[ BEHOLD... a teen witch sitting on his bed. He seems way too energetic, considering he's indoors and doing nothing. (lbr he's nursing a magic-high right now, and it's got him feeling both restless and aimless at the same time.) ]
Hey, show of hands, who here's got too much free time right now? [ HE'LL START. Look at that hand go up. ] Come on, at least one of you watching raised your hand, too. So let's do something about it. Get drunk in public, find a corner to loiter on, a shop to vandalize, you know, normal kids' stuff.
[ He grins. ]
Kidding! [ With a shrug and a careless wave of his hand. ] I'd get up to way worse than that if I wanted to be a public menace. [ Still kidding? EH. ]
Anyway, I can't be the only one here with nothing better to do, so who wants to play a game of Would You Rather? Look, I can even start:
[ He claps his hands together and makes a show of thinking. ]
Would you rather... Have superpowers, but die young. Or be perfectly average, and live a long, painfully uneventful life?

[ BINGO, Ed. Being a cheeky liar is much more Chase's idea of a good time. ]
What passes for fun in your world?

Wouldn't know, it's been too long since I've been there.
[This is said a little dryly.]

[ Masterful logic there, Chase. ]

[A perfectly honest question, in Ed's position. Considering the different worlds he'd been exposed to, it was perfectly reasonable to believe someone's world counted that as a fun way to pass the time.]
If it was 'normal kids stuff' where you're from, I don't think you'd be so quick to insist you were kidding. Why bother, when you're trying to sell the point it's just typical behavior where you're from?

I'm just messing around, man. Do you want to play the game or not? [ The whole WOULD YOU RATHER game, that is. ]
no subject
[People overreact to things a lot, Ed's just used to rolling his eyes at it.]
From the beginning or starting now?
[This is an important distinction to make, okay. He needs clarification before he can give a proper answer.]
I don't think I could even manage painfully uneventful anymore, and if it had always been that way it would get boring pretty quick, wouldn't it? I've kind of already done both, anyway.
no subject
[ Chase hums, seeming to think on Ed's remarks for a moment. ] Yeah. I kind of did, too. Thirteen uneventful years, then: magic. [ Pause. He taps his chin. ] Or does it not count if the boring stuff was all, like, before high school...

[Not nearly getting his brother killed a whole bunch? Sign him up. Normal him can be bitter about being bored for 80 years, he's fine with that. Yes, he's definitely dissecting your little game, Chase. Sorry.]
High school-?
[He has no idea what that means. He does think he's following the rest of it, though.]
You went thirteen years before suddenly being able to do magic? Is that how it works on your world?
no subject
[ As to the question... ] That's right. You go your whole life thinking you're one thing, then your thirteenth birthday rolls around and: [ He laughs, spreading his arms grandly with a grin. ] Surprise! You're a witch!
[ There may be some bitterness in his voice, in his grin, just beneath the surface. It's not exactly a pleasant memory. ]
At least, that's how it was for me.
no subject
[Spoilers: Joke's on him, that's exactly what happens.]
I see.
[He looks sympathetic, but he's not entirely sure how to respond to that type of news. It was clearly a bigger issue for Chase. The resentment wasn't exactly subtle.]
I don't think it counts if you only got to experience it as a kid. I was normal by my world's standards until a similar age, too. My world doesn't consider alchemy a super power though, it's not something you spontaneously develop either.
[Ed's curious about the whole thing, but considering Chase's attitude he doesn't want to push any buttons. Obviously it was a sore subject.]
