[ He sees it. It says more than perhaps anything else Clark has said so far. Cain tucks that away for now because he doesn't know enough, doesn't care to pry enough. The seed of interest has been sown, however. ]

Two thousand, seven hundred and—either ninety-one or ninety-two if you count the fact that we skipped the calendar date of my birthday when I got here. I've just been rounding up to three thousand for brevity's sake.

You're born on February 29th?

No, March 23rd. Close as I can estimate, anyway. What I meant was it was December at home and it's May here.

[signifies]

Oh, I see.

Yeah, the alternate universes are strange enough without time being a factor. [ He takes a chance. ] My son is from over ten years in the future.

[ His brows go up at that. Surprise. Jealousy? ]

You have a son here? How old is he?

[signifies]

He's ten, and from another universe.

[ If a future kid wasn't confusing enough... ]

[ He lets that process, then the chair finally drops down to sit properly so that he can slump in it. This is so weird. ]

Well... congrats, it's a boy. [ There's only a faint smile for the joke. ] Seriously, though, even if it's from a stranger, I'm glad to hear you call him your son.

[signifies]

Well... weird as it is, he's still family.

There's a lot to get used to about being here.

Yeah, I understand having a weird family.

[ And lots of it. ]

Despite all the time you've had, sounds like you're still getting there.

[ Clark smiles sheepishly. ]

I'm really not used to it. Where I'm from, we've had first contact with aliens, but even that doesn't prepare you much.

[ He takes a moment to take another drink. ]

I have to wonder if it's not easier for everything to be crazy and unfamiliar instead of just trying to figure out what piecemeal you share with a place like this.

I'd say it's easier... but people always look for the familiar first.

It's how people cope. This whole thing could just be a huge data compilation project and not even go anywhere... but right now I can't think of something more useful to do in trying to figure the whole deal out.

Aside from what they want us to do, playing nice for the sake of the whole Quarantine, anyway.

[ Clark nods. ]

I've been looking into it on my own time. If there's anything you think is fishy, we can focus on it.

You'll be one of the first people I call. I just need to get a better footing here first.

[ He's hardly been here a week and look at him. Already getting nose in places it doesn't belong. His brother would probably call him an idiot, but Cain can't abide just not knowing when it's something this... this huge. ]

[ Clark nods. ]

Take your time. I don't think either of us are going anywhere.
