Hello, everyone.

I don't really know if anyone is celebrating Halloween next month, but if you are then please let me know. I'd especially be interested in helping out if anyone wants to work on a haunted house. I think it's great there's a holiday that celebrates things that are common in my world, and I want to be a part of it.

[filtered from James T. Kirk]

On a somewhat related note, I could use some help making something for my boyfriend. I'd like someone who can play an instrument, but if you're good at building things then that can work, too. Thanks.

[Steve is restless and it shows. He's looking at the camera almost like he's waiting for it to jump out at him or he's challenging it in some way. While he's making an attempt to look friendly, he's also giving the network a far too serious amount of effort, like he's trying too hard at presenting what he has to say. Steve has a message and apparently it is An Important Issue.]

I'm starting a book club. If any of you have some things you'd like to share, I figure it can't hurt to get together and look at them as a group. If you're interested, let me know. I need the experience. Maybe some of you do too.

[ooc: While Steve says "book club" what he's really doing is creating meeting sessions for people to try new things using a book someone likes as a launching point. It's an interactive book club for trying new hobbies. Because Steve has to get his hands dirty at all times. If you're interested, I will make some book club related logs for sharing activities and messes as well.]

[The video turns on with a very pensive looking Lucy.]

Okay so....I know it's a bit early to think about this--but, better to get a head start on this than to have it sneak up on you.

Does this place do anything for Halloween? Or for the month of October? I know it could be different in other worlds, but where I'm from there's trick-or-treating, people dressed up in costumes, and loads of candy.

There's also spooky and scary stuff, but I'm not really thinking about that.

[No, she's just thinking about the candy, and the costumes and the other fun things that can happen--but mainly it's the candy.

Oh, and movie marathons about wizards and witches.]

If anyone could let me know, that'll be great! Thanks!

[A video is posted on the network, Youtube-style with a young woman simply sitting at a table and talking to the camera. Judging from her surroundings, she's sitting in the dining area of one of the communal housing suites.]

Hey, y'all! I know there's a lot of you I haven't met yet, but my name's Misty. And this...

[She lifts up her hands from under the table to reveal a baby alligator, who at the moment is contentedly sleeping nestled in Misty's arms.]

This is Rhiannon. I've gotten a few questions about her, so I thought I'd clear some things up:

First of all, no, I did not steal her from the zoo. I'm a witch and she's my familiar, given to me by the River Guardians for getting through their maze of hell or whatever it's called. I helped her hatch and everything.

Two, she ain't gonna bite you, unless you do something stupid, like try to poke her. Like I don't know where some of y'all were raised but you think it'd be common sense not to go around messin' with alligators. [She shakes her head in disbelief. Some people.] Plus, you know, she's magic, so she's real smart and knows what's goin' on and will listen to me.

Three, I don't know how much bigger she's gonna get. I mean, normal gators can get to be like ten feet or so, but she's not exactly normal so who knows? Maybe I'll have to get some place for her out in the jungle or somethin' where she can be more at home, but we'll see.

[Truth be told, she'd rather not have to leave the communal housing, but she already loves this scaly girl more than anything, so whatever's best for her, she'll do.]

Point bein', you don't have to be scared of her or worry that I'm gonna abandon her in the sewer or some shit. I been around gators all my life and I wouldn't do anything to hurt her. If you got any more questions or just wanna meet her, I guess just leave a message on this video!

[The feed is mostly full of textbooks, the spines all turned enough that they're legible; it's math, chemistry, social studies, all the fun things nobody misses from high school. And on the right side of the screen is Peter, sitting with his cheek on his palm and his elbow pressed beside a blank page of paper. He looks kind of sleepy, like he'd just nod off if he didn't have the feed to focus on.]

So I've got this essay I need to write by tomorrow, and I'm having a hard time getting — personal, and all that. The prompt's asking about what inspires you, specifically. [He looks to read it word-for-word:] 'What motivates you in your day to day life?' And I mean, I've got a lot of motivations, but trying to put it to paper is giving me a wicked case of the fogbrain.

[He tucks his pen under his nose, holding it with his upper lip for a moment before letting it fall pitifully to the table. He sighs.]

What motivates you guys? Into doing what you do? What makes you put your shoes on in the morning, huh?

