[ There's a moment of dead air first. Very brief, just long enough for a breath (a hesitation, possibly, it's all relative). Then: ]
Riverview Quarantine, this is Dr. Elizabeth Weir speaking. Now, you might be thinking that you don't know me. [ Her tone warms. ] Don't worry; the feeling's mutual. Since I've been very generously offered the position of public representative to the government of Riverview, making some introductions felt pretty prudent.
[ There's the slightest bit of emphasis on generously: not quite sarcastic, not entirely sincere. She pauses briefly. ]
I'll be honest and say I really don't plan on being in this city long-term. If they make the right calibrations to send me home, I'm gonna take that opportunity. But for however long I am here? My job is to make sure we're all heard and that our needs are met. I'll be representing all of you. And I don't intend to take that responsibility lightly.
So, you can-- consider my door open. [ Elizabeth seems pretty optimistic about that, at least? ] Unless the paperwork was misleading, that should be half the point of the job.

If he finds out you told me that, you're gonna lose your storytime privileges. [ Elizabeth can't take this as definitive truth on hearing it. It's not her first rodeo. But she can juggle it as a possibility until she knows which way things really lean. ]
So you get along with Rodney.
[ It's. More question than statement. Sorry Rodney love you dearly. ]

[ As if John would ever deny him anything, especially when he asks really nicely. Bright blue eyes and everything. ]
I know what you're thinking. He does come across as a little abrasive with most people. But not with me. He's a little awkward, but cute. Yeah, we get along.

Takes a little bit of digging to get to diamonds, after all. But like with a fair few people in Atlantis, once a person gets there, it's easy to understand. ] Dare I ask who's managed to charm two of my senior personnel that thoroughly?
no subject
Well, only one way to find out. ]
Captain James T. Kirk. [ Yep, going straight to the long version, easier that way. ] Just Jim is fine.

Thought one is "ah, okay, suddenly that makes a lot more sense."
Thought two is "that's impossible."
Thought three is "look at where you are and what you were told about it. Look at the other replies you've gotten." ]
Has anyone told you you sound nothing like William Shatner? [ She sounds less doubtful than she does incredulous. ]
no subject
He's perfectly content with being real in a handful of universes. His, especially— and here, too.
There's a small smile at the look on Elizabeth's face, an eyebrow raising at the question. ]
I should hope so, since I'm not him. Whoever that is.
no subject
Sorry. Little bit of a... galactic in-joke. I hate to say it, but sometimes you just have to be there, Jim. Don't worry; I promise it's not one at your expense.
no subject
[ Among friends, anyway. Not that Elizabeth is a friend per se, but she is on the right side. Same thing. ]
So, as John's boss back in Atlantis, did you also have to keep a big bag of lollipops on your desk drawer?
[ He's 100% joking but also 100% serious, he does have that bag on his desk. ]
no subject
[ They have coffee and that's what really matters. Sweet teeth and oral fixations gotta wait. ]
Don't tell me you've been spoiling him.
no subject
[ There's amusement in his tone, though. Doesn't surprise him that she's tough. Under different circumstances Jim certainly wouldn't be as lax, either. ]
It's called positive reinforcement. [ An important correction, excuse you. ]
no subject
And okay maybe her tone is a little bit dry still. It's all in good humor. ]
Oh, I'm sure it is! How much more positive could you get?
no subject
[ Keyword being 'ask', rather than 'tell'. He's really a very lax boss, if one could call him that. Chain of command is a thing he really doesn't care about here. Besides, John's his friend before anything else, so. ]
I don't really get to go around handing lollipops to my crew back home, so it's nice that I get to do it here. [ He smiles a little. ] You're lucky to have John. I wish I had someone like him on the Enterprise.

My people are the world's best and brightest. They're brave. They're intelligent. They know how to compromise and they've definitely picked up a knack for improvising.
[ A raised eyebrow, a tip of her head. Life on Atlantis isn't always easy, safe, or fair. Never fails to be interesting. ]
More than that, they're all good people. Even the ones who might not admit it or realize it. [ Like John, like Rodney. Like Carson and Teyla and Ronon. The list goes on, really. ] As far as scientific expeditions go, I might be the luckiest person in the universe. So I hate to tell you I can't spare any of them for you.
no subject
In your universe, doubtlessly. [ Okay, the Enterprise isn't on an exclusively scientific expedition, but it's an expedition nonetheless, and Jim is understandably biased. With good reason, too. ] That's alright, I get it. Wouldn't give up my crew for any reason, either. Besides, I get to work with your people here, so that's pretty great.
[ He tips his head a little at her. ] And— I guess we'll be working together too, at some point.
no subject
Elizabeth is... pretty biased, too, yeah. Maybe that's just leader's prerogative. Everyone at the top shows up for the PTA meetings with other leaders, holding their kids' straight-A report cards and a pocketful of appreciation. ]
I'm glad you've been able to. [ None of them are so bad off that they couldn't use more friends. ] And I hope we do. I'll be representing you and yours as much as I represent anyone else. As interesting as sitting in an office making wild guesses about what everyone needs sounds, I'd rather try and keep as many people in the loop as I can.
[ She's seen enough of the former in government for a lifetime. ]
no subject
Instead he's more of a proud leader than anything else. Yes, if he did report cards on his people they'd all have straight A's, and he might even frame them. Or stick them to the walls of the Enterprise with little delta insignia magnets because he can. ]
Prefer a more involved approach, hm? [ He tips his head. ] You're always welcome to come by the Perimeter Guard, of course. It's easier if you're ever wondering about our conditions or if we might need anything in particular.
