[The video feed is a little shaky - she's still not used to holding it - but it manages to focus after a few seconds on the outskirts of the forest. It seems Letha has been doing a bit of exploring on her own, and the reason why is clear if one looks close enough. A floating ghost creature of some sort is peeking out from behind a bush, apparently startled by her fiddling with the tablet.]

Oh no no no, come back, I won't hurt you!

[The creature hesitates, but it seems to be angered by her perseverence, and puffs up with an indignant little "phan-TUMP!" before flying up into the trees where she can't see it. Letha lets out a little huff of frustration.]

I followed that thing for an hour... [The video feed gets unfocused as she lowers the tablet to check back at how far she has to walk back home.] I was wondering if it was one of the creatures Professor Sycamore brought from his world. Not that I had any means to tame it, but...

[There's some ambiguous mumbling. She just doesn't want to admit she was following it because it was cute and she wanted to touch it. She's not sure where to go with this video, so she cuts it off here.]

[She points out one of the trees, not too far away from them.] It disappeared around there... I hope it doesn't get lost, I would hate for it to be stumbling around confused. But I suppose all of those creatures are.

I could say the same. When I first arrived here and let my Garchomp out of her Poke Ball, she completely confused at the new world until I calmed her down.

[He then approaches the tree she pointed and checks to see if the Phantump is really hiding there.]

[If anything, it looks like the phantump just forgot she was there. Now that it's safely perched on a branch - or... floating above a branch - it's just sitting there with one of the native fruit in its little hands. While Sycamore's watching it takes a bite, but doesn't seem to like it and throws it away.

The sound of the fruit falling startles Letha a bit, and she follows to spot it.]

So it was up there the whole time... little miscreant.

[She's going to be that miscreant's friend if it kills her.]

[When he looks up, he can see the Stump Pokemon eating a native fruit up in the tree. However, Sycamore stops the woman before she can do something.]

You said we need to lure it down, right?

[He then takes out a can of Pokemon food from his bag takes out some kibble to offer for her.]

Here, it's not much, but this may help.

[She nods, careful not to make much noise as she takes the food and slowly approaches the tree. She slowly reaches up to show it to the pokemon, trying not to startle it.

It notices her almost immediately, but seems reluctant to come down from the tree. After a bit of straining to reach for it she lets out a little huff.]

Get down here, I have food for you.

[The phantump hesitates, but slowly floats down to investigate. It definitely smells the more familiar food, and once it starts eating it's clear it's been picky about what it finds around the quarantine.

Letha glances back at Sycamore with a grin on her face.] He seems to like it.

[Sycamore sighs in relief once he sees Phantump is attracted not only the food but also the woman. While the usual method of capturing a Pokemon is to battle and weaken, he decided to let her befriend it without harming the Ghost/Grass Pokemon. It might be difficult, but it's the only choice as this is her first time meeting one.]

Next, try to bond with the Phantump such as petting his head.

Alright... [Her movements a little shy and flighty, but she gently touches the top edge of the Phantump's head, feeling a bit of shock at the feeding. It really feels like wood... which makes her deeply curious as to how this creature works.

The Phantump shies away from her at first, but she lets it eat a bit more before trying again and it seems to accept it the second time.]

Is the stump part of its body? [Her fingers reach under its chin to try and feel where it connects... and the Phantump bites her finger. She lets out a little yelp as she pulls her hand back, not injured but definitely shocked. The Phantump is not impressed... but at least it hasn't left yet.]

[That was definitely a bad move as he knows that his wispy body is a little sensitive. Thankfully, the Phantump hasn't fled from her just yet, so there is still a chance.]

Careful, some of its body parts are sensitive. Try to be gentle.

Oh... I didn't realize. [She runs her hand gently over the wisp on the top of its head instead, and it seems much more tolerant of that.

Now the pokemon food in her hand is all gone, and the Phantump goes from tolerating Letha's attention to investigating Sycamore, following the smell of food. Letha is a little offended at first, but she lets out a small laugh.]

It must not like the woods here, if it's willing to stick around just for food.

[Once she managed to be gentle on stroking the Pokemon's head, he sees that the Phantump tries to search around him, which it seems to be looking for more Pokemon food. Of course, he isn't worried as he looks at the woman once more.]

Well, maybe you can take it to a new home if it agrees to stay with you.

