What is it about the power going out that turns everyone into snivelling babies? It's a little dark, not the end of the god damn world. There are more than a few people here who come from times before electricity was even a thing, so stop being a baby just because you suddenly have to deal with some shitty candlelight for awhile. [ This, all spoken as though Yuri wasn't the poster child for a technological addiction. He's had to go without snapchat for what feels like a century now, and he misses instagram terribly. What the fuck is wrong with this place that it doesn't have some version of instagram?

But that's not really why he's decided to post to the network, anyway. ]

For all of the monsters and the shitty weather and the other bullshit, I have exactly one nice thing to say about this place:

They gave me back my cat. [ For a split second Yuri's expression softens, but it's gone too quickly to really make note of, as he spins his cellphone down towards the floor, where a small, fluffy white and black cat is winding around his ankles, meowing softly. ] If you're allergic to cats, don't come up to the third floor. I'll try to keep her contained to my apartment, but she's an escape artist. If you see her around, bring her back to me. And if anyone ever hurts her, I will fucking destroy you.

I can at least try. [ Whatever softness Yuri had been showing vanishes as he scowls, green eyes going sharp and hard as he glares at his phone, at James as he switches into Russian. ]

It's not like I haven't been away from home before. I don't miss him, I just want him to be all right. He has a bad back. I can take care of myself. [ He sneers a little, all hard edges and sharp spikes once more. Maybe a little more so than usual, compensating for showing any glimpse of hurt that he misses family. It's stupid to be so sentimental, it's stupid to show such a weakness to a glorified stranger. ]

If you want to, I won't stop you. It'll be at least five or ten miles, though. [Possibly more. Trying to keep up with a super-soldier is hard, Bucky knows this better than anyone.

But then the softness he's seen from Yuri is gone, and honestly? The prickly anger feels almost easier, more familiar.]

Depending on how their portal works, it might end up being like you were never gone from there. Timelines can be wonky. A friend of mine here is from farther along than I am.

It keeps sounding as though you're trying to talk me out of it. Look, if I can't do it I'll stop. But I'm already getting real sick of everyone underestimating what I can really do. [ Yuri is positively grinding his teeth, now. Bristling as Korolevna mewls for his attention, shifting in his arm to be put back down now that Yuri is grumpy. ]

Whatever. [ He grunts, not bothering to keep up the conversation in Russian anymore. It's stupid anyway, and speaking in Russian just makes it out to be more sentimental than it is. ] I just wish I could send him a letter or something. Make sure he'll be all right.

I'm just making you aware. Hell, I kept up with a super-soldier at sixteen, no reason you can't if you want to. [Then again, he trained extensively with the British SAS and still constantly had to prove himself. He shrugs briefly.]

I'm sure he will be. You might try asking the people in charge if they can send small things one-way, though.

Yeah whatever. We'll see. [ Yuri is still awhile off sixteen, but while he might not have trained with the SAS, training seven to nine hours a day on the ice and off wasn't anything to write off, either. If nothing else, Yuri was definitely going to try. And once Yuri had settled his mind on something, his drive to achieve it was almost unstoppable. ]

That's not a bad idea. [ He admits, shrugging his shoulders a little. ] Just to let my old man know I'm okay. If he's even noticed I'm missing at all.

[They will indeed see, because Yuri essentially has a standing invite to join them for runs now. He's not the only one, sometimes they go with Sam too, or Michael for a shorter time, but Bucky will ditch Steve for the kid.]

He might, or the time you return to, when you can return, it could be just moments after you left. It's hard to say what'll happen.

Yeah, but it can't hurt to try. To ask the portal people. [ He pauses, and then makes a face, scowling. ] They have to have some sort of better designation than that.

No, it doesn't hurt to see what they can do. [The face gets a little laugh out of him.] I don't know what the title would be. I know some of the welcome wagon guys are Perimeter Guard but that's about it.

Portal People sounds like the title of another bad horror movie. It can have sequels; Revenge of the Portal People, Attack of the Portal People, Ride of the Portal People... [ He coughs a bit, if only to disguise his own slight smile. ] Whatever their official title is, I'll talk to them.

Ask them their job title too, now I'm curious. [He can't quite hide his own smirk of amusement.] I'd watch those.

Maybe that's what I'll make my next career. Production and screen writing of awful movies about portal people. [ Speaking of watching things, though... ] Apparently there's a second 'Revenge of the Rat' film- 'Revenge of the Rats. There's more than one pissed off science experiment now.

Sounds like you've got a head start on ideas. [But it seems significant, that Yuri is mentioning a sequel to the movie they'd watched together. He's a little touched.] Oh yeah? When's that on?

Not like it's hard. They practically write themselves with a name like that.

[ Yuri glanced away from the screen for a moment, looking towards something off camera, before flicking back to the other, rolling his shoulders in a slow shrug that he hopes looks easier and nonchalant than it feels. ]

Whenever you feel like it. I borrowed it on DVD from the library.

[So not only did he find the sequel, he went and rented it from the library, and invited Bucky to watch it with him. He smiles a little, slight but there.]

Tomorrow evening sound good? I can bring food.

Sure, tomorrow sounds great.

[ Yuri paused for a moment, glancing back over his shoulder towards the fridge, before rolling his shoulders in a stiff shrug that he was clearly putting effort into making appear more relaxed than it was. ] You don't have to, but you can if you want. I've got some munchies and other shit here.

I'll just bring some sodas then? The convenience store near the Guard HQ has sample packs with different flavors. [There are so many types of fruit that he's never seen before, and apparently they'll make sodas out of all of them here.]

All right, but if you bring anything really weird you're trying it first. [ Yuri stuck out his tongue. Sure, it was a little bit childish. But it felt suitable, right then. Given that he was actively being more playful. ]

Is that a challenge? I guarantee I've eaten worse than some of the weird convenience store snacks I've seen.

Bring it the hell on, old man. I promise if we're going down that road, to find the really weird shit.

Oh we're on. We're definitely on.

One rule: Nothing from your floor's locked fridge. [ He means Stephen's weird tentacle monster sustenance, and while he figured that Bucky wouldn't bring that down anyway, he still felt the need to establish it as a thing. ] Anything else is fair game.

I don't mess with magic horrorshows. [He's staying the hell out of that fridge, thanks.] Convenience store or specialty grocery finds only.

Smart choice. And all right, deal. Let's see who can find the weirdest snack.

And then we'll see who can stomach eating the weirdest snack.
