Good afternoon. My name is Roy Greenhilt.

[Seven words -- no, no, he doesn't have to keep himself to the word limit of a Sending spell with this strange device, even though he's given to understand its transmission functions are most analogous to that spell.]

[Don't mind that brief pause. He's just going to be here acting like he knows what he's doing.]

As many of you are no doubt aware, there are numerous exploratory missions set out to benefit the quarantine and ensure the survival of its people. I am seeking others who would be willing to join a party dedicated to routinely undertaking these missions, as well as various other freelance opportunities that may present themselves. I'm an experienced adventurer and party leader, so I'd like to put those skills to use here for the betterment of the quarantine.

I generally prefer in-person interviews but I recognize we're all a bit busy adjusting to our new circumstances, particularly after the storms that just rolled through and a recent concern about attacks on the quarantine, so I'm willing to be flexible. My own duties aren't to be put aside on a whim either! [Roy offers a grin to the camera which is a little stale, the joke lame enough that it proves he's not quite comfortable with this whole thing.]

Why does it have to be formal? I was taught how to use a few weapons but it's not like the people who taught me were professionals. It's enough that I can do what I need to do.

Because it is possible to develop bad habits and suboptimal techniques in that case. And this gives me an idea... why don't I take you on as something of a student? You'll get out on the adventures and gain the benefit of training in a broader range of weaponry, some of which might prove more efficient or effective against the creatures out there than your current weapons, and I'll feel confident in bringing you knowing that we'll be honing your combat techniques.

Plus there are things you can teach me in turn, I have no doubt about that.

Ah, so it's an item-based power. [Roy understands this. (Roy doesn't understand this, but not for lack of trying.)] How hard is 'pretty hard'?

[She is so, so skeptical of this, given their conversation so far. What is he going to try to teach her to do?]

I don't want to work with any sort of crazy weapon I won't be able to easily get my hands on. Guns, knives... stuff like hatchets and blunt weapons. Those are the most useful.

No, no, no weird exotic weapons. I'm proficient in all simple and martial weapons, and capable of teaching the basics of combat with them. You want to stuck to knives, maces, and unarmed combat, we can put an emphasis on those.

And what's the catch? What if I can't teach you what you want to know?

[She'll spend money on lessons, but not too much. There are larger concerns still.]

Those are secondary, really. The main benefit I get is passing on skills and abilities that will help you protect yourself in both the present and the future.

[What is with this guy and this weird terminology? But whatever. He was at least, you know, not freaked out by the very idea.

Hard enough to probably kill a guy. I mean, if I tried.

So you'll do it out of the kindness of your heart? You won't get far doing that.

[It's pretty hard to get her to believe you using that logic. People like that don't make it.]

That's the sort of thing that can change quickly in an adventuring lifestyle, I warn you. I definitely favor peaceful resolution whenever possible -- and around here, it definitely seems like the main threat to the city is monsters rather than other people, but. [Sometimes you end up killing. A lot of killing, if an entire army is up against you, for example.]

[Hmph. Alignment trouble.]

While I can understand the position coming from a world of scarcity... making the world a better place has always been my goal in doing what I do. Sure, sometimes it got a bit tangled up with more selfish and personal motivations... but it's gotten me pretty far, honestly.

I'll also add that doing things out of duty, responsibility, and moral obligation absolutely does not preclude getting directly rewarded for doing those things.

[She may be sarcastic, but that doesn't mean she isn't interested.]

Thank you. [Roy chooses to ignore the sarcasm. As a master sarcast himself, he has that option.] And I will. I'll look into verifying what might be necessary to go through the necessary legal channels for missions and explorations, too, if they exist.

'Adventuring lifestyle'? [Don't laugh, Scott. Don't laugh. Okay, don't laugh TOO obviously.]

Look, I only punch people who really deserve it. I'm not like the Hulk or anything.

Yes, that's my point. It's easy to encounter people who deserve it. [Even by Roy's standards of decency and respect to others.] Though externally here we seem to have primarily monsters to deal with.

Actually, it'd be kind of a relief to punch the snot out of some monsters.

I understand that feeling pretty well, honestly.

I think if we want to go outside, we should just go outside. We're owed that much.

I don't fault that attitude in the slightest, but it's always good to know what the actual rules are. [She wouldn't buy the idea that a legitimate authority ought to be obeyed by virtue of being legitimate and an authority, so Roy takes another angle.] Sometimes it's a matter of picking your fights. Play ball when it isn't important not to do so, you know?

I know how to pick my fights, okay?

I'm just saying it shouldn't even be an issue in the first place. Look, whatever. Do what you have to do.
