[ At first it looks as though someone is taking video within an art studio. There are numerous artworks displayed, but soon it becomes obvious that rather than being on easels, they are propped up on a bed, or the wooden artist chest next to the bed. Clary does not have her own studio to work in, nor does she have a big enough space to spread out. It's a constant battle to move things around the space she does have as part of the communal housing she was placed in.
The drawings are mostly cityscapes and landscapes for now. Memories of New York and places in Brooklyn. Scenes that were reminiscent of Idris – but not many people would recognise them. To anyone else they might seem like images of Europe. Hidden underneath the landscapes are hints of lifedrawing but the face of the model isn't visible. ]
So with the excuse of Valentine's Day coming up I was going to offer to do commissions if anyone is after something unique and personal. Landscapes, portraits, abstracts, cards… anything you want. This is a sample of what I’m capable of.
We can talk prices or trades - I’m open to bargaining. Even if you want to pay me in art supplies I would not turn it away.
[ She looks like she's about to reach out and kill the feed before another thought occurs to her. ]
Oh, and if anyone is looking for a housemate or knows of someone looking to move out of communal housing that would be willing to let me take over some of the space - I'd appreciate it. Sleeping under sketchbooks might seem bohemian but I need my workspace and bed to be seperate.
[ Not to mention a little privacy helps when it comes to the lifedrawing part of her art. The feed ends with her giving a bright smile. ]

[ She turns the camera to the bare wall above her table. ]
Like that one.

Okay, sure. I can work with that. Was there a particular landscape you wanted? The more information you give me the better. Like, do you want it black and white? Colour? True colour, or trippy colours. Realistic, or impressionst?
[ The redhead took a breath. ] Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions. I just like to be sure.

[ She shrugs a little after turning the phone back onto herself, thinking about it for a moment, ]
Landscape? Maybe of the city? Jungle? Natural colors but not adverse to a few creative ones if you want. I'm good with realistic or impressionist styles. Whatever works for you.
no subject
Those I can do. All of them, actually. I apprecate the fact that you're giving me a little bit of room with the style. It'll be better when I have more space for a few more pre-made pieces. Then you'd get an idea of what you were getting, you know?
[ She smiled again. ] I'm Clary, by the way.

Mostly what I observe. I didn't own a camera growing up, so drawing was the only way I could record images.
no subject
Well, I have owned a camera phone, and yet I still prefer to draw. I guess it's just more about expressing myself. Does that mean you draw quickly to capture the moment? Or just try and remember it?
no subject
There is something I've been working on for someone. Maybe you can assist me?
no subject
That's fair. Sometimes I'll sketch while I'm out, but it's not really big stuff. I might make larger works of the sketches later. Plus when it's people and they don't know you're drawing them they have a tendency to walk off halfway through what you're doing.
[ She laughed a little before tilting her head with curiousity. ]
Sure, if I can.

[he smiles a little] I think you're capable. All I really need is someone who knows about blending colors. Something more than just a sketch.
no subject
[ She gave a quiet snort of amusement. ] You're far too kind, but I guess I'm still a sucker for flattery. I can definitely help with that. Did you want something more like watercolours, or markers, or oil paint?
no subject
It's for a young girl, so maybe she won't mind the watercolor.
no subject
Okay, yes. I think that might work. I would really need to see the drawing to know for sure.

[ She wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to be cautious about meeting strangers, even after a video call. ]

My name is Doctor Whale, by the way.

Clary Fray. Nice to meet you, Doctor Whale.

But why would it have to be on that day? Why can't someone express their feelings on a different day?
[Maybe she should ask Alec about this...or Cisco, either way, it just seems weird.]
no subject
Ah, the original reason was something to do with the date of executions. It's definitely not remembered for that now. And they can express their feelings on any day. Seriously, it's just a giant excuse to sell cards and stuffed toys that say stupid things like 'I wuv you beary much'.
[ Alec would definitely not be the person to ask about Valentine's unless Magnus has managed to explain mundane holidays. ]
no subject
So a day of death somehow turned into a day of romance--yes, of course that makes sense. If this is all just an excuse to buy things, then why have a holiday around it? Or, is it just something to do because there's nothing else.
...some of the things I've seen here don't make much sense. Especially the 'wuv you beary much.'
no subject
This was over centuries. I'm hardly about to justify my culture. I know it's odd, and makes zero sense. Because the holiday is how it gets promoted. And how they sell all the themed stuff. Well, now that is debateable. Personally I always think there's something to do.
I assume it's mostly because of Earth people? Yeah, somehow sentiment means being way too sweet and using puns. Bears are an animal but also sold as cute toys.
no subject
It's very odd, but not the oddest thing I've heard, or seen. I didn't think there would be a holiday that would be dedicated to love, or the feelings of it.
Mostly Earth people, and how things are very different from where I'm from. Being sweet and sentimental didn't get you very far. It was more about survival than anything else.
no subject
Surprise! I mean, I'm sure it's not necessarily recognised here, but I figured I might as well try and use it as a segue for selling my stuff. Just like every other commercial retailer would be doing back home.
Where are you from if you don't mind me asking? I don't think it ever gets anyone very far if they have real problems. That is something I'm beginning to learn. Or was.
no subject
Well, you have to do what you need to do in order to make a living. Are you planning to sell your artwork and also have a job?
I don't mind the question. I'm from a desert planet called Jakku--and since it's a desert, it was every scavenger for themselves.
no subject
Yeah, I work at the animation studio. Just to make sure I have all my art avenues covered. But that's not really original work as such.
Desert? I can't say I've experienced much desert. I grew up in a big city. Lots of skyscrapers and people. I can't even imagine how hard that must have been.
no subject
There's an animation studio? I didn't know. I thought I had a good idea of what was around.
There are planets that are like cities, always busy, and have bright lights and such. Never been to one until I came here. And, it's probably for the best you don't try to imagine it. Overall it wasn't pleasant.
And sand gets everywhere.
no subject
Yes, there is. Or it's the best fake studio I've ever seen, and a seriously thought out prank. Surprise?
Do you like the city? I realise anything is preferable to the desert, but do you prefer something quieter?
Ew... that's... I'm so sorry.
no subject
Very surprised, but there aren't any...animation studios from my world. It wasn't something I needed to look out for.
I prefer the city for the most part, different things to try and explore, but at the end of the day, I prefer to be in a bed big enough for me to sleep in. That's it.
Why apologize? It's not your fault. At least there aren't sand storms to deal with either.
