

[ She doesn't seem afraid about this new opportunity though. She'll get to be with other people and it'll be fun too, right? ]

Do you go to the school?

[Normally, Frankenstein gets vaguely annoyed by all the random useless stupid conversations on the network. Being social: still a new thing for him. But hey, he can make exceptions.]

You can't read? [Seriously, he thought he came from a pretty crappy place.]

No, not very well... my village didn't have a school. Dad just taught me whenever he could.

[ Which wasn't a lot, considering how little days he stayed home. On the bright side: ]

But I get to go to school now!

There are plenty of people who might offer to help outside of school as well.

[At least she's not afraid, that's important.]

No, I tested as too advanced for placement in their 'middle school' and was offered a place at the university, which I denied. I'm too accustomed to private tutoring,

[Truly, he questions the wisdom in the people running this place bringing an obviously sickly child through the portal. Especially, from the sound of it, without her parents.]

You are clearly ill, I do not know what you expect to accomplish if you deny this fact. I cannot say to know what sort of world you hail from, Yonah, but in a place such a this, a great nexus of cultures, technology, and magic, I would feel safe in my estimation that a cure can be found.
[And he'll find it his dang self if he has to.]

However, no one can help you if you do not communicate what ails you.

[Oh hey, it sounds like someone who might be around his age. He's never really had friends his own age before. The coughing gives him pause for concern though.]

Are you okay...?

[ ... Oof, she sounds young. Is she by herself...? ]

—Hey. I don't mind talking, if you'd like. Did you catch a cold, though?

[ Forget her sickness. She hates thinking about it and burdening others with it. She'd rather talk about other subjects. Her cough isn't as severe as when she was back home, at least. ]

My case worker brings me medicine. It's not a cure... but it makes me feel better. I think the people at that hospital place are working to find something even more better for me. It's okay!

Oh, hello!

[ She greets him, friendly and acting almost like she wasn't coughing just seconds ago. There were kids around her age in her village, but she never got to go outside and play with them. They visited sometimes though. ]

Yeah, I'm okay. I've had this cough for awhile...

[ She easily switches to video to match up. ]

It's not really a cold. Some other stupid sickness. Don't worry, I'm fine now.

[ She stopped coughing for now!! It's okay!! ]

[ And so blase about it, too... Well, she'd know more about it than he does, even if it sounded far from pleasant. ]

Okay. Just know if you need anything, there are people here to help.

Where the fuck are you from?

[ Oops. Probably shouldn't curse in front of a kid. Too late. Still, he should try to, you know, rein in the f-bombs.]

School here, you mean?

Have you gone to the hospital here? They might be able to help you. They helped me when I first got here.

A village. Yeah, the school here.

[ ~~"Nier's village"~~. It didn't actually have a name... ]

You probably shouldn't swear.

[ Just saying! She doesn't sound that bothered by it. ]

I did when I arrived. I have some medicine to make the hurting go away and my cough isn't as bad as it was back home.

[ Just a temporary solution though. ]

They said they're working on something better for me... I think I'll be fine!

[ She'd rather talk to people and forget about it. That's not going to help you recover, Yonah... ]

Yeah, I know! I can't believe I'm talking to so many people right now!

Wow, you must be super smart! I wish I had tutoring... home was too lonely most of the time.

I suppose I am. It's very common for the sons of nobles to have a governess, or several, rather than attending school.

[He can kind of understand the lonely part but Soma would probably empathize more with her.]

At least you'll be able to make friends here.

[ Dropping it is an option, at least; he's not typically one to be pushy, and it's evident she's been dealing with it for a while, anyway. So— ]

Never had a phone before now?

No... I didn't even know stuff like this existed. I wish I had one back home.

[ Then maybe Dad would actually reply every day to his mail. Although, she's not sure if she wants to go back home. Dad could come to the Quarantine instead and get his own phone. ]

Hff. Wonder what nonsense [See? He didn't say 'crap'! He's learning!] they're teaching you.

Yeah. Probably.

[What can he say? She's right. ]

That's good. I hope you feel better.

[He feels like he should ask if she's referring to a case worker and the hospital here... But as boisterously over the top as he is, he's perceptive enough to tell when someone's trying to dismiss a subject. He won't forget, but perhaps another time.]

I too, come from a world that lacks this sort of technology. It is useful to be able to communicate with so many people so quickly, isn't it?
[His tone is genuine, here. As much as he doesn't fully get it, he is pretty jazzed about all this modern technology.]

[ Aha. Once more, it's someone who isn't familiar with modern tech. This is starting to become a lot more common than he anticipated, especially for being in a city as advanced as Riverview. ]

You can have it while you're here, at least. I don't know if it'd work if you took it back home, though.

[ Does she even have, like... electricity..... ]