[As he said this, he pulls out not only the can once more, but also a Poke Ball, which he tries to offer them to her.]

[She takes them both, and the phantump seems to recognize both objects immediately. At the sight of the Pokeball it tells out a little "phan-phan", making a wide circle around it as it reaches for the food. Letha pulls back, shaking her head.]

If you want more food you have to be my friend. [She hesitates, and glances at Sycamore while continuing to dodge the food out of the Phantump's way.] How do I use this thing?

[Maybe showing the Poke Ball very early might not be a good idea. Not only that, it seems to be very interested in the food right now as he watches her trying to dodge the food from Phantump.]

Try to toss it on Phantump and it will do the rest.

[She's half-listening as the Phantump becomes more insistent, but the hand that's holding the pokeball reaches up to push it away and its nose hits the button on the ball. Before she's quiet had time to process it, the ball pops open and absorbed the Pokemon, and it's left rattling lightly in her hand.

Letha is left staring dumbfounded at where the Phantump used to be, before glancing at the ball in her hand.]

What happened?

[Once the Phantump was sucked into the Poke Ball, Sycamore is relieved that she managed to follow his instructions. However, he knows it's not caught yet as he sees the ball still rattling lightly on her hand.]

Don't worry, that is the main function of a Poke Ball. As long it stops shaking, it's officially yours. But if it escapes... I think we might find some other method...

[He just pray it won't escape. Since he only got Garchomp in hand, he doesn't like an unfair advantage against the little Pokemon.]

[She looks up that Professor, and then down at the ball again. It gives another shake, and then another... before settling with a quiet ping.]

...Is it done?

[The ball pops open, startling her into almost dropping it, but the Phantump immerges with a completely changed attitude. It bumps its head against hers affectionately, and helps out a cheerful little "tump-ta-tump".]

Bloody hell... [She huffs, trying to relax as she offers the food to the Pokemon and it happily indulges.] I.. suppose it's mine now, is it? Hello...

[Phantump is too busy emptying the can into its mouth to pay attention to her, but it seems comfortably floating near her now. Success.]

[Looks like she caught a Phantump. Also, he's relieved that the Poke Ball works perfectly.]

Yes. As long you have that Poke Ball, you can call out or return Phantump at any time.

[However, he is surprised to see how the Stump Pokemon tries to scarf down the food from the can.]

My goodness... I think we might need more Pokemon food to satisfy it's appetite.

Well, I can't blame it. I'm sure whatever food it likes isn't available here... this must taste better than anything it found in the wild.

You mentioned these creatures can be used for battle... is that true of ones this small as well?

[Considering that he used different ingredients to make that batch of Pokemon food, he is certainly surprised that Phantump takes a liking on it.]

Yes. But considering Phantump's strength, I think it can only fight any unevolved Pokemon. If you try to let it fight against stronger and evolved Pokemon, I doubt it can survive.

I suppose I'll have to get in the habit of training it, then.. come back in here. [She presses the button on the pokeball, mostly going on guesswork, and Phantump obediently disappears back inside of it.] How often does it need to come out of the ball? Or can I simply leave it in there? I'd hate for it to start bothering our floormates. What are they used to eating? Can I feed it human food? Will it be safe to leave it around small children?

[That's a lot of questions. However, he can manage to answer all of them.]

You should try to let it out whenever you want to bond with it or during meal time. And they usually eat some berries back in my world, though they are also attracted to human food such as sweets.

And I don't think you can leave it around small children due to it's typing, but if stays with you very long, it might be able to get along with them without any problem.

[She makes a mental note to keep an eye out for anything Phantump might like to eat. That seems like as good a way to win its affection as anything.]

Typing? What do you mean by that?

Do you remember what I said that Phantump is a Ghost and Grass Pokemon? Those two are the properties for the Phantump species as well with its attacks.

I see... [She nods quietly.] Should I be teaching it how to attack, or does it know on its own? In my world we teach dogs to fight by starving them, I hope I don't have to do anything of that sort.

[Sycamore just nods in disagreement, wondering what kind of world does she live to do those terrible methods.]

N-Not exactly... Since it was a wild Pokemon, it might learn a few attacks. But just in case, you might try to train commanding what attack should it use. I think the easiest way to know what kind of attacks it knows is to show it to us.

