How do you go about picking gifts?

[ He's just going to dive right in. No real introduction, but Steve figures that most people won't care too much about who is asking this or why. ]

I'm sure a lot of you are better at this than I am, so I guess I need some advice. How do you find a good gift for someone that already has far more than you've seen for half your lifetime? Not that I'm aiming to impress anyone, but it'd be nice to pull it off.

[ He grins a little. Okay, so maybe he's trying. Just a little. But Steve is rarely the one that surprises anyone else. He just wants a chance at doing something cool for a change. Of course, he's realistic and knows this is unlikely, but he can try. ]

I'm in a little over my head on this one. Everyone else always has the flashy stuff covered.

I think if it's someone with everything, they often still lack in the less flashy areas.

Perhaps a nice dinner date, or a trip somewhere special...!

Well, a dinner date would be nice, but probably not very impressive on my budget.

[ He's smiling as he says that, though. It's a fond thought and one he's really considering. ]

Really good gifts, I think, are both things people need and can use. Something that just sits on a shelf can be nice but not as useful.

You could always try something more practical, if they already have enough fancy stuff coming their way. Is there anything they use regularly that needs replacing?

Yeah, I said I didn't want to get something that would just be in the way, but he said it didn't matter.

[ Steve sighs, because it does matter. ]

Now that I'm looking around, I guess I'm really not that good at this.

Something that could be worn, maybe?

Something that reminds them of you and how much you care about them.

You know, I... don't actually know. He's got magic, so I kind of assumed he just waved his hands and made stuff whenever he needed it.

I think that it depends on the person and your relationship with them. [Finding the 'perfect' gift has been something Alec's had numerous discussion over with a certain warlock.] I usually go with something that has some meaning to them or to both of us. I'm not sure about the person you're trying to find a gift for, but it might be that the gifts that they were given were to earn a favor, not because someone wanted to give them something special.

learn how to knit and then make them something. even if it totally sucks they'll have to pretend to like it bc it's from the heart!

[ Since his consequent fights with Thor and Taako, Loki has been spending more time in Steve's room, making himself as much of an annoyance as he can to repress any kind of cathartic feeling he may need to vent. So when he stops Steve actually using his device for once, he comes over, draping his arms around Steve's neck and resting his chin on his shoulder. ]

Hmm. People certainly have interesting ideas of gift-giving.

I mean, step one would probably be not talking about it on the public network, kinda ruins the surprise and that's like half the point of gifts, my dude

Well, it's hopefully a good relationship. I wouldn't want to assume, but I like to think we've come a little way.

[ That answer might be teasing the person in question. But Steve more seriously considers the answer Alec gives him, because it does sound like Loki's past from what he can guess. The god does carry a grudge. He probably didn't get many genuinely nice gifts. ]

So I should try to pick out something special. Unique.

[ He is so not imaginative enough for this. ]

Could get a puppy.

I don't want to make anyone pretend to like my gifts.

[ Steve doesn't sound displeased at all by the comment. He's still very engaged in trying to puzzle out this gift giving problem he has and he's getting all the help he can from everyone. The fact Loki is criticizing before he's even gotten a chance to try anything is just typical Loki. He smirks as he keeps responding. ]

So does that mean you agree with them?

[ Why didn't he think of that?? ]

That would have been a good idea... I was just hoping to think of something impressive enough.

[ Loki huffs lightly against Steve's neck with a slow smile. ]

If I told you what I thought, that would ruin the fun.

I pick things I don't mind having thrown at the back of my head later.

[Which doesn't narrow it down much, surprisingly.]

[ Thor actually gets a grin out of Steve, because that answer is just the definition of their relationship. He's actually starting to like that constant. ]

I can't afford to get anything from either Tony, Thor.

Cool magic shit. Like half it's fucking fake cause that's how these assholes make their money so you gotta have an eye for it but if you buy well you can go for either something useful and unique or what pretty much amounts to a magical puzzle for him to solve

[ There is a brief note of melancholy, even though it's well-hidden. He pulls away a little to give Steve room for his responses, even if Loki rests his hand on his shoulder. ]

I like scarves as much as anyone does. I have a few.

What's illegal about them?

Are they dangerous?
