Good afternoon. My name is Roy Greenhilt.

[Seven words -- no, no, he doesn't have to keep himself to the word limit of a Sending spell with this strange device, even though he's given to understand its transmission functions are most analogous to that spell.]

[Don't mind that brief pause. He's just going to be here acting like he knows what he's doing.]

As many of you are no doubt aware, there are numerous exploratory missions set out to benefit the quarantine and ensure the survival of its people. I am seeking others who would be willing to join a party dedicated to routinely undertaking these missions, as well as various other freelance opportunities that may present themselves. I'm an experienced adventurer and party leader, so I'd like to put those skills to use here for the betterment of the quarantine.

I generally prefer in-person interviews but I recognize we're all a bit busy adjusting to our new circumstances, particularly after the storms that just rolled through and a recent concern about attacks on the quarantine, so I'm willing to be flexible. My own duties aren't to be put aside on a whim either! [Roy offers a grin to the camera which is a little stale, the joke lame enough that it proves he's not quite comfortable with this whole thing.]

An adventurer? Interviews? Good grief.

I'll be the first to admit that this is a somewhat higher level of skepticism than I had hoped to be greeted with, but I'm not particularly surprised.

How good are you at fighting monsters? How well equipped are you?

As a mid-high-level adventurer I've fought a fairly diverse array of monsters, including demons, dragons, liches, vampires, and dinosaurs. With regards to equipment, my sword is a starmetal alloy that also happens to be an ancestral weapon.

[Roy is fairly confident in these answers and delivers them quite matter-of-factly.]

That's... is that... Are you for real?

[Forgive her. She's still having to come to terms with all of this fantasy nonsense.]

Look, I'm just trying to get my hands on a shotgun so I can shoot some monsters in the face. My pistol only does so much. Would going along with you give me a better chance of getting my hands on one?

Yes. Very real, I assure you.

[What kind of question is that? Roy can't keep a minor frown off his face, even as he makes an effort to answer the question reasonably.]

An adventuring lifestyle generally tends to provide rewards in the form of superior equipment and wealth to purchase superior equipment.

Yeah that's kind of a crappy line if that's what you're using to persuade people. I don't know much about an "adventuring" lifestyle, but I know what it's like to try and scavenge for what I need. Most of the time you go out there isn't any guarantee you'll find anything.

I'm looking for something very specific, you know.

[Hey, the line isn't crappy! But she pretty much has him dead to rights on the rest of it.]

I'm not going to lie and say it's a guarantee, I can't promise that. I can say that every member of my adventuring party back home whose primary contribution to a combat was weapon-based gained a superior weapon during the course of our adventures.

There's also the fairly significant chance that a good performance on an exploration may lead to the city itself offering a reward.

They just happened to find a superior weapon? What sort of places were you robbing? It's not like you just kill a monster and rip a new sword free of its chest. That's not how things work.

A reward is great and all, but I'm a little gimped if I go into this thing as is. I'm just a kid with a knife and a pistol.

I had my sword shattered and then reforged with starmetal alloy during the course of the adventures. Elan found a new rapier in the Dungeon of Dorukan, then inherited his mentor's Chaos blade. Belkar got a new dagger from one of our loot troves after we beat back Tarquin's allies. Haley stole a bow from an ex-Thieves' Guild archer who betrayed her.

[Simple enough, right?]

I'm going to admit, and I absolutely do not intend this offensively, that your age is of some concern to me.

Sorry, but that all sounds like a fantasy to me. Maybe that's the norm around here, I don't know.

[She makes a face.]

My age is a concern to a lot of people when it shouldn't be. I have to make a living here same as everyone else.

I agree with that, as unfortunate as it is. My main concern is, and again I don't mean to diminish you by saying this, that you haven't reached your full physical development, which would put you in a disadvantage in any fight.

I'm guessing you didn't have a choice where you came from. [That had better be the answer, in any case, or else he has a whole lot of question for a few responsible parties.]

No, I didn't have any choice. So I adapted.

[Her method of fighting zombies up close differed from others, but it could be vastly more effective sometimes.]

Ugh. I'm sorry for that. No one should have to not have a choice in whether they fight or not. [Even when that choice is morally indefensible, people deserve the freedom to choose.]

I'm glad I had the chance to learn. I might not have lived this long otherwise.

[Plenty of children had been sheltered and they hadn't made it.]

Am I coming along or not?

[Roy is really, really iffy on this. On the one hand, every responsible fiber of him is telling him that bringing a child into a combat environment is a gross abrogation of his duties. On the other hand, every moral fiber is saying that if even through grossly unfortunate circumstances, this girl actually possesses a reasonable number of class levels, then he ought to respect that ability as fairly as he would anyone else with a similar level.]

[What may decide him is the solid impression that if he doesn't work with her, she'll do what she wants on her own or with other people that will not have her interests at heart or will guide her down a darker path.]

I'd like to get a reasonable assessment of your ability. That's something I'd want of anyone. Demonstrations or at least history.

History? Okay. I've been fighting the undead for the last five years.

[That's basically all her world is now: fighting walkers and trying to survive and/or build a community, as futile as all that might be. For beings that moved so slow the walking dead sure did cause a lot of damage.]

I learned to shoot a gun when I was eight.

[She could demonstrate her weapon skills, but it's not like she's some modern day Robin Hood. Her aim is pretty good, but nothing special.]

Ahh. That would explain it. ['Zombie horde' is a pretty standard trope, after all.] I'm guessing you have some decent survival skills to go along with that, then?

You could say that, yeah.

[Way to be casual about it, man.]

I'm still alive.

All right... what about other skills? Technological familiarity, for example? [Roy is well aware this is one venue in which a girl less than half his age could easily surpass him, if she comes from a world more familiar with the devices and gadgets here.]

Uh... I have a few. I can drive a car and work a lot of basic machinery. Don't know much about computers, programming, or any of that.

[They didn't exactly have the internet anymore.]

Hmm, that's actually reasonably helpful. It's better than I can do, anyway. I'm guessing by the same token you don't have any skill or familiarity with magic.

Until I got here, I didn't even think magic was real.

[She's still having a hard time dealing with this issue - especially when talking to people like this guy, who just makes it all seem so ridiculous and unreal.]

That's fine, I have no experience with all this advanced gadgetry either. [He figures the situations are pretty analogous.] I'm going to assume that includes more esoteric disciplines such as psionics, as well.

What such as what?

[She just stares blankly at the screen.]
