[Today's post is school-related, for the most part. But instead of being terrible news like it usually is, Laura's been coaxed by Linda the Caseworker to reveal the fruits of their labor (or really, Linda picking up a lot of assignments and making sure Laura does them when she's not at school...). Laura carefully pins a piece of paper to the fridge of Communal Floor 10 with a magnet, which the camera will point to in just a moment—

SURPRISE BITCH]

[After a moment:]

Linda said I should tell people. So I have told people. 

I did — well on my grades this quarter. 

[She didn't particularly see the big deal; it's not that hard to do the work assignments when your caseworker keeps bringing all the stuff to you... and the tests are much easier when you've got a good eye and memory. Another beat, and this she seems more uncertain and perhaps even sheepish about, in her own way:]

I also wanted to tell any of the other kids here... if you want somewhere to hang out, I have a — new place, just for kids only. Let me know if you would like to come in, and I'll give you directions, or take you there. We have 'video-games' there, and I like them a lot. Especially Pac-Man. And comic books, and candy, and soda... Things like that. It could be... fun. 

[OOC: There might be a log later this month for the kid hang-out! If you want to hit that later just let her know you're interested in hanging out there, and you'll be good to go. What kind of treats do you get if you do lower this number of absences and all?

I'm not sure...

I think it is a special exception, because keeping me in school is hard.







But I might try harder, for Doritos.

why is it hard for you to go to school?

doritos, huh? that'd be quite a treat. you might have to try a lot harder.

[shoplifter]

I just don't like it very much.

I don't like working and doing what they tell me to do.

And a lot of the kids think I am weird. I guess I am.

[tanker]

I'm sure you've heard this plenty of times, but going to school is super important, Laura. If I could, I'd go back to school now, myself. Learn more about all the things I didn't back when I was younger.

I'm sure you can find some stuff you like to study, or do, in all the things you're learning at school. No?

[shoplifter]

I guess so. I do like art and reading. I am good at math and science, but I don't like it much. It reminds me of terrible things.

I think P.E. is my favorite, though.

[tanker]

is it your favorite because you're good at it?

sometimes, we have to do some things we don't want to, or are not good at. but maybe you can get a pass on the science and math stuff, if you talk to your teacher?

[shoplifter]

No, it is okay... if I run from things, I will miss the good parts of them.

I do like P.E. because I am good at it. But also, I feel very useful. We won the baton race yesterday.

[tanker]

That’s very true. Good things tend to come with their share of bad, or unpleasant things. It’s unavoidable.

Maybe you can try and do group projects in maths or science so that you can be useful with it, too.

[shoplifter]

I'll try. I'm not very good at group things, but I am

working on it.

[tanker]

You’re used to doing things on your own. That’s important, too, but you should show the world and the rest of your class how awesome you are, Laura

[shoplifter]

What if I am not that to them?

'Awesome'.

I am strange to a lot of the kids.

[tanker]

[ John forgets that kids can be cruel. ]

All you can do is be yourself. You may be strange to some of them now, but that's because they don't know you. And I'm sure there are some kids at school that are like you - with powers. Maybe they think they can't make friends, either.

[shoplifter]

... You are right.

It's important for us to find each other. And that it is okay to have abilities others do not have.

[tanker]

it is. we're all different, and our differences make things more interesting, and make us more valuable in a team, too. We all bring something to the table.

[shoplifter]

Sí. I am good at cutting vegetables and you are good at breaking making mashed potatoes.

[look she told a joke]

I think I would lose my temper at rude customers too often.

[tanker]

i'll take care of the customers, you make sure we have perfectly slices vegetables ;)

I have rogered that, I will not let you down.
