They can be! My brother was a State Alchemist who worked for the military
but that was a while ago.
Alchemists in general work for the people
Because we can do alchemy, it's equivalent exchange
that we use that power to help others.

Here, I'll show you real quick.


[ and he switches to video, which shows a young man around 14 sitting at a table, surrounded by stacks of books. one is open before him, but he pushes it aside and grabs a sheet of paper. he sets it in front of him and then quickly draws a transmutation circle on it. ]

This is a transmutation circle, which is needed for all transmutations. Now I'll turn the paper into a folded crane.

[ he presses his palms to the edges of the circle and there's a burst of yellow and blue light that crackles around the page. soon, out of the paper, as it shrinks in size, a paper crane appears. when the transmutation finishes, he holds it up and then clicks the video off again. ]

That's pretty much it.
But Brother and I can do much larger and more complex transmutations too.
