I don't know how many people celebrate this, but today is Pi Day. Pi is a mathematical constant, with the first three numbers being three, one and four. Most people just celebrate by baking or eating pies. I made one for my daughter's math class.

Pi itself is actually very fascinating, though. It was originally defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference, but now it's used in many formulas in math and physics. Its decimal presentation never settles into a permanent repeating pattern.

But, ah... I'm sure most people just care about the pie.

As fascinating as that was, you might get more attention if you had actually used a pie in your explanation.

[He's... not that great at the helping thing yet.]

Maybe so.

It would certainly get people excited for both. You might even have been able to cut a deal with a bakery for a demonstration, teach people something and they get business. You get some kind of discount.

[jolting]

I'm not usually the kind of person to organize things like that.

[sweetlies]

A shame. Perhaps if we're both here next year, we can plan something along those lines. I don't run a bakery but I'm sure I can form a partnership with one.

[jolting]

I'm not really a baker; I just cook for my daughter. But I'm sure you can find someone who would help with all that.

[sweetlies]

Oh, I wasn't suggesting you bake but you sounded as if you could give a lesson on pie and applying it to any pies in a bakery. [Ha.] I'm rubbish when it comes to cooking myself and I'll never have the patience to teach.

[jolting]

Not sure I'd have the patience, either. I only teach Lucy so far.

[sweetlies]

Better practice that I have. I'm afraid I haven't had the opportunity to make her acquaintance.

And I realize that I have been terribly rude. I'm Ciel Phantomhive.

[he hesitates only a moment] Doctor Frankenstein.

[No judgement. Even if the name is familiar.]

[how anticlimactic. He's going to start using his real name more often]

[Ciel is good at taking all the 'fun' out of things like this. It also helps that he only has passing knowledge of the book, being more interest in Doctor Arthur's work or Poe.]

I hope you have a pleasant Pi day. We don't have it where I'm from. Or perhaps it's simply too soon.

Every world is different, with its own celebrations and traditions. What's fascinating about a place like this is that it allows for people to learn about these other worlds.

[sweetlies]

It is, I'm finding this world interesting. Although the month celebrations do become a bit exhausting, it is nice to see that everyone has so much to celebrate.

[jolting]

The celebrations are definitely... unique. Back in my town, we had something called Miners'Day. Very low-key compared to the holidays here, but it was a town tradition.

[sweetlies]

Miners Day? [What?

He's actually curious. How do you celebrate something like that?]

Would I be inconveniencing you if I asked you to tell me about it?

[jolting]

It was some thing where the miners would trade coal for things. The nuns use it as a yearly fund raiser.

[sweetlies]

[Hm]

That certainly makes sense. How did the nuns start using it for a fundraiser though? Do they keep the spirit of it alive?

[jolting]

They sell candles. The whole town loved it, though. It's just a time for us all to come together. Like a big but low-key community party.

[he's probably not explaining it well (but tbh the show didn't even explain it that well)]

[sweetlies]

[Better than Ciel can do by trying to guess. (And, really, it would.)]

It certainly sounds like a good way to encourage togetherness. We have some festivals something like that in London but I don't much care for them.

[jolting]

Hm. Maybe it's different in big cities. Storybrooke's a small town and we all know each other, so the festivals are more like hanging out with your friends.

[he smirks] We can even turn two people trapped in a mine into a party. Once they were freed, of course.

[sweetlies]

Oh, no doubt. We had the Frozen Fair in London but on my estate, we would celebrate smaller events. Like the St. Michael's Festival.

[He blinks and then laughs softly.] I would be worried otherwise! Unless they were wretched people, then I could hardly blame you if you had celebrated before they were saved.

[jolting]

What's the Frozen Fair?

[sweetlies]

It's held whenever the Thames freezes. Festival stalls are set up and ice sculptures made.