And don't just say 'to avoid stepping on pointy stuff barefoot'. That's a cheap and obvious answer—

[Peter startles violently as birthday music blares behind him, so much so that his pencil goes flying through the air and RIP's somewhere off-screen. Pam the pancake making robot seems to be flying onto the scene in the background with freshly made pancakes and festive lights blinking all over her.

A little lighter arm pops out, preparing to light a lone candle on the stack of flapjacks.

Peter mutters, mortified:]

...I thought I disabled Birthday Mode for repairs...

[He looks back at the robot with his hand pressed to his temple, and clears his throat.]

... Pam, uh. My - my birthday was two days ago. Two days. It's August 10th. And, uh, it's... it's the 12th now.

[Peter watches as the AI seems to try to process this, tapping his finger on the table and thinning his lips at the awkward silence. Pam's little plate-holding robo-arms lower slightly, the generic birthday MIDI file slowing to a depressive stop as the party-themed lights and lighter are shut off together. A pause of nothing. Then she turns and dejectedly wheels away into the community kitchen with her plate of pancakes.]

Wait, Pam — Aw, c’mon, I can still eat them! Hey—

[Peter drops his arms.

... Note to self, fix her internal clock...]

[The video starts with a tall, bearded man wearing a tailored suit sitting on the edge of a very executive looking desk in an equally executive looking office.

He smiles before speaking in a low, steady voice, his arms by his sides. Purposely left uncrossed. No fidgeting. He's comfortable in front of a camera, but not without practice.]

To be forcibly removed from our homes, support networks, and everything we’ve ever known is no small matter. For some, the experience can be traumatic. You may struggle with day to day life, or find yourself feeling unsafe in your new home. Holding down a job or making connections with other people can feel difficult, or even impossible, when you're uncertain of your environment and place within it. Everyone copes differently.

Very few of us asked to be here, and it's necessary the city is prepared to deal with the very real problems experienced by its displaced citizens, and accommodate their needs as efficiently and empathetically as possible in order to create and maintain a happy, healthy society. My name is Cameron Waltz, I'm a negotiator and cultural mediator from Earth, and I've been appointed the role of public representative to present our needs to the city council, and ensure our voices are being heard.

I'm looking for feedback on how your life has changed for the better or the worse since your arrival. I'll start with a few questions, none of which you have to answer, but would be very helpful in solidifying the case I'm building.

Please answer as honestly as you're comfortable. Anonymous commentary is allowed on this post, and you're welcome to be as vague or as specific as you'd like, without fear of discrimination.

I greatly appreciate any and all responses. With your help, we can find the holes in the existing social services system and work together to close them.

Thank you for your time.

-Have you felt adequately supported by the city, and its representatives?

-Do you struggle mentally or emotionally with your expatriation on a day to day basis?

-Are there aspects of life in Riverview you find more difficult than others?

-If you’re a minor, or know a minor, have you found the social services offered adequate?

-Are you satisfied or dissatisfied in the career provided for you? Do you find yourself changing jobs often?

-Do you struggle to make ends meet?

-If there's any one thing the city could do to improve your life, what would it be?

[Nine years. Nine years since she stepped back through the portal, nine years since she returned to the Enterprise, nine years that inevitably faded some of the memories of this place - but not everything. The faces she knows. Even if she forgets now where that cute little corner market was or what the hell half these gifs and memes mean anymore (if she ever understood in the first place) Beverly never forgets a coworker, a patient, a friend. And she left them all in such a hurry. The portal's connection to her time and place had been tenuous, she had to go then, or risk losing her chance to go home all together.

And now... now she's back, exhausted by the weight of war and the toll of death, new lines etched into her face. When the portal specialist told her it had only been a week since she'd left, she had to laugh. Of course. It seems this place isn't ready to let go of her.

Though not typically a frequenter of the network, it is the easiest and quickest way for her to contact multiple people at once. She doesn't want anyone (else - apologies to Lucretia) to be caught unawares by her sudden reappearance, so she leaves a quick video message:]

Good Morning. This is Dr. Beverly Crusher [of the USS Enterprise no more] reporting that I have returned to Riverview.

