Has anyone noticed the message board at headquarters?
[Yes, he's talking about the Perimeter Guard missions.]
I've had a really bad feeling lately, and my suspicions are that I'm not alone on this one.
[He knows how touchy some people can be about saying against this place, but Ed and gods didn't mix well. He spent too much of his life denying their existence just to spend five years under the power of them, or at least beings claiming to be them - and if he eventually could convince himself they weren't, he'd be much happier. That didn't mean he wanted a repeat of that.]
Some of the stuff going on recently has been a little too familiar for my liking, and if there's any possibility that some sleeping god is behind it, I'm going to go check it out.
[It's not easy spending your life afraid of glitter, okay. Between the carnival, the glitter, the sudden influx of people - which he's learned just began a few months ago - this place was starting to look suspiciously like a certain other event in his life. Even if he's wrong, he doesn't even want to chance that this thing waking up is going to change the dynamic everyone had grown so used to here.
If it being asleep is what's causing the portal to function the way it is, though? He doesn't want to kill or destroy it, either. In his experience that would send most people, if not everyone, home - and a lot of the residents here didn't want that. If he was being honest, himself included.]
[ooc: Chloe and Ed are at it again, Chloe will have a log up sometime next week to get this plot going. In the meantime, Ed's suspicions are super high and no one else cares so he's none too happy, atm. I will be throwing up a public plurk for plotting and discussion, and linking it hereonce I've put it up.]

That sounds good I guess. The more the more you may find out.
[ He didn't work well with others a lot of the time but this was mysterious enough that he would try to behave for awhile. ]
If it's dangerous you both will stand behind me and let me worry about it. I'll bring everything I have just in case, but if its reconnaissance we might not have to worry.

He hadn't had Al, but he did have other friends - people that met him before he ever arrived, who claimed they knew him, somehow. After awhile of staying there that sort of thing became a common enough occurrence that he started to understand it, himself.
At the last part Ed made a face, he might be used to working in teams but he certainly wasn't used to taking orders.]
We can handle ourselves.
[That was a tad defensive. They weren't going in a group so that one person could shoulder all of the responsibility. Four years in the military and fighting homunculi followed by four years in Purg was one hell of a resume, even if that last year in Attollo was a bit cushy in comparison.]
We're not on the Guard for no reason, you know. We have experience fighting.
no subject
[ It had been awhile since he he had casually mentioned his death, it used to be such habit that he didn't even blink as he said it. He couldn't help but fall a bit into order giving, somehow he usually fell into the lead of whatever group he ended in, but he was always questioned due to his morally gray nature. He wasn't bothered that they could handle themselves it was actually a bit of a relief. ]
I assumed that, look. Someone I used to know used to say, you may not be the strongest or best, but you can always be the most prepared. That can make the difference in a lose and a victory. Your research is important, if their is a sleeping god out there, god only knows what we are up against. Chuthlu in his mythos drives people mad. Other gods just eat mother fuckers. It's more a keep an open mind and be prepared to do whatever it takes to survive.
[ Then he shrugged a bit. ]
no subject
Trust me, I know.
[Ed wouldn't be stupid enough to think dying was a cake walk, even if he hadn't experienced it himself, but talking about it always reminded him that he was just going home to do it again, and honestly he could think of about a million reasons to put that off for as long as possible.]
Right, right.... I'm not looking to get into any trouble here. We're just looking around.
[For now.
He can tell Jason's going to be stubborn about this, but as stubborn as Ed was, he was also famous for agreeing to what other people want to hear just to ease their minds.
Letting Jay think he's going to protect them was hardly any worse than the number of times he lied to the military, or even his own brother, when it was necessary.]
no subject
Good, as long as we are crystal clear.
[ He would be stubborn, but eventually he would ease up. ]
When do you want to head out?
no subject
I'm going to submit it to the Guard, to see if we can't get away with it being a work related assignment. It might take a few days to get out there and back, even if all goes well - we don't want anyone getting fired for going AWOL.
[He paused, as if considering something before muttering.]
Sometime after that stupid dance, probably. If it gets approved as work related, I'm thinking Monday would be best. That'll give everyone a day to recover.
[From all the drinking, dancing and fun they were having. Or in Ed's case sheer death by embarrassment.]
no subject
That's smart, getting paid to explore sounds like it has it's perks. Gives me time to get some more ammo to just in case things go sideways out there.
[ One could never be to prepared.]
Yeah, Monday sounds good. I think we will all need a day if it's going to be the big deal people are saying it will be.
no subject
I have a habit of getting paid for my own means.
[He might be smirking at that, four years in the military getting paid to hunt down the Philosopher's Stone? Nothing compared to actually making your personal interests the reason you're getting paid. Ed could get real comfortable here.]
Never underestimate anything in these places. Especially things that probably involve hundreds of people in attendance.
[A beat.]
Yeah, stock up. I'm not looking to get into any trouble, but... if it comes we'll be ready.
no subject
Smart man. [ He thought of Roy in that moment. And his stupid 'Rent-A-Bat' idea. That was a shit storm, but he didn't have Kickback money here so, he would take what he could get. It's not like he had found drug lords to shot in the face yet. Keyword was yet.]
I always aim to be ready. Maybe I could get my hands on a few flash grenades. It may not be needed but they could always come in handy.
[ He muttered before leaning down in his chair and started to unzip the sides of his boots to pull them off.]
Are you going to the party?
no subject
I don't have a choice, Yuffie somehow talked me into it and Al signed me up for the damn auction.
[He can probably feel the distaste in the air, but Ed doesn't look toward his brother at the comment.]
no subject
Ahh, yeah I got signed up for that shit to. I don't know who signed me up but its for charity so whatever.
[ He's a lying liar, he signed himself up. But he will deny it forever.]
It wont be that bad, hell its a chance to dress to the nines and go and pretend to be someone else. I'm looking forward to it.
no subject
Yeah, sure.
[Charity. Whatever. He's still tempted to transmute his brother into a wall for a few hours as revenge.]
You're into that sort of thing?
[Really, dressing to the nines wasn't Ed's idea of a good time, and it didn't seem like something Jay would enjoy. Admittedly, he could have fun, but sometimes it took a bit before he lightened up.]
I guess the whole pretending to be someone else thing will be interesting, at least...
no subject
Not really, not the fancy dress part, but I used to get drug to that kind of shit back when I was living with B.
[ He had not mentioned anyone named B, but it was a habit he had of dropping peoples names in favor of their first letter.]
I like the idea of a masquerade though, if I had a way to pull off the outfit I'd want to wear it would be completely aces. And yeah, I do like pretending to be someone else, my life sucks, pretty sure your life sucks, so for a night we can be anyone we want.
no subject
I'm fine being myself.
[Really, he's never thought about it before. The whole thing kind of seems ridiculous, but add to it the requirement to dress up and wear a mask, it was just a whole new level of weird Ed was not used to. ]
What do you need to pull it off? I've made outfits for this sort of thing before.
no subject
[ He asked seriously, the look in his blue eyes showed how serious he was in that moment, before it slipped away and he smiled a little. The idea of being able to pull off what he wanted was a more welcomed one than commiserating with his new roomies.]
The Red Death from Edgar Allen Poe's Mask of the Red Death. Do you know the story? Basically I just need a red and black suit and a floor length blood red cloak. I can get a mask there apparently.

