Why can't it just be going around filling pillowcases with candy?

What makes you think candy here would be any less scary than ghosts?

Because it's candy, obviously. And I've been eating it for a month already.

[And blowing all her money on stupid stuff.]

And you trust complete strangers to give you candy that isn’t poisoned or otherwise weird? You must be braver than the Marines.

People are different here than at home. Besides, if someone did that, then the guard would get them.

[jason wishes he could believe that. he has basically no faith in people, and his world and experiences have given him no reason to alter that outlook.]

Lots of tricks, not many treats. Not the kind you’d want anyone dropping in your pillowcase if you wanna keep all your fingers, anyway.
