Besides all this mumbo-jumbo about portals and the fact I've obviously lost my mind and am lying strapped to a hospital bed somewhere, I've got a few things I'd like to clear up—

[The blonde woman frowns deeply at the screen, brows drawn tightly together in displeasure.]

—namely, it's been told to me that we can't leave this place until they've scrounged up enough 'resources' to send us back, which seems oddly convenient. Does anyone know if there's been success with that yet? Has anyone been sent back home, or is that some nebulous 'someday' thing they're telling us? Second of all...

[Her hand comes up to gently cup a small gold locket hanging around her neck; a gift from the city to her, it seemed. Her mouth works for a moment, trying to find the words.]

Trixie, baby, if you can hear me, mommy's here and going to find you. I promise. Just sit tight, monkey.

I know, the terminology is cryptic, but that's the best way to describe them. [ And, well, Re-L wasn't really the type to use inflammatory wording in something like this. In other situations it wasn't outside of her play book, but like hell would she down play how intimidating those creatures had been and have someone risk their life for it. Some parts of her still managed to be that responsible. ]

Mmn.. [ She makes a small noise as if to say slightly, pausing to think. There's a clink in the background, like she's put down a glass. ] .. In a way. Granted I've only ever seen wolves or tigers in books but, only in a way. They've all got familiar characteristics in their own ways - I've heard some compared to rabbits, as well.

But they're alien. There's no denying that much. And the predator types are very adept in their hiding. I had to have my hand mended after a run in with one while I was out there.

Right. Alien.

[She let out a small breath, almost verging on a laugh. But there's obvious discomfort there, like she can't quite believe they were actually having this conversation.]

I must've smashed my head on the way here. It's the only explanation for any of this.

You'll drive yourself to the edge trying to make sense of it in the strictest scientific terms. [ Spoken like someone who's probably tried and failed at it, honestly. Sh's tried to make sense of the Eluvio before this, too, and absolutely 0% of any of it made a damn lick of sense. Eventually, she'd learned to breathe and let live, so to speak, at least in terms of trying to explain how the hell any of this had happened at all.

Plus, she preferred her head directly on her shoulders. ]

The best thing to do is to accept this is what it is for the time being and move on with it.

If you want to see the outside I know enough perimeter guard members to take you out...

And I wouldn't mind going back out myself.

[There's silence on the other end for a moment as she considers that. She wasn't the only one who's tried to convince her that monsters were outside the gate, but no one else had offered to actually show her what was out there. To prove it to her. Now that they were, it left her with a decision to make. It should be easy -- and yet her gut told her it wasn't the wisest, especially if there were dangers out there.]

What would I need?

Some kind of weapon, preferably. I don't exactly take jobs doing protection for anyone other than myself. Though if you can find a perimeter guard to come along that may not be an issue. If you want to trust someone else to watch your back, that is. If you're pretty good with pistol though, you'll be fine. [ She'd offer her own, but there's no way she feels all that comfortable with giving someone else her back up weapon should anything happen to her standard weapon. Perhaps she's a little too paranoid - but better to be prepared than to not be, so far as she's concerned. ]

It isn't as though you're going camping, after all.

That wouldn't be a problem.

[She was no expert in martial arts or military grade weapons, but she knew how to defend herself. Hell, she'd already come to this place with a gun strapped to her person, albeit a handgun with only the bullets she currently had loaded. She may be at a disadvantage, but she wasn't completely defenseless.]

I was a cop back home. I know how to use a gun.

So have they assigned you to the police force here? [ It's an honest enough question - she wants to know if there's someone in her work place who may need a little showing around, too. In truth she probably wouldn't be a police officer much longer before moving back to investigating, but it might be worth it to extend a helping hand when she had the chance to. If not.. it's always good to have people remember you in a good light. Particularly for someone who tended to chafe people at times. ]

Provided you have a gun and can aim, as well as having someone to watch your back, then going outside isn't all that intimidating. The creatures close to the wall don't seem to bother with other animals unless they come for them first, anyway.

They have, as an officer. I used to be a detective before. [She's done the whole song and dance of being an officer before, even though it's been awhile. It feels strange, being in that position again, but she fully intends to climb her way up if she's going to be stuck here awhile.]

Someone else said it's mostly just rough terrain. Is there really no more beyond that?

Then I'll no doubt meet you, at some point, during a work day. Provided they don't follow through with the promotion first. [ Re-L had never really had the pleasure - (a term she uses very lightly - of doing regular police work before being assigned the position of inspector. A mixture of the fact there was no way she'd be reigned in as closely roaming for police work, and the fact that her grandfather had already decided on the position before she was even physically created.

A cog for a wheel, essentially. ]

It is mostly rough terrain. Farther out there is a delta, and I've heard that there are other civilizations out there amongst all the growing plant life.

I've not seen any yet, but I wouldn't doubt it, either.

Ah, good to know. Do you know how big the department is, Ms...? [She hadn't stopped to think that this person could be a potential coworker, though. It makes sense, considering this person's particular skillset. Well, at least she was already breaking the ice, and it wasn't even her first day.]