[For god's sake, woman, this isn't a mission log. She offers a smile - it's a little sad, but a smile nonetheless.]

I wanted to apologize to those I left without proper goodbyes. I hope you got my messages, at least. I'll be at my apartment for the rest of the day if anyone wants to stop by. Thank you.

[Laura has not really been on the network much, since the kidnappings had happened. She had been scarce in general; just because she was held captive all her life, after all, did not make it any easier to be thrust back into that terrible sort of world. But now she's back and has at least had some time to try and heal from those nasty little metaphoricalwounds, chewing on her pencil thoughtfully before lowering it and smiling a little from where she sits at a table in the community housing..]

I am twelve now... I have never had a birthday before, so I am not sure what to do other than to say so; since I have been here for a year now, I have decided that August is my birth month.

[She grins a bit, rather impish.]

And since I do not have the exact day, I guess every day in August will have to be my birthday. Gracias.

Oh, the feed ended on that note.

[ The video starts with one of Jim's usual smiles. For those who recognize the location, he's sitting at his desk at the Perimeter Guard. ]

So, after some rocky couple of months, it looks like we're settling in for a quieter month. I don't know about you, but I'm definitely not complaining. Everyone should take the opportunity to relax a little and have some fun, but please be careful. Keep in mind that things can stop being peaceful and safe pretty fast.

Building on that thought, I'd like to reinforce we are always accepting new members at the Perimeter Guard. Can't have too many of us. Also, if you can pilot ships, shuttles or airplanes, I'm always looking for more members for the aerial unit, more specifically.

If anyone's curiosity is piqued, feel free to drop by and ask for Captain James T. Kirk. I'll be happy to show you around.

[ And he leans in as though he's turning off the camera...

(( BLOCKED FROM @FRANKENSTEIN ))

... but instead he just fiddles with a couple of settings before going on to add. ]

I was also wondering if anyone here could teach me how to waltz? Or any other similar dance, really. Something nice and romantic. [ A nod. ] Thanks.

[ And now he's done. ]

[The feed opens to Laura looking a little uncomfortable in her own skin — you'd think she was in trouble again or something, forced to give another on-screen admission. But nope! Trouble was totally a few days ago. She's been an angel as of late (or as close to one as a stabby mutant can be). Instead, Linda motions for her to go ahead and start her video broadcast. What for, you ask? She steels herself.]

Prijata is coming up; it is a celebration to give people things. I am not very good at it.

But we had wood-carving for the end of the year art project, so I — made some... wooden dolls for people. [She pauses, looking up again at Linda. She motions for her to continue on.] I am not very good at it yet, so the painting is not perfect. Even so, I have... made... many good friends. Friends I didn't think I would make. So... Quiero agradecer a mis amigos. I want to thank my friends.

[This is clearly something she's not used to saying. At all. And her cheeks are slightly flustered by the time she stops and she's plucking at her tattered shirt sleeve — a new visual compared to the usually cool and collected child who never seems to care enough to be embarrassed. It's just, you know. It's different when it's something you've made for someone else. And it is their faces, a face she had studied in that way of hers over the last few weeks as she worked on the project. Her bed is covered in crafting materials, a sign she'd rushed to get them done in time.

She shows them in detail, don't worry about being left in suspense. Indeed, they're all carved carefully from wooden bits, with little items and clothing pieces glued together.

The kid sits in this earnest hope that she did well enough to not be teased. It's a normal thing to do, right? Something a person does, not a science project.

She hopes it's obvious who is who:]

I can bring them to you, wherever you are... if you want yours. If you do not, I can keep them on my dresser.

[Honestly, knowing how many she made is an eye-opener for her; she didn't realize she cared about so many people here.]

.... Feliz Prijata.

[ There's a moment of dead air first. Very brief, just long enough for a breath (a hesitation, possibly, it's all relative). Then: ]

Riverview Quarantine, this is Dr. Elizabeth Weir speaking. Now, you might be thinking that you don't know me. [ Her tone warms. ] Don't worry; the feeling's mutual. Since I've been very generously offered the position of public representative to the government of Riverview, making some introductions felt pretty prudent.

