[ it's late, but the stars are shining and the moon is big enough to reveal that nico is once again in the graveyard, sitting atop a gravestone as he munches some fries. his legs swing back and forth. with his mouth full, he pauses and regards the feed. ]
I've been doing a lot of thinking. Mostly about the future. So we're stuck here for five years, right? How many people are planning on staying after that? If so, why?
I mean... [ another bite of fries and he swallows this time before continuing. ] What do people miss the most about their original homes and is it enough to want to go back? If there was one thing about this place that could make you stay, what would it be?
I dunno. Anyway- Loki, I need to make sure I have Wednesday night off. And Jason, I need some advice. Also, Ed, I have a few questions about your alchemy.

Magnus and I will probably stay. I miss my parents and my friends, but not enough to go back. [It may be tactless considering what Nico's told him, but Alec tries to be honest. He holds up his hand, showing the silver ring with an M etched into it.] Acceptance is worth more than anything I could find in my old world.

[ spotting the ring, nico winces a little and looks away. he shoves more fries in his mouth to cover for the sadness that hits him. ]

[Sighing, he scrubs a hand through his hair, not realizing it now looks like one of Magnus' cats is trying to nest on his head.]
We've been married for awhile, but back home it's forbidden. Depending on how picky some people were over it... they'd punish me for it. I don't know what they'd do to Magnus if we went back.

I've got the worst luck in love. That pretty much sums it up.
[ a sigh. ]
That sucks. Why is it forbidden? Because you're both guys?
[ 1930s mentality rearing its head again for nico. he purses his lips together. ]

[Alec's not sure which would be worse. It probably depends on what happened and why it was the 'worst luck'.]
Partially, but they're changing their views on that. Slowly. It's mostly because Magnus is a warlock. If we want to marry outside our society, they torture us for at least a day then exile us.

[ bites his lip and then shrugs. ]
That... really sucks. If it makes you feel any better, if my father hadn't put me in the Lotus, I would've grown up in a time where I could get hanged or castrated for being what I am. It made coming out... really hard.

[He lets out a huff that was mostly laughing at himself.] I think there'd be a lot of people arriving or returning if some of us could grant that wish.

My kin aren't quite that barbaric but it's not pleasant when they decide to punish us for our relationships. I'm glad you were able to come out eventually. Hiding is a miserable way to live.

The Lotus Hotel and Casino. Run by lotus eaters. My father hid me there when Zeus killed my mother and tried to kill me. It's also why I'm actually eighty-seven. I spent seventy years there, not aging. When I was released, everything was different, but the way I thought about being gay was... still old fashioned.
