Christmas is a holiday that's pretty important, back home.
In Germany, it's a family affair, usually. It wasn't celebrated much in my own household, but the city outside was always decorated, and there was usually a parade in the streets on more beautiful nights.

I've heard it's different for some people.

And that gifts have more meaning than others.

I'm curious to know the differences, as I still don't really understand it, much.

It works for both. With friends, you can play it off as a joke.

For people you hate, you can make fun of them for it and never let them forget it happened.
