Hey, show of hands, who here's got too much free time right now? [ HE'LL START. Look at that hand go up. ] Come on, at least one of you watching raised your hand, too. So let's do something about it. Get drunk in public, find a corner to loiter on, a shop to vandalize, you know, normal kids' stuff.

[ He grins. ]

Kidding! [ With a shrug and a careless wave of his hand. ] I'd get up to way worse than that if I wanted to be a public menace. [ Still kidding? EH. ]

Anyway, I can't be the only one here with nothing better to do, so who wants to play a game of Would You Rather? Look, I can even start:

[ He claps his hands together and makes a show of thinking. ]

Would you rather... Have superpowers, but die young. Or be perfectly average, and live a long, painfully uneventful life?

And he makes a bit of a face as he gives his own answer. ]

I'd rather have superpowers and a shorter life than overstay my welcome with the most boring existence imaginable.

Situation depending. Am I dying for a cause, or am I dying because the powers are killing me? How long do I get to live? Is the uneventful life uneventful in the sense that nothing too overly exciting happens, but I still get to live a nice, long, happy life?

Hm...

Okay: Circumstances of death are negotiable, and... let's say a quarter of your lifespan. A third if you're lucky! [ Since age is relative and all. ] And when I say uneventful, I mean painfully mundane and boring. Same old crap, day in, day out. Probably in a cubicle.

A quarter. So that gives me like--what, two more years? No thanks.

There's a lot of mundane things I'd like to experience over and over again. Working in a cubicle for years would be better than dying without even really getting to live. Even a painfully mundane life style still has some merit.

Like what? [ It's probably no surprise that he can't think of anything better than Using until he burns out young and fast. ] If I had to pick between the two, I'd rather go out like James Dean. Live fast, die young, blahblah. You live forever if you make a big enough impact.

Boring people are forgotten [ He snaps his fingers. ] like that.

A family. Friends. Love. Something to make the boring, mundane, average lifestyle all worth it. Growing old together with someone you care about.

There's a lot more to live for than having four seconds of fame. And even those who do have their four seconds aren't remembered forever.

[ He wrinkles his nose. ] Gross. [ But then... Chase laughs it off, like he's TOTES JUST KIDDING. DEFINITELY DOESN'T FIND LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP GROSS. ]

You've got a point there. So the key's to go really big. Like Joan of Arc or Billy the Kid or... Caligula... [ Okay that last one might be a stretch. But Caligula died young, so it totes counts! ]

If that's what you want out of life. But do you really want to be remembered over living?

Generally speaking? Nah, of course I'd rather live.

But it depends on the kind of life we're talking here. So, for the purposes of this game... Give me a short, superpowered life!

How poor? And how much hurt are we talking here?

Enough money that you don't live in a box, but not enough to live comfortably. And the amount of hurt's equivalent to how much riches you're getting.

Would you rather... stay in one city for the rest of your life-- no trips out of town-- or be forced to move to a different city every year?

Depends on the city. I live in New York City, it's got enough of everything.

Forced to live in a small city? Definitely move every year.

I was gonna go with 'move,' myself, but I hadn't considered New York...

In New York, you can be in Sacramento, Seattle, and San Francisco all at once.

What, back home or here? This place is just fine. Ipswich is boring as Hell. Same with Haversfield, where I grew up.

Back home. I can see that. Growing up in the city, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Would you rather lose all of your money and valuables or all of the pictures you have ever taken?

I mean... technically I already lost both when I got here. [ But in the interest of playing the game: ] I'd lose the pictures. [ Grin. ] I'm a terrible photographer.
