[ There's a moment of dead air first. Very brief, just long enough for a breath (a hesitation, possibly, it's all relative). Then: ]

Riverview Quarantine, this is Dr. Elizabeth Weir speaking. Now, you might be thinking that you don't know me. [ Her tone warms. ] Don't worry; the feeling's mutual. Since I've been very generously offered the position of public representative to the government of Riverview, making some introductions felt pretty prudent.

[ There's the slightest bit of emphasis on generously: not quite sarcastic, not entirely sincere. She pauses briefly. ]

I'll be honest and say I really don't plan on being in this city long-term. If they make the right calibrations to send me home, I'm gonna take that opportunity. But for however long I am here? My job is to make sure we're all heard and that our needs are met. I'll be representing all of you. And I don't intend to take that responsibility lightly.

So, you can-- consider my door open. [ Elizabeth seems pretty optimistic about that, at least? ] Unless the paperwork was misleading, that should be half the point of the job.

Do the names John Sheppard and Rodney McKay ring a bell?

It's worth hearing. [ She won't say she likes hearing it.

There's a quiet rustle. She feels like her arms need to be crossed for this. ] And they ring two very loud bells, actually. Should I ask why?

It sounds like politics really does follow you wherever you go.

[And honestly, the Tetherer is glad to leave that to people like her, who seem to thrive in such areas. They're just eager to see what it's like to be less than a god, and eager to stay in the Quarantine and live a new life away from what they had before.]

[ Somehow she is exactly what he expected, and yet very much not. Jim's smiling on his end, though he keeps his tone neutral. ]

John's a friend of mine, and he's part of the aerial unit of the Perimeter Guard, which I run. Rodney and I work together, mostly. We're not as close, but we get along.

I've heard about you. From John, mostly. All good things, I promise.

Elizabeth! We'll have half of Atlantis here before we know it, this keeps up.

[ jyn doesn't normally go on the network but she's bed bound and bored out of her god damned mind so HERE WE ARE ]

Representing us for what?

[ She'd had a thought or two about checking out the Perimeter Guard roster. If she didn't have access, she had some aims of... talking her way into seeing it anyway. A notion she ultimately discarded. Turns out snooping around would've saved her a little bit of trouble. ]

If he finds out you told me that, you're gonna lose your storytime privileges. [ Elizabeth can't take this as definitive truth on hearing it. It's not her first rodeo. But she can juggle it as a possibility until she knows which way things really lean. ]

So you get along with Rodney.

[ It's. More question than statement. Sorry Rodney love you dearly. ]

[ Jim can't help but laugh softly at that. ] No, I won't. Trust me, I have my ways.

[ As if John would ever deny him anything, especially when he asks really nicely. Bright blue eyes and everything. ]

I know what you're thinking. He does come across as a little abrasive with most people. But not with me. He's a little awkward, but cute. Yeah, we get along.

[ Oh! Her friendr acquaintance. What a good. ]

For a while, I wasn't sure they'd find a way to follow me quite this far. Who knows where that would've left me?

I understand that. I've found myself in the position of a barista, and to be completely honest, I had not heard the term "barista" until that moment.

[They fear they might not have the skills for any job other than the one they want to leave behind.]

If someone goes shopping around for us, yes.

[ She doesn't even think about it for half a second. Atlantis is turning into possibly the worst-kept poorly hidden secret in the Pegasus Galaxy regardless, but switching to a more secure channel is second nature, meaning to aim a pointed tone at Carson is second nature-- ]

[ Huh. ]

Has the government told you anything else beyond representing . . . us?

[ The "us" sounds a bit weird. ]

[ When second nature runs up against the wall of reality, it registers very plainly on her face.

Orientation mentioned possibilities, but she didn't think of them as-- real possibilities. For other people, maybe, other worlds. Not them and theirs.

She's still not sure she believes in it. All of the complex emotions from the TDM thread: present once again and just as valid as before. Only they don't get the benefit of immediate hugs now. Elizabeth flounders a little bit, not sure where she plans to land until she lands there. ]

Where are you?

Pretty lofty. Maybe a little contradictory.

Offering to represent people on an alien planet, and being sure to include the fact that you're looking to hop ship as soon as possible.

Might want to leave that part out of your speech next time if you want to rally support.

[Says a man in a skull mask.]

So what exactly are you doing?

[ He's. Amused. ]

A pleasure to meet our representative so quickly.

[Voice makes it easy enough to hide her wariness and modulate her tone to something polite without having to worry about expression, which Breq takes immediate advantage of.]

I'm sure you've expected questions about this, but I'll still ask about your qualifications for the position.

I could offer to show you my resume, but I get the feeling it's a long trip back to the galaxy my usual office is in.

[ You did it Elizabeth. This is clearly the perfect time to joke. She clears her throat. ]

Politics are something of a specialty of mine. Brokering international treaties, mostly. I've been the head of a large-scale expedition for going on three years now. I'm afraid the details require a certain level of security clearance. But I can assure you that I'm very used to looking out for the needs of people I'm responsible for.

Advocating for the needs of our civilian population, technically. Particularly anyone still within their first year of arriving. If I'm being completely honest? I expect it to be a lot more arguing about budget allocation than anything else.

[ His skull mask is valid and no one can take that from him. ]

It seemed a little more contradictory to say I plan on settling down here when I know I'm looking to hop ship someday. Given the option, I'd rather err on the side of transparency.

I'm supposed to advocate for the needs of the civilian population here. Anyone in their first year especially. Exactly what that entails depends on what's going on. It could just be lobbying for a budget change, it could be... bringing them ideas some of us have had about improving citywide security.

[ She smiles. ]

It all comes down to very long, formal arguments with someone who might not necessarily understand where you're coming from.

[ Bless. ]

Sounds like a steep learning curve in the making. How's it working out so far?

Right. [ It's not unheard of for Rodney to get along with people. People sometimes have trouble getting along with Rodney, though, it's true.

Takes a little bit of digging to get to diamonds, after all. But like with a fair few people in Atlantis, once a person gets there, it's easy to understand. ] Dare I ask who's managed to charm two of my senior personnel that thoroughly?

I'm here to advocate for the needs of the Quarantine's civilian population. With a little extra focus on anyone in their first year here.

If it's anything like home, I'm sure it's gonna boil down to a lot of arguing over budgets and how to overhaul things that aren't working for us.

I'm not entirely sure I fit into that, but it's an interesting position to hold, considering the diversity this place has.

[ the amusement is obvious ]
