I don't know how many people celebrate this, but today is Pi Day. Pi is a mathematical constant, with the first three numbers being three, one and four. Most people just celebrate by baking or eating pies. I made one for my daughter's math class.

Pi itself is actually very fascinating, though. It was originally defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference, but now it's used in many formulas in math and physics. Its decimal presentation never settles into a permanent repeating pattern.

But, ah... I'm sure most people just care about the pie.

I'm not sure that kind of pie would've gone over nearly as well in a class of eight-year-olds.

I dunno, have you ever seen an eight year old? They'll eat anything really.

(Though he's right, a sweet pie would probably be more exciting. It's the sugar.)

I've mostly interacted with kids as their pediatrician before I got Lucy.

[kievs]

Lucy?

Is she a little girl, with black hair. (Alyssa actually met her at the lunar new year festival.)

[jolting]

Mhm, that's her. How'd you meet her?

[kievs]

She was wandering all over the lunar year festival by herself, actually. Did you know that?

(It's pretty obvious she's thoroughly unimpressed.)

[jolting]

Yeah, I know.

[kievs]

She's a little kid.

(like, the fuck, dude)

[jolting]

Yeah, no kidding. And takes after her father's side of the family. A lot, so I wasn't ever worried about her.

[kievs]

Interesting. If she wasn't eight I'd say that made sense, but because she is it's just bullshit.

[jolting]

[he rolls his eyes] Yeah, yeah. Go grab your torch and pitchforks.

[kievs]

Is it so unreasonable to want dads to not be shit.

[jolting]

[his expression turns fierce] Her father is not shit. He's a good man. You don't know Lucy or her family, so back off.

[kievs]

(Why's he talking in the third person all of a sudden, none of this makes sense.)

Right.

(Fuck. Looking at his angry face makes Alyssa feel cold all over. Without further ado she closes the connection and throws her phone away, across the room and onto her bed.)
