[Beverly walks down this same street almost every day, on her way to and from work. From that coffeeshop on the corner to the weird little knick knack shop full of bits and bobs from across the multiverse, the sights have become very familiar to her. Which is maybe why this particular door showed up on this particular street. Or maybe it's all a coincidence. It's hard to say sometimes, in the Quarantine.

The door in question would not be a particularly remarkable one save for a unique symbol etched in the center of it. Even so, she easily might have missed it - hell, maybe she already has before today. But now that she's seen it, there's absolutely no chance she won't be investigating. The door opens easily and she lets out a surprised gasp when she sees what's inside.]

Good evening everyone! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Beverly Crusher - and I found something a bit... unexpected today. [She grins.] A good sort of unexpected, though. Something from my home world that I'd like to share with you all.

[Here she carefully balances her phone against the wall so that it more or less shows both her and the room she's in. It's not readily apparent what sort of room it is as there is nothing in it and no windows or doors, only black walls, floors, and ceiling criss-crossed with glowing yellow grid-lines.]

Now, I know it doesn't look like much but! [She dances over to the middle of the room. She's really excited you guys!!!] Computer! Play File Dixon Hill, The Big Goodbye.

[Immediately, the room around her changes into a street scene from 1930s San Francisco. A figure wearing a fedora bumps into her. "Sorry, ma'am!" he says as he tips her hat and continues on his way, though not without first giving her an odd look - she is after all dressed in odd clothing for the era.]

It's a holodeck! Or well... I suppose since we're not on a ship it ought to be called a holosuite instead, but in any case, it's a holographic projection system that creates a virtual reality. There are only a few scenarios loaded onto the computer right now, but I plan on making more - with ideas and suggestions from you! I want this to be a collaborative creative project that we can all have fun with! There'll be a link below the video for more information and feel free to contact me with any questions you have!

[She gives a little cheerful wave goodbye before reaching down to turn off the video stream.]

[She shoots him a satisfied grin, then stops just short of the holodeck doors. Embedded into the wall beside the entrance is a computer console, into which Beverly now enters a few manual commands. Normally, she'd use the verbal commands, but she wants this to be a surprise for Jim.

The computer chirps and the doors open up onto... the bridge of the Enterprise-D.]

[ Jim's expression opens into a wide grin, and he promptly steps through the door. He can recognize the bridge of a Fleet ship any day, no matter how different it looks from his own. ]

Wow. [ He lets out a laugh, walking along the consoles, then moving down to where the chair is. Correction: where the chairs are. That's new, too. ]

Is this your ship?

Yes. (She runs her hand over the armrest of the captain's chair with both fondness and longing. Seeing all of this is a comfort in some ways, yet in others it only sharpens her homesickness.) the Enterprise-D. Technically, it's part of a command training program, but.... (She laughs softly.) I've no need to run through that again!

[ He almost considers taking a seat, but then he realizes it'd just be wrong. Possibly disrespectful. Instead he moves to the helm controls, looking over the panels, somehow both strange and familiar at the same time. ]

Yes, evidently you don't. [ He chuckles. ] I assume the simulation only includes the bridge? [ He would rather enjoy seeing the rest of the ship. ]

For this simulation, yes. There is another that involves engineering but that data was evidently lost when this came through the portal.

That's too bad.

[ He looks around, arching his eyebrows. ] I mean, not that this isn't all amazing, but... I'd have loved for a chance to get to see the rest of your ship.

I'd love for you to see it too! And to see your Enterprise. We'll have to work on programming it.

I'd like that too. [ He smiles. ] I mean, this is nothing like my Enterprise. It looks so different. Mine's... well, whiter, for lack of a better word.

White, hmm? [Different then, not only from her Enterprise, but from the one she'd seen in history books.] How many live there?

Four hundred, give or take. Sometimes more, but rarely less. [ It's a big ship, after all. Almost like a small flying city at times, Jim thinks. ] How many on your ship?

About a thousand, though we are capable of holding almost twice that, in an emergency.

Must be huge. [ The bridge alone is about the same, but he is impressed by the numbers. ] We could probably carry a lot more people too, though thankfully we haven't had to put that to the test so far.

It is the largest class in the fleet - took some adjusting when I first arrived!

[ He smiles, endeared by her excitement. ] Had you served on another ship before?

A few, though when Wesley was younger I tried to take positions that were more sedentary - at research stations and the like.

What did you do when you joined the Enterprise crew? Did he go with you?

Of course - I wouldn't have requested it otherwise. But we were hardly the only family on board and besides, it was a great learning opportunity for him.

Huh. [ He purses his lips, nodding. ] We don't really have families on my crew. Or any other crew that I know of.

I have to say, I'm glad that's changed. I don't know if I would have stayed in Starfleet if I had to leave Wesley behind, especially not after everything he'd been through when Jack died.

Yeah, I can understand that. [ And no one would've blamed her for it, either. He smiles softly. ] On the one hand, I know there are people on my crew who miss their families dearly. Sulu comes to mind, for instance. But on the other, knowing the dangerous situations we've found ourselves in... well, given that option, I don't know if most of them would really want to have their families on board.

[She frowns slightly. Is that a criticism? She doesn't think so, but it pricks a little, if only perhaps because of some internalized guilt over the times where Wesley was indeed in danger because of her career. But...]

I can't blame them for that.

[ Not at all, really, far from it. Jim wouldn't be the kind to judge people on that kind of thing anyway, and he seriously doubts Beverly would make a decision like that without thinking it through. Or that Starfleet would authorize it if was too dangerous. Maybe the nature of their missions is just different, is all. Or maybe it's just a sign of how times change. ]

Can't blame you for your choice, either. I know many on my ship would do the same, given the chance.

[She sighs.]

I guess it doesn't matter either way, now. He's there and I'm here.

For now, maybe. You'll be back there one day, sooner or later.

I know. And I don't think time runs quite the same way so... we'll just have to see.
