Elves exist still where I'm from. In Svartalfheim and Alfheim. We probably got the idea from all the writing from back when the Asgardians roamed Earth forever and a half ago.
I'm assuming most places have had elves at some point which is where the idea came from originally. I could be wrong.
Mine hasn't gotten overrun despite numerous attempts so it could be worse.
