video // @odo

[Odo’s a little unsure how to address the network, and as much as he tries to repress that hesitation, it’s still noticeable for those paying attention. The network was usually something he only observed, but this was a quicker way to gather information than asking individuals.

He starts off with what he thinks is a socially appropriate greeting.]

Good Morning.

I am looking for information regarding renting some space. Either something suitable for an office, or an open area without any furniture. I suppose that means I’ll have to contact some kind of landlord.

[His tone indicates he’s not exactly happy about this idea.]

If any of you could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

[He’s about to end the feed when he remembers something.]

...Thank you.

Might be a good thing to find out.

[ Cisco knows Odo isn't planning on staying here any longer than he needs to, and sure he doesn't need to eat and drink or whatever, but how could he have no idea how much money he makes, even? That's just so crazy, to Cisco. Every time he thinks he is beyond surprising by people's strange ways of life and customs and ideas, someone proves him wrong.

He sends the address, and then, joking (or is he) says with a laugh: ]

I'm not gonna regret this because you're looking for a place to build some great big bomb or something, am I?

[ If it were a place to live away from the communal housing, Cisco would totally get the desire for privacy. But someone who wants super private industrial space? Sketchy. And sure maybe that's just his paranoia talking, but, sometimes it's not wrong to be paranoid. ]

private

[ Cisco switches the video over to private, assuming Odo would prefer that, before he makes his response. ]

Alright, alright. I was only kidding. Well, mostly.

[ He should really leave it there. He shouldn't say any more... ]

I just thought maybe you were getting desperate to go back to your world and possibly planning something that could be dangerous. This place is my home, now. I'm a little overprotective of it.

Alright, I believe you.

[ And it's true. Well, mostly. Cisco is going to worry a little bit that Odo is up to something whether he wants to or not, but he at least feels somewhat reassured that it's probably not this particular thing. A few moments pass and he sends another message, adding: ]

For the record it's not like I was suspicious of you, Odo, in particular. If anybody had posted looking for a big industrial space with a lot of privacy I'd be worried. It's not a you thing, it's an assuming the worst thing.

[ At least he's aware of it? Doesn't make it any less of an unpleasant trait. But, well, there's no real changing it, at this point. When you've been through what he has, chronic distrust of people is just unavoidable. ]

Lemme know if the real estate guy gives you any trouble. You can tell him I referred you if you want.

[ Cisco sighs a little in relief - at least Odo understands, and isn't taking lasting offense. For all that he's a prickly, somewhat incomprehensible guy, he's never actually done anything to hurt Cisco. It's not all that fair, that he should have to justify himself to this random person, just because that person happened to be paranoid. ]

Better to assume the worst and find out it's not so bad rather than the other way 'round.

[ He's surprised that Odo doesn't just cut off the conversation and go about his day. But he listens, and as soon as Odo explains, it all makes sense. ]

Ooooh. Is that it? Well, you should definitely ask the guy about the empty place down near the Communal Housing. I thought about using it for my workshop, 'cause I was living there at first and it would've been convenient, but he told me there was some kind of nonsense with permits and safety codes and all kinds of legal mumbo jumbo that hadn't gotten sorted out yet, but basically it meant it couldn't be used as a place of business, and it's not the kind of place that could be converted into a house or anything, it's way too big and empty. He's probably dyin' to get it off his hands, if you tell him you're gonna use it for personal non-business reasons, I bet he'll sell it to you for peanuts.

[ See, Odo - sometimes being open means opportunities come by that you'd otherwise miss! ]

Plus, it hasn't got any windows. Just a skylight. So it's discreet and everything.

Yeah, really.

[ It's hard to tell, whether Odo is skeptical, or excited, or what is even going on with him. Guy was difficult as all hell to read. But Cisco waits patiently, and then considers his question. ]

Uh, I don't know. I mean, he wasn't looking to rent it, when I asked, but that was almost half a year ago, so... maybe something's changed?

[ He doesn't sound all that hopeful, however. The person in question wasn't really a landlord, and as far as Cisco knows, mostly just sells places outright. ]

Is that a deal-breaker?

[ Cisco is a bit surprised by that if, but he doesn't comment on it - at least not directly. ]

Yeah, I'm sure if that happens, you'll have enough time to make arrangements for it. There're probably systems in place, and if push comes to shove, I'll make sure it gets taken care of, okay?

[ They've already established that Cisco is not leaving, so as long as he's not dead, he can make that promise without reservation. He sends along the contact information and then offers: ]

If you need any help moving in, or cleaning the place up, or putting in a security system for your privacy, just hit me up, okay?

No, I'm not talking about booby traps, my name's not Kevin McCallister!

[ Odo of course is the last person who would likely get a Home Alone reference, but Cisco speaks the way he speaks and he's going to bring up pop culture regardless of whether anyone else gets it. It's something he does for him, at this point. ]

I was thinking, like, a motion-sensor that sends an alert to your phone if there's an intruder, or a temporary forcefield you can put up for an hour or two when you don't wanna be disturbed.

[ Cisco, not knowing about Odo's historical research, immediately makes an incorrect assumption, and asks, his voice rich with amusement: ]

Are booby traps the hot new thing all the kids are getting into, in your world, or something?
franciscoramon: (:D pure joy)

[personal profile] franciscoramon 2018-01-22 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
[ Cisco laughs; Odo's unintentional arrogance strikes him as being rather charming, when all is said and done. Could it be he meant that as a joke? Cisco's really not sure. Perhaps he'd been mistaken, thinking Odo was entirely humorless up until this point. Perhaps his sense of humor is just exceptionally dry and easy to miss. ]

I'll bet. I mean, I can't even imagine what kinds of criminal shit people would get up to at a space station like that. Probably plenty, since there's a lot of people passing through, right? Lotta shady deals and fugitives and whatever else?

[ Whereas he laughed easily before, Cisco tries to keep himself from laughing at Odo's mistake, now. Only he does a rather poor job of it, eyes sparkling with mirth as he says: ]

No, don't worry about it. He's not, uh. He's not here. Besides, he was using his booby traps for good, to stop burglars that had come in his house. Nothing wrong with that.

I'd love to hear some stories about the interesting cases, sometime. I mean, if you don't mind. My boyfriend's a detective, so he's kinda gotten me interested in all that crime-solving stuff.

[ A bit of an exaggeration - Cisco had gotten interested in crime-solving stuff from shitty TV when he was growing up, but he feels like Odo would scoff at that more readily than him saying it's because of Eddie.

He's still struggling to hold back his laughter, but it only shows in the brightness of his eyes and the fact that he's smiling as he says: ]

If that happens, I'll be sure to let you know. But I wouldn't worry about it too much.
