The ballet. {He announces - as if that explains anything - before shuffling some papers to the side} I would like to gauge the interest in it. If you are intending on attending a show or if the idea of moving art excites you, we have much to discuss.

{He smiles secretly - a little charm never hurt anyone - and sets down the files.}

Dance paired with music can evoke many emotions. I know these...movies...exist, but they cannot possibly match the experience of seeing a show for yourself.

Don Quixote, Giselle, La Bayadère all relay magnificent tales that should not be missed.

Would you {the universal you} consider skating as a form of dancing?

Should I consider skating as a form of dancing? I don't know what it is.

Iceskating in particular seems to qualify. I do not mean skating for necessity.

I know ice well enough, but most men would rather avoid it.

[If "skating" could be dancing, on ice, then he has some idea now of what it might entail -- but only some.]

Do they spread gravel on the ice to dance on it?

Yet some men smooth it and make a palette out of it. {He tilts his head, eyes sparkling.} No. They strap blades to their feet.

Blades... well, you can certainly use them to climb a wall of ice, though you might need them for other things afterward. I don't know how a man would use them to dance... I'd think he'd fall.

Have you skated?

It is a remarkable feat! Such "dances" are often choreographed to music and they can be just as fulfilling to watch as the ballet.

{He chuckles and shakes his head.}

I do not have the skill. I have skated for my amusement, but naught beyond that.

[He thinks about it a little further. Skating to dance, on blades... skating for necessity, skating for amusement. You dance on your feet, so the others must be going from place to place on blades, not much different from walking on ice.]

We don't have ballet where I'm from, but we do have players who act out such stories... singers, too. It doesn't sound altogether different.

Is there a place here where people skate?

{It's a nice pastime during Winter ~~if the ice doesn't crack and you don't fall in~~. But Vincent knows what he has done cannot equal what true ice skaters can do.}

The methods might be different, but the emotions and the intent likely are not. Humanity is surely much the same no matter where you go.

I haven't seen the wide world, I've been too busy with my part of it, but aye, that's what I've seen: people are the same everywhere, for good and for bad.

Do people dance in this indoor rink, or only go from place to place?

{It's amazing how bridges can be crossed with simple familiarity. Vincent has a good grasp on humanity and he can make friendships easily using whatever method is handy. He would not be a good Watch-Dog (of Queen Victoria) if he failed in that regard.}

No matter where you go, people are the same. There is comfort in that, I think.

I'm not sure what ballet or skating are, but I do enjoy watching people dance.

Those I have seen have been wild and unbridled. Filled with passion to the beat of a drum.

Nor would I! The arts are sorely neglected, but they oft reflect the heart of a culture.

They sound downright decadent. I do tire of the limitations society places on every aspect of life. Entertainment seems like it should be free of that, somehow.

What manner of dance is the waltz?

I shall amend that lack to the best of my ability, but seeing as resources are limited, we must settle for what is available. {And what he can recall from memory. He supposes he could play an instrument for her too - violin or piano. He is accomplished with both.} I am sorry you have seen any strife.

{He does what he can to ensure his country doesn't go to war. It's a full time job, but he supposes, most of the time, it is worthwhile.}

That is fine with me! If we cannot find a partner for him, he will need to suffer through me playing the lady.
