PUTCHA HANDZUP RADIO ( audio β’ un: present.mic )
[ Featured! An audio player coming to you straight from Riverview Radio for PUTCHA HANDZUP!'s monthly podcast special. You can tune in every weekday starting now for all the latest from Present Mic, though! Here's a transcription for your convenience, folks!
The starting song is the ever classic 24K Magic by the Bruno Mars which fades in and out after these words from our sponsors. Over the last of the fading notes comes the very loud and very gravelly: ]
EVERYBODY SAY HAAAAAAAAY!
Are you ready to get started, huh, Riverview!? Present Mic here coming to you straight outta Tokyo!! Or... A version of Tokyo, anyway. I'm new here and I know I am not the only one! With that in mind, and with us having no submissions as a brand new show, we're going to spend a lot of time focusing on our theme of new connections! READY?!?!
[ Song number two starts up and finishes, with Present Mic talking over the last little bit. ]
Anyone else heard of that one that isn't from my world?! I can't help but wonder how many little ways our worlds overlap. We all know what spoons are, right? Anyone from a modern sort of era is going to have a TV, a mobile... Ah what else... Well, we definitely have a lot of things that overlap is the point! These little moments of familiarity are where we can start to connect with each other. Even as I've found a fair few people from home, [ He pauses to clear his throat and give a very enthusiastic PLUS ULTRA!!! and gives a cheeky little chuckle afterward ] It's still necessary for survival for us to make new connections right?! RIGHT?! I want to hear aaaaall your stories of unexpected connections.
I just recently met my first alien! How insane is that!? I'm sure to most of you - pft - that's old news!! How could he have never met an alien before?! Ah, our world had to take a few sacrifices in the name of science when quirks-- Ah, sorry! Superpowers were discovered among the population! So, Riverview gave me my first alien. I thought he had a quirk just like the rest of us, that Riverview was no different than home! Pretty straight faced kind of guy, but y'know that type I've always been easy to get along with. We're going to take our break now, don't go away, the conversation is just. getting. warmed up!!!
[ Songs three, four, five all play without much interruption. One commercial! Oh the pain! But don't worry, Mic is right back! ]
What were we talking about dear listener?! Ding ding, that's riiiight! It was all about the new connections that we can make here. Y'know, even if you've been here for months, there's always a chance to establish a better network. Maybe we should talk about the art of small talk? That friendr app can be pretty handy for randomly finding people, but it's nothing without carrying a conversation!
[ Some papers rustle as he continues to talk ]
What we've got here-- [ stack stack, shuffle, paper drama!!! ] are some tips on how to really connect with someone.
Number one! Ask questions. Oooh, that's a very important one. You want to make sure that you're getting to know the person. You have to be pretty exceptional to be totally boring. But if you do nothing but ask questions... Bzzt. NOOO good! That's why there is...
NUMBER TWO! Don't just make them carry the conversation. Hmm, good point, but maybe we should elaborate, right, listeners?! Let's see how to describe this... Ah! Yes, right, OKAY! So. You can't just mm and ah! and is that so!! At them. You'll never get anywhere that way. They'll spend all their energy talking and it's back to being NOOOO good! Maybe relate a story or interest of your own without talking about yourself too much. Or comment on a part you found interesting! Makes sense, right?! Super easy.
Last but not least, number three! Be curious! ... Wait. What! What kind of a list is this?! Hey, why'd you give me a faulty list, huh?! This is the same as point number one with extra fluff, and that's saying something from the guy paid to talk.
[ He sighs, clearly not actually annoyed at the staff, you can hear the smile in his voice. ]
My time is up for this week, dear listeners! Let's recap our questions for this week. Oh this is our first podcast episode right?? Even better! Make sure you write in to riverviewradio.com/putchahandzup or comment comment comment! This show is nothing without our listeners! What new connections have you made that surprised you? What new connections would you like to make? Need more small talk or relationship advice? Don't forget you can dedicate a song to strengthen those connections! I look forward to hearing from all of you.
PRESENT MIC, OUUUUT!
[ The final songs play along with one last word from our sponsors. Thanks for listening! ]

( Deadpan: ) I assume you put those techniques you detailed to good use. Though for your sake, they had best have given their consent for you to speak of them to the entire populace.
( That first song was really catchy, but the rest... not so much. )
audio!
[ Probably not. Anyway! ]
I don't know what part was gossip, madam! It's not like I spread around anyone's business or said anything bad about the guy. And as long as the stories are polite - which I wouldn't read on the air if they weren't - I don't see what the problem is, y'know??? That's the problem with mass communication at home! Too reliant on shallow gossip and bad news to get views. What's the point if you can't spread a little joy around?
no subject
( Definitely not. Welcome to ye olde medieval speech! )
To get... views. ( What the actual heck. ) Did you have their consent to speak of them so openly, then?
( Inquiring minds, and all that. )
no subject
[ Okay she clearly isn't getting this. She must be from some different time or something. Or- whatever! So he's going to try and break it down.
Ah, okay okay, so... How should I describe this. Think think, Yamada, think. ]
It's-- Views or ratings are how many people are listening to you. You get paid based on that. People like to stoop to dirty rumors and unethical practices to make people's lives difficult because that gets more attention.
[ Is that better? ]
But for this instance? No, we don't have the permission of - Let's say you wrote in about meeting a new friend. You could or could not have their permission to talk about them, I don't know. But! That's not the important part. The important part is that the story has to be positive, and that there's no information given to the public to easily identify your friend. That's one of those ethics we entertainers ascribe to. Or are supposed to. You can't make people's lives difficult on purpose. As long as the things you're saying are harmless? Everyone would view it as fine. You talk about people, right?
[ Not accusatory and not in a negative way! Maybe that's clear from his tone. ]
The important part, for this broadcast, is the connection! That's the theme you see.
[ No, he has no concept of how much he talks.
I'm so sorry.]
