β°ΒΉ video (ππ: ππππ π»ππππ½)
[ the feed opens up with a little bit of jostling until it's settled on a nearby bedstand. then, there's a flash of red cloth before al settles down on the floor in front of it. in his white-gloved hands is a broken lamp. he sets it on the floor in front of him. ]
Hello! [ he's rather cheerful. ] I'm Alphonse Elric. Some of you may have already met my brother, Ed. We're alchemists and though we're working in the Perimeter Guard, I also wanted to let people know that we're here to help. If you have something broken, we can probably fix it.
[ he gestures at the broken lamp with a grin and then slaps his palms together. they're then placed above the lamp as a bright, blue light encompasses it. there's a spark of energy and soon the broken pieces are molding back together. ]
See? Just like new.
[ switching it on, the light flickers for a second and then begins to glow steadily. ]
So again, if you need something fixed, Brother and I are on floor 6. Have a nice day!

He's mentioned alchemy to me before, but this is the first time I've actually seen it. How do you... how does that actually work?
no subject
As for alchemy it operates on the principal of Equivalent Exchange. It's the process of harnessing energy through arrays to transmute or alter matter on a molecular level. Something cannot be made from nothing and I can't make more or less of something, but I can shift the material I have to repair or fix it. Understanding what the material is made of is necessary. Then it can be deconstructed and reconstructed into a new form made of the same material. Does that make sense?
no subject
[This is coming from her, which is saying something.]
For the most part, yes. It's the same concept as matter not being able to be created or destroyed, right? We have that same principle where I'm from, but no one can actually shift that material around. [A beat.] What's an array?
no subject
[ a polite smile as he continues. ]
That's exactly it. And an array is a series of circles and geometric figures combined. Something like this...
[ and he begins drawing a simple array on the floor in chalk. ]
no subject
[She gazes at his drawing intently, humming thoughtfully.]
Is that what's on your glove? And why you could fix that lamp just by clapping your hands together?
no subject
[ and he has, including sacrificing himself, the souls of others in the form of the philosopher's stone, and even his world in order to be with his brother.
at the mention of his gloves, he grins and nods. ]
You noticed! Yes, that's exactly what I did.
no subject
[A gentle smile his way; it's nice that they've found each other again, even if it isn't their home. It makes her think of Trixie and how she'd react if she showed up here.
Probably for the better she's safe at home, though.]
And you... what? Think of what you want the pieces to be or something? I know it's supposed to be a science, but it looks more like magic to me. Does that mean anyone can learn it?
no subject
[ there's a fond smile on his face as he recalls the journeys they'd been on. he doesn't mind where they might end up, as long as he's with ed. after all, they've gone through so much together and they're all each other has. ]
Basically! There's a lot more to it that Brother can better explain, regarding where the energy comes from. Some people can learn the principals, but not many have the power or the will to preform the kinds of transmutations Brother and I can do. Brother was even an alchemist for the military. Youngest ever!
no subject
[A questioning arch of her brow at that. She understands the idea of them being separated, but that doesn't seem to be what he's referring to.]
He mentioned that before. What do alchemists do for the military exactly? Fix things? Fight?
no subject
[ he laughs a little, subconsciously. ]
I almost died, so Brother had to save me by binding my soul to a suit of armor in our father's laboratory. It was lucky he did. I would've disappeared otherwise.
But that meant I couldn't eat, sleep, or feel for that time.
[ and he makes a low hum, a bit sad as his smile turns bittersweet. ]
Both. Plus Brother's knowledge of chemical and physical compounds made him good for researching materials needed for the military, like ore.
no subject
[She sounds incredulous at that for the briefest of moments, her eyes widening as she takes in the implications of that. Binding his soul. Well, that explains the username.]
That's something even an alchemist can do...? Actually capture the essence of human life and put it into something else? That's... almost terrifying, if I'm being honest. You must have been frightened. How are you-- you're not that way anymore, though.
[And to be live that way, not being able to sleep, or eat, or feel as the rest of the world does. It sounds lonely to her.]
Mm. So like a jack-of-all trades, then, depending on what they needed. [A pause.] He told me. About the little girl one of them hurt. His daughter.
no subject
[ said with a nervous laugh. she's right on the money about how lonely it felt, but looking back, he's never exchange those memories for anything. mostly because he's glad his brother kept him alive. ]
Brother was able to return me to my body. The downside is I look thirteen when I'm actually seventeen. I lost those four years, but I'm alive and that's what matters. It's also... well.
[ a pause and then the feed becomes private. as he fiddles with his device, he licks his lips and his brows furrow. as if he's trying not to let himself cry. ]
It's also why Human Transmutation is forbidden. Like what Brother was talking about. That was... [ a breath. ] Nina. And what her dad did was unspeakable. Some might think what Brother did for me was the same, but it was the only way he could save my life at the time. That's why we try to tell people to never meddle with alchemy that way.
permaprivate
Well, even aside from what that man did to his daughter, I wouldn't see how someone could compare you two to that. It's not really the same, but I'm a cop. Murder is illegal, of course, but even in the eyes of the law, circumstances can change a verdict. Someone acting in self-defense wouldn't be considered the same as someone who murdered in cold blood. [A beat.] My dad's been gone for a long time now. And if someone told me I could've brought him back, I'm not so sure I wouldn't have considered the same thing.
[A pause as she mulls this next part over before she speaks.] Ed also told me about... his arm. Or I found out on accident, anyhow.
no subject
You seem like a nice person, Miss Chloe. I'm glad Brother and I met you.
[ a nod and then he considers the realization that she knows about ed's arm. ]
Brother usually likes to keep his automail covered. He lost it saving me, but since it was something taboo, he can't really talk about it. I would do anything to see it restored.
no subject
Thanks, Alphonse. You seem like a nice person too.
[He certainly loves his brother, that's for sure. She's quiet for a moment, processing that next statement and feeling a rising dread in her chest.]
So that's the 'equivalent exchange'? Saving someone from death leads to them losing their limbs?
no subject
Equivalent Exchange is Alchemy's first law. Nothing can be gained without sacrificing something of equal value. Brother only lost his arm because he didn't resurrect me fully. He could only bind my soul to the armor.
no subject
[It sounds like cruel and unusual punishment to her. And less like a science and more like some kind of dark arts.]
But you're in an actual body now.
[And Ed's still missing his arm, she doesn't say.]
no subject
I am. Brother was able to bring me back completely, but the exchange was that I lost a lot of memories for a while. I have them back, but Brother...
[ he doesn't say it either, merely looks down. ]
We were separated for two years as part of the exchange. Brother ended up trapped in a world without alchemy.
