I must have missed a pretty festival. There are lanterns hanging everywhere or does it become so dark here that you can't see, even by the light of the moon? They explained fairly well what this place was and how I got here, but its still a bit overwhelming.

[She laughs, flustered. Her cheeks turning the same shade as her hair.]

I should introduce myself. I'm Anne Hale from the Salem colony. I should like to explore this place a bit more, but I would be grateful to have someone show me around. I promise not to press you with too many questions. Everything is better through experience, I've found.

Thought Salem was a city.

The American colonies ran off and became a country.

Couple hundred years ago.

[Bit off there, Sid, but not by much (in his timeline, anyway)]

It can be overwhelming, can't it? The lanterns were for the festival. They have these things called electrick lights here that keep the city lit. [The technology here has been wild for a guy used to horses and torches.]

I've only been here about a month, but I could show you around some, if you'd like.

A festival of remembrance, to honor the dead. The lanterns along the streets were lit to guide the spirits of loved ones. It's a nice tradition. [He's thinking about keeping the lantern he hung outside his window, even if he doesn't keep it lit. It's a small thing for his mother, since he can't visit her statue.]

Just Damen. [He has no need to use his full name and titles here.] What should I call you? And what sorts of things would you like to see?

The lanterns are rather pretty, aren't they? Like extra stars.

It's calming even if its a little bit sad at the same time, right?

I think there's still some available if you want to send off a belated lantern.

You just missed it. This is the second festival they've had since I got here, though. I'm sure there'll be another one you can take part in soon.

[A pause.]

And...I don't think anyone would mind if you asked questions. It's confusing when you first come out of the portal.

They don't really explain it at first, but the people giving the orientation are willing to give you more information if you ask them about it.

Apparently people are drawn into the portal when they need a new home. I'm...not sure how accurate that is, but that's what they told me.

Oh. [ This is awkward. He's looked into that particular time a fair amount for his own research. ] That must... be an interesting time, right?

I'm from Virginia, actually, just a few hundred years later.

[Straight-forward enough question, so Shai just sort of leans back languidly in her chair to answer it, oop. She's a cheery woman with a rich accent that edges into something like Earth Australian (with a helping of South African that edges mostly into her vowels) and she gives a vague little two-fingered salute to the camera in greeting.]

The lanterns were fluttering about as a part of a festival to remember and honour the dead, I believe. I doubt they're meant to linger, and they certainly aren't intended to stave off the night.

Pleasure to meet you, Anne. Name's Shai.

[She seems sweet, and it means that she gets a smile that edges into genuine. Always has had a soft spot for the nice ones.]

Ah, I think it's just a matter of opinion at that case.

[They burn candles for Janirak, too.]

Everybody has their traditions, and all. They do anything else where you're from?

[ Cisco doesn't mean to be a creep, but well he glances down at the responses and questions she's already been asked and 1692, damn. And here Cisco had thought the transition would be hard for the woman he'd met from the 1940s. ]

i'm not exactly an expert on this place but you can ask as many questions as you'd like and i'll try to get you up to speed. you're probably better getting someone else to give you the tour, though. i still get lost myself some days.

name's cisco ramon.
