In my — [ He pauses for a brief moment. ] — previous home, I ran my own law firm at Nelson & Murdock, so I guarantee that I have the study and experience of being a well-practiced defense attorney. [ His voice remains soft as he finishes: ]

[ He briefly switches the setting to video, a dark haired man now in view of the screen, round glasses over his eyes as he offers a warm smile. ] While I won't be able to identify you for — [ He gestures to his eyes, waving his fingers. ] Obvious reasons. Huh. I suppose that is something you could do no matter what was holding you back We don't have those where I'm from. All lawful judgements are made at the Thing in the presence of the king.

[Yes, that is Thing with a capital T.]

The thing ... ?

[ That was just a vague statement, wasn't it? ]

Yes. The Thing. [It clearly translates better in Old Norse. Inn Hlutr.] The gathering where all Vikings who are above the age to be considered men gather to discuss the politics of the year. We vote on issues, pass judgments on criminals, and bring forth ideas for the king to approve of.

[fogwells]

[ His brows raise, taken aback. ]

Sounds like all the branches of government rolled into one. [ But — ] You're a ... Viking?

[ragnarsson]

Yes. [And proud of it.]

I forget not everyone here knows that. My name is Ivar Ragnarsson, sometimes called Ivar the Boneless. [If Matt's a fan of European history, it's possible he's run across the name. Ivar will be known one day for his historical cleverness, cruelty, and being unable to walk. But he's at the start of his career right now, still just a sixteen year old kid angry at the world, and willing to raze all of England to the ground because of it.]

[ It's not quite his area of expertise, his studies having mostly stuck to the different cultural ideas of law. Though he's skimmed through the age of Vikings once or twice, it's not something that sticks out in any of his readings. ]

That's — pretty incredible. I hadn't realized this place brought along people from different ages of history. Though I suppose there's really no basis for having a bias over it in the first place.

It seems to pull in more people from after the year 2000. I'm more of an exception. I haven't met anyone that was pulled from closer to my own time.

[He'd wondered why there was such a pattern. Maybe people from the future were more adaptable to all the new tech of the city. After all, he was still learning even after being here five months.]
