[Today's post is school-related, for the most part. But instead of being terrible news like it usually is, Laura's been coaxed by Linda the Caseworker to reveal the fruits of their labor (or really, Linda picking up a lot of assignments and making sure Laura does them when she's not at school...). Laura carefully pins a piece of paper to the fridge of Communal Floor 10 with a magnet, which the camera will point to in just a moment—
SURPRISE BITCH]

[After a moment:]
Linda said I should tell people. So I have told people.
I did — well on my grades this quarter.
[She didn't particularly see the big deal; it's not that hard to do the work assignments when your caseworker keeps bringing all the stuff to you... and the tests are much easier when you've got a good eye and memory. Another beat, and this she seems more uncertain and perhaps even sheepish about, in her own way:]
I also wanted to tell any of the other kids here... if you want somewhere to hang out, I have a — new place, just for kids only. Let me know if you would like to come in, and I'll give you directions, or take you there. We have 'video-games' there, and I like them a lot. Especially Pac-Man. And comic books, and candy, and soda... Things like that. It could be... fun.
[OOC: There might be a log later this month for the kid hang-out! If you want to hit that later just let her know you're interested in hanging out there, and you'll be good to go. If you have anything you have in mind that doesn't fit the bill here, just hit me up at simpledog at plurk! Also, feel free to run into her on floor 10 of the community building. ♥]

[ He shrugs. ] It was only ever used to show my mom my progress in school, but she wasn't always around to see them, so.

She must have been happy, though. She must have been very proud.
So the grades are very important for some people.

[ After he joined Starfleet, of course. No surprise there. ]
They can be important for other stuff too. If you want to go to a good school, or go to college. You can get better choices if you have better grades.
But having good grades doesn't always mean you've learned a lot. Some people are very good remembering what they need for their tests and stuff, and then just forget everything. What's important is that you really learn what they teach you.

My dad was always mad at me.
[She feels a little stupid saying that, but it just — slips out.
She turns her gaze away.]
What things should I learn most?
no subject
I'm sure that's just because he cares that you're alright.
[ Or maybe he was just naturally angry and grumpy. How would he know. ]
A little bit of everything. Knowledge is a very important thing to have, not just because of your grades. I liked math and science when I was your age, but I was also very good at literature and history. I was alright with art classes and physical education, but it took me a while to get really good at those.

... But she won't ruin the mood of the conversation.]
I like art and P.E. a lot... I'm good at math, but it is boring to me, so I draw on the page.

Yeah, I did the same with math and literature. I got so bored. And sometimes I ditched the classes just so I wouldn't have to put up with the teachers rambling on and on about it.
[ Jim Kirk setting a good example, as always. ]

I like to get out through the window.
[She is totally not smirking a tiny bit, no sir.]
no subject
[ Jim raises both eyebrows, looking more impressed than bothered. Priorities. ]
Wow. Does the teacher even notice? Because if not— that's some serious skills you have.

And it is good exercise.
no subject
[ Go past the wall? Good exercise. Climb the roller coaster? Good exercise. Jump off windows and builings? Good exercise. ]

That's not my problem, after I leave.

Yeah, you sound just like I did when I was your age. [ But he's grinning so that can't be such a bad thing. ]