You'd think there would be, since apparently this place made it all on its own way out here.

Mayer. Re-L Mayer. [ She doesn't mean to sound so James Bond about it, really, she just realizes shortly after giving her surname that the whole 'Miss' thing is still not what she prefers. It makes more sense to tell her full name, with that in mind, and so she follows through. ] The department isn't anything too entirely massive. But this place isn't exactly at war, or anything of that sort either, so it makes relative sense.

It made it because it's been relying on resources from other places.. like us. It's a fairly genius way to make sure your city survives, however.. mmn.. you se the problem in that, I think.

[Bit of an odd name, but she'll roll with it.] Nice to meet you. I guess we'll have plenty of opportunity to run into each other, then.

Sure. It's smart, but there's also the chance of overly relying on others. Still, it's apparently lasted this long. Credit where credit is due. I'd be interested in getting more information about it. About how far this place reaches, really, especially that portal.

I'm not difficult to spot out, so I'm sure we will. [ Blue eye shadow and a lot of height will do that for a girl. That and what's probably considered a very smart mouth for a twenty year old who's just joined the force. All of this is so old hat for her, by now, that the change to Riverview's police force hadn't been all that difficult to swallow.

Other than when she'd been assigned to chaperoning a rave. That she'd almost been ready to throw her hat in over. ]

All the information is readily available in their records keeping office from what I hear. There are even records of those who've gone home and when, etcetera.

Frankly, I'm just glad this isn't a space ship floating through space. If I could never experience zero gravity in a sudden setting again I'll die happy.

Yeah, a few other people have mentioned the public records office, so I'll have to take a look at that soon. Any information I can get my hands on, I'll take it.

[She hesitates for a moment, brows lifting the more she spoke.]

You've been in zero gravity before, then? I take it you weren't some sort of astronaut.

It is readily available, provided you'd like to take it all as factual at face value considering the nature of this place. Nothing seems to be too sketchy about it, though... I suppose thanks to my upbringing I'm just suspicious in general of things being laid out so plainly.

[ There's a short sound, maybe like a little laugh, as she says that she assumes she wasn't an astronaut. ]

A safe assumption. Before this place, believe it or not, I was taken by some sort of portal to a ship in space. I'm aware this makes me sound like I belong in some kind of ward, but it's the truth. It had some problems maintaining it's gravity systems and I can safely say I learned my stomach's limits with disorienting visual input very quickly.

No, I'd say being skeptic of what information you're given is a good call. I'm a little wary myself of how transparent everything is here. It's almost a little too open and convenient, but I'd rather look at the information myself than not.

[She lets out her own little snort at the 'ward' comment.]

So this isn't the first time you've been taken to another 'world' then. No wonder you seem so calm about this entire thing.

It's not a bad thing to do, agreed. I haven't been able to be as thorough as I would like, normally, but it is what it is. With working sitting for hours in the records hall isn't exactly something I can do too often. [ Plus she's a bit of a workaholic, when she was allowed to be. Thankfully the others from the mission and the Eluvio were there to keep her head on straight mostly. ]

I wouldn't say I'm calm. I've just learned that stewing on things for hours gets me no where in the end.

[They were quite similar then in that respect. If you asked anyone who knew her, they'd most likely describe her as married to her work. The last time she was having a girl's night, she'd also stopped in the middle of it to try and get info about a homicide case, so she's not exactly one to judge.] I'll probably be going sometime soon. If you're interested, I'd be happy to pass along any noteworthy information I might find.

Mm, fair enough. That's usually easier said than done, though.

I wouldn't mind that if you find anything noteworthy. [ It couldn't hurt to collaborate. She was already doing that with Yuuri and a spare few others, though the figure skater was one of those allies she'd never quite expected to bring into the fold, so to speak. It had also been a reflexive motive, really -

He hadn't known the finessing motions of learning things while holding his cards to his chest. ]

That's the truth. But it worrying is much worse than just accepting what i can and moving on with it.

Sure. I'll be sure to keep you in mind.

[She had similar thoughts. So many people here were in a similar boat as her. New, unsure of how things worked, wanting to learn more. It didn't hurt to have allies or people she could work with.

She lets out a thoughtful hum at that last comment.]

Yeah... as long as all other options have been exhausted first. Maybe that makes me obsessive, but that's how I am.

I'll do the same if I come across anything interesting. [ It always helped to have a network of people working together to inform. She wasn't sure if there was, truly, anything to inform each other about, but it was always worth while to be suspicious about a new place and new organization. At least to her estimation. ]

It is fairly obsessive, but I can't fault you for it. I've done the same from time to time.

[Reason or not, it certainly didn't hurt to try and figure this place out. If they were going to be here for the foreseeable future, then knowing the background and anything pertinent to their stay was a good thing, as far as she's concerned.]

Sitting still isn't exactly my specialty. If it gives me something to do, then might as well.