[The thought of specific attacks being expected of an animal is a little odd, but she nods. It takes a bit of fiddling for her to remember how the Phantump got out before, but she manages to get him back out of his ball.]

So... what attacks are normal for it?

[Phantump, having no interest in the conversation, wanders a few feet away to investigate a leaf.]

Judging by the strength of a newly captured Phantump, maybe Astonish, Tackle, and Confuse Ray.

[He is still not sure about it since he needs to see it's attacks in a real battle.]

[Well, that sounds like dog tricks to her. Is that normal for a wild Pokemon? She decides not to question it... he is a professor after all.]

Is that right... perhaps we can test it, although I suppose we'll have to find something it can attack without hurting itself.

[Phantump has found a cool bug, and is busy bothering it.]

Would it be safe to test them on your Pokemon? Assuming it's willing to take a few hits... from the look of it I'm sure it could snap my Phantump in half without blinking.

[His Garchomp is strong enough to endure Phantump's attacks, but he is unsure if she might not get annoyed by them.]

We might try to let it attack a tree, but I have my Garchomp with me. Though I'm not sure if she would agree to be a target.

Yes... I'd hate for it to get hurt five minutes after being tamed.

[She walks over to usher Phantump back near Sycamore.] Alright, let's see... Phantump, tackle that tree there.

[She points one out, and Phantump glances at it, and then at her, unsure of what she wants out of him.] Tackle. [She indicates it again, and Phantump understands better this time. He rears up and smacks head-first into the tree, while Letha cringes from the sound of wood hitting wood.]

That didn't sound healthy... [Well, Phantump seems no worse for wear, although maybe a little annoyed at how much stronger the tree is than him.]

[Once he sees the Stump Pokemon smacks the tree trunk with a Tackle, Sycamore just winced at how painful Phantump took to do so. Now that he thinks about it, maybe having a tree as a target is a bad idea.]

Maybe we should have start with a softer target...

[Despite this, he was relieved that it knows Tackle.]

[Well, Letha is nothing if not a risk-taker. Without really running the idea past Sycamore, she points at herself.] Phantump, Astonish.

[Phantump clearly doesn't see why she thinks this is a good idea, but he rushes her with the attack. Letha ends up hitting the ground hard, looking rather spooked but nonetheless impressed.]

Bloody hell... Now I think I'm a bit lucky it didn't attack me before. [She'll just be getting up and dusting herself off, trying to pretend her dignity isn't hurt. She may or may not have gotten a scrape or two on the landing.]

[Maybe mentioning Astonish might be a bad idea as well...]

At least it learns that move as well. But I think we might lay off with Confuse Ray just in case.

Yes, I... think that can wait until it has a proper opponent.

[She checks her hands, and... yeah, she's going to need bandaids later, but that can wait.]

Do I have to teach it new attacks, or will it learn them on its own? I assume, since.. it knew those in the wild.

If you like, but just in case, I think you better wait until some of the items I requested to tech firm are done with them.

[If only he has the Pokedex, they might able to finish them fast as it holds most of the Pokemon data for new trainers to check.]

But most of the time, it can learn a new attack on its own during a battle when it needed it most.

Alright... that should be simple enough. [She gives Phantump a gentle pet before returning him to his ball.]

Is there anything else I should know about it?

[Once she asks, Sycamore then pulls out 5 spray-like bottles from his bag which he brought for first-aid uses.]

Well, the obvious tip is to rest your Pokemon after every battle. But in case Phantump is injured, try to use a Potion to heal its injuries before giving it a rest.

[While he brought ten of them, he also tried to ask anyone to replicate them in case of any Pokemon being injured.]

[She takes them with an appreciative nod.] How odd... I wouldn't expect a world with such technology as these... pokeballs... to still use potions.

[She has a fundamental misunderstanding of potions, but that's true of the ones in her world too.]

That's what we called to our medicine back there. Also, there is a Pokemon Center for healing any Pokemon, but I doubt Riverview has that.

Another tip is to not overdo your Pokemon's training. Since this is your first time on owning one, I think you should train Phantump in a short amount of time.

Well, I'm sure it won't have to worry about that. In a couple of months I won't exactly have the strength to go out adventuring. [She pats her belly, which has been gaining more of a baby bump over the month.]

[When he sees her pats her belly, he realizes that she might get a baby soon. Because of this, he can understand what she is trying to say.]

I understand and I hope Phantump won't give you any trouble.