[Would he change the fact that he had automail? Sure, if it meant going back an undoing what he'd done to get it in the first place. Removing it now though? That was another story. One he definitely didn't want to approach during this conversation. The automail served as a reminder for what they'd done - what he'd done - and as long as Al was whole again he didn't care much about whether or not he had it.
By now he was used to it, and it made a pretty convenient weapon - which was important for settings like this.]
Never really had time to read much literature.
[He was too busy hunting down rumors. Besides, if canon was anything to go by comic books were more his speed. As much as that concept may seem to conflict entirely with his personality.]
With the right materials we can put pretty much anything together. A cape and suit shouldn't be too hard. I used to make the red coat Al has, myself... back when I wore it.
no subject
[ He stated like the fact he felt it was, though in truth the list wasn't really that big. Mostly that he could have saved his mother, and actually reached out to someone, like Dick or Bruce before he ran off to Egypt and got killed.
It wasn't like living in the past ever did him any justice it just reawakening that rage he worked so hard to bury deep within him. He shook his head some as he sighed.]
I wish I could change that, there is so much good literature Ed. Everything here is wrong, there are changed details in every story I know by heart. So I cant even hand them to you. I'd have to do like kiddie storytime to get it right.
[ He's not above it...]
How about the sheets? I mean it's not like I'd be asleep while were gone? I have a suit already I just would need the colors changed.
no subject
Telling stories is how we learn about each other's worlds, isn't it?
[Ed was used to stories, telling them, hearing them. It didn't matter whether they were fiction or someone's life back home. If his own future was any indication, he's really big on stories in Germany, actually.]
Whatever you want it made out of, that'll be comfortable. Although... we can't change colors of things unless you want to grab some dye before the dance. It'll be faster if we do it, but it'll be easier to just buy fabric in the right color, honestly.
[Ed could dye something in a matter of seconds, no sitting around and waiting for it to absorb like most instructions said, but even he's aware that there are easier ways to go about it.]
no subject
Pretty much, well I mean we have books and the internet and TV and shit, but stories man. You can learn so much from stories.
[ Look he would sit and listen to stories all day if he had the choice.]
Well shit, Looks like I'm gonna go to the market later tonight and see how much red faberic I can get. This isn't me complaining by the way, I'm grateful you guys would help me with it.
no subject
We don't have most of those where I'm from, books and stories are it.
[At the last part he nodded, not at all put off by the complaint.]
It's really no problem, just tell us what you want and it'll be done in a flash.
[The more specific, the better.]

[ He can still remember a time that saying that felt alien. Even being able to touch a computer seemed alien, and now he has one of the most expensive phones they had to offer back home, in a damned heavy duty case because of how his life tended to go. It kind of put life in prospective for him at times.]
I'll head out and look into that later then, I'm planning to go to the bar later anyway.
[ Which was where he spent a lot of time, reading no less.]
no subject
[Maybe Jay would have an approach that Ed could better understand or find an interest in, but his tone says he doubts that. He didn't even have a phone, he arrived with his device from Attollo and they had modded it to work on this network, and that's all Ed knew about it.]
Sure. Let me know.
