The festival was cute. Nice little distraction for all of us who got dropped here out of nowhere.

We’re stuck here and have to get used to it. Sure. But who knows the best place to check out fresh foods and spices? I need samples. May as well be eating whatever they give me blindfolded until I know what’s in it. They could be feeding us alien donkey balls for all we know.

Just because we’re stuck in another world doesn’t mean we have to eat like heathens.

Not yet. But if those monsters make their way through the fence and overrun the city, we all might have to worry about eating each other.

[Which, admittedly, was unlikely to happen, but Ivar liked to be prepared for the worst case scenario.]

So I take it you're a cook then?

[There's a bit of a snort because of the talk about "monsters" considering many people call his own people that. It's hard to take the word seriously. But there is something out there beyond the fence and he hasn't gone out there yet, or decided if he even should.]

I'm a cook who knows that even if the "monsters" attack, people still need to eat. They'll need someone to boil the meat and add some spices to hide that strong fleshy flavor. But...until then I'll settle with making sure I'm not feeding people shit that could kill them.

So that's how you cook human flesh. I've always wondered.

[That's sarcasm...mostly. Ivar's strange and has thought of some pretty odd things before. At least the Vikings don't eat the human sacrifices they make. Just drink their blood, but hey, no one ever accused them of being a civilized society.]

How good are you?

[That same challenging tone as before, but mixed in this time with some genuine curiosity. Ivar enjoys people who know what they're talking about. Competency has its own rewards.]

Never had to do it myself, but meat is meat. It doesn't take much to make it taste like something else, if you know what you're doing. [Which he does. He may not eat much himself--jackalopes moderate their meat intake--but he's learned well how to cook it. You can't travel through the Southern States and not take a few cues.]

I'd say I'm good, but then that's up to the people eating what I'm cooking. Never tell a customer how to enjoy your food.

I'll have to see that for myself.

[He's been very appreciative of the food he's discovered in Riverview thus far. It was a welcome change from the much blander diet he was used to at home.]

Do you have a job here yet?

Yeah that orientation group helped set me up with a job as a sous chef. Not bad so far. [He'll be planning to work his way up because he does prefer running the kitchen to slaving for someone else's vision in it.]

You looking for a taste?

I ended up on the Perimeter Guard. [Best place for the teen really. It gives him monsters to swing his ax into. He smiles at the mention of food.]

I'm always game for new food.
