Voice || un: TheStrandInstitute

[The voice that comes over the network is deep. Anyone who remembers speaking to him might recognize it as Richard's.]

As many of you are aware, several people have gone missing. While it's come to light that they are being kidnapped, Alex Reagan, who was recently kidnapped while investigating the situation was able to offer a description of her kidnappers.

[There's a pause as a click is heard before another two, then Alex seems to begin speaking as he's playing back part of the recording on her recorder.]

[Alex’s voice gets closer to the recorder, and she whimpers before she adds, talking so quickly that her words almost run together, pain lacing through each sound.] Two white males, taller than me, not familiar one older one young with.. [A louder grunt and the sound of someone hitting flesh before Alex just yelps loudly and goes silent. The recorder continues to run for three minutes until it automatically shuts off in the silence.]

[There's a spark of anger in Shalimar's voice, though she's containing it as best she can. This situation just got personal.]

I don't have either but if you hear anything, let me know. Sounds like a couple of punks need a heavy dose of karma.

[And she would be more than happy to deliver.]

[Exactly as he thought. People know Alex, people like Alex. For her, they're willing to do a great many things that they might not do for others.]

Would you, be able to watch Apothenia. I'd prefer to keep my whole focus on this.

[Richard's words are calm, he's calculating what needs to be done, and Alex would kill him if he left Apo alone and uncared for.]

Well I'm not much of a babysitter but I guess I could hold the fort until we know something more. No promises afterwards, though.

[Shalimar having a distraction while she doesn't know who to hit is one thing. Shalimar getting stuck away from the action when it's happening is a whole other matter and not something she cares for.]

I'm sure I can find a local to watch him once I'm better able to focus.

[He gives her the address to a stupidly extravagant mansion.]

There's a spare key in the fourth ceiling panel from the entrance. Also, if you weren't aware, Apophenia is a dog.

Where did you find that?

Elizabeth Bennett found it outside the coffee shop which Alex frequents.

An interview of the employees gave no information on Alex's possible whereabouts or her assailants.

[He pauses. Spouting facts and information makes it easy to hide your emotions, asking for help, something Richard both doesn't and is loathed to do makes it harder to hide them.]

If you have any, success, in locating missing people, I'd appreciate any assistance.

[He's not even going to mention how potentially selfish that request is if Alex isn't with the other missing people.]

[It does sound a little like a mission briefing. Unseen, Wanda bites her lip.]

If we knew which part of the city they're in, I could find them.

[Even if the missing people aren't being held together, that much fear and pain would be obvious. She just needs to get within a few blocks of them...]

The best assumption is somewhere that's unused by the public. The first disappearances were outside the city, but there's the possibility that they were simply convenience based.

Still, it's at least a lead.

Is there anywhere outside the city they could keep so many people?

Several. It depends entirely on their plan for the hostages is. Ransom is doubtful with missing people on this scale.

The number means that it has to be somewhere large, secluded and not well known. Probably a cave or naturally made shelter of some sort. I've heard there are some cave formations outside the barrier.

There's also a man named Remy who is getting equipment for a more thorough listening of Alex's tape.

[Remy's concerned, certainly, and he's not trying to hide it. Alex is a friend.]

Ain't much ta go on, homme...'cept...you run dat through any sort of analyzer? Maybe it picked up some background noise, somethin' that would let us track 'em?

Unfortunately, my equipment isn't here.

You looked around recently, homme? Dis place is full of equipment. You need me ta get somethin' for you, you get me a list. I'l take care of de rest.

[He cares about Alex, yes, but she's not the only person missing, and whoever's responsible was able to kidnap a woman who could bench press a city bus.]

[Richard will run down a list of very technical equipment to break down the audio as well as maps for as much of every inch of the inside and outside of the city.]

[And Remy will be listening very intently.

And then running it back by him.]

Dat sound 'bout right?

Yes.

[There's a pause before he adds.]

When you're ready I'll meet you at the house.

[He's still working on turning 'my father's house' to 'Alex and my house'. He'll also give her the address to a stupidly extravagant mansion.]

don' know how much 'a dis stuff I can come by on a short notice, mon ami. You any good at improvisin'?

There should be sufficient materials in the house for that.

[There's another pause. He's a bit embarrassed actually.]

I hadn't thought of searching the house for materials.

D'accord, homme. I'll be there soon as I can.

[Don't be embarrassed, bro. You're worried. It happens.]

You got an idea how many were taken, by de way?

I'm afraid I don't.

We'll work dis out, Strand.

[A beat.]

Don' happen ta know any telepaths, would ya?

I don't believe in magic or the supernatural ...

[There's a long pause as she wars with himself about the idea of admitting to this, but it's Alex at stake here.]

There was a woman I spoke with, her username was Scarletwitch. She seemed to feel that she could locate her if she were in the right vicinity.

Then I reckon we're fortunate they don't need yo' belief ta exist, n'es pas?

[There's a pause as he listens.]

Did she introduce herself? Name 'a Wanda?

We didn't exchange names.

...ain' too good at makin' contacts are ya, Strand?

[His tone is light, though, considering the situation at hand at least.]

I'll see what I come up with, homme, an' I'll be by soon.

[He thinks about answering, but it isn't as if Remy is wrong. Richard is bad at making contacts, and he's just barely keeping his head above water right now. Especially when the words 'not again' keep having to be pushed out of his mind.

Instead, his voice softens, almost into a breath of relief.]

Thank you.

[Strand didn't have to say anything, of course. Remy recognized the tone in his voice. It gave sound to his own concerns, after all.]

Don't mention it, homme. [And a pause.] Rogue's missin', too.

[There's a long moment of silence before Richard speaks again.]

I wasn't aware you were close.

[He'd seen her at the picnic but didn't know that they were close at all. Of course, he didn't talk to Rogue at all.]

[ He chuckles at that, a little bitterly. ]

Somethin' like that, homme. Rogue an' I go way back, non? An'...it ain't something easy to describe.

[It's on the tip of his tongue to ask 'But you love her', but this is Richard, and he's not going to ask something like that. He'll just ignore the question and in place, simply say,]

I'm sorry.