[ There's the slightest bit of emphasis on generously: not quite sarcastic, not entirely sincere. She pauses briefly. ]

I'll be honest and say I really don't plan on being in this city long-term. If they make the right calibrations to send me home, I'm gonna take that opportunity. But for however long I am here? My job is to make sure we're all heard and that our needs are met. I'll be representing all of you. And I don't intend to take that responsibility lightly.

[It's weird doing this in his pajamas but here it is. And he'd rather be broadcasting from his office, but he's in his bedroom]

My fever broke early this morning, and now I'm wondering if I ever had a fever at all. When I first contracted this virus I was exhibiting symptoms of disorientation and the sensation of intense heat on my skin, along with profuse sweating. But last night I had a very vivid dream and when I woke up, I didn't feel hot anymore.

The symptoms of conflicting sensory perception still persist. And this morning when I tried to eat breakfast, I couldn't taste anything. I'm not sure if this is a new symptom or part of the sensory perception now affecting my taste buds. I'm going to do some experimenting by wearing my glasses. I've also taken a blood sample that I'm hoping to do some work on.

Let's see... [He pauses to scratch his neck] What else? Oh, for those experiencing conflicting sensory perception, I've discovered that distraction works for me. So I read books out loud or draw things, listen to some music... Heavy metal works really well. [He scratches again, now at his elbow] I've walked around my room a few times without getting disoriented. And... um... [He scratches between his shoulder blades]

Uh, sorry. I'm really itchy all of a sudden. Feels a little like that time I got poison ivy. So that's new.

[ The camera catches a glimpse of Jim's face in his Perimeter Guard uniform, but only for the flicker of a second before there's a bump of some sort and the device is knocked down. John! Bad boy, bad.

[ There's a snout next, sniffing at the screen, then a tongue... then finally Jim reaches his phone and picks it up from the ground. He's grinning a little and shaking his head as he props it up on the table again and pulls away, dragging his new friend along with him so he's kept away from his device. ]

Sorry. That was... anyway. Captain James Kirk here, and this is John, the latest member of the aerial unit. [ He just wandered in one day and now Jim's keeping him, shut up. ] So— due to the latest rains and the most recent flooding near the river, a lot of people have found themselves temporarily displaced. I'm one of those people, but luckily me and my buddy here have a place to crash at the Perimeter Guard. We have plenty of beds and mattresses available here, for what it's worth, so anyone who finds themselves momentarily homeless, you'll be more than welcome here.

There should be other places we could use to offer people some shelter. The community centers come to mind, for instance. Gathering a few supplies would help though, so anyone willing to help and donate a few things, that would be great.

Additionally, I'll be making rounds on the shuttle, so anyone who needs a hand or absolutely must get somewhere out of bounds due to the flood, let me know.

And that's it! [ He smiles a little, nodding. ] Remember to keep safe. And if you don't need to be anywhere near it, stay away from the river. At least until the rain lets up and we manage to figure out where all this water's coming from.

(( ooc: this post is open to action for the following options: around the perimeter guard barracks, getting some rest, working, or helping other misplaced people out; near the river, aiding anyone in trouble and/or possibly fighting any of the monsters; a little all over the place on his shuttle, ready to jump in and get anyone out of a tough spot. ))

[Today's post is school-related, for the most part. But instead of being terrible news like it usually is, Laura's been coaxed by Linda the Caseworker to reveal the fruits of their labor (or really, Linda picking up a lot of assignments and making sure Laura does them when she's not at school...). Linda said I should tell people. So I have told people.

I did — well on my grades this quarter.

[She didn't particularly see the big deal; it's not that hard to do the work assignments when your caseworker keeps bringing all the stuff to you... and the tests are much easier when you've got a good eye and memory. I also wanted to tell any of the other kids here... if you want somewhere to hang out, I have a — new place, just for kids only. Let me know if you would like to come in, and I'll give you directions, or take you there. We have 'video-games' there, and I like them a lot. Especially Pac-Man. And comic books, and candy, and soda... Things like that. It could be... fun.

[OOC: There might be a log later this month for the kid hang-out! If you want to hit that later just let her know you're interested in hanging out there, and you'll be good to go. If you have anything you have in mind that doesn't fit the bill here, just hit me up at simpledog at plurk! Also, feel free to run into her on floor 10 of the community building. ♥]
