I don't suppose anyone managed to hoard some of that incense that helps you sleep? I swear, I haven't had a good night sleep like that in two years before I got here.

[A beat, because she didn't mean to admit it.]

It's also the first time I willingly used magic. Well, that and the candles at the party. Back home, magic isn't supposed to be real, and all of the instances of it have to do with demons and sacred geometry. I guess I guess my journalism major self always knew math was evil, but I never thought it would be so literal!

[There's some amusement in her voice at that, because she literally just came from so many math lectures. SO MANY.

But changing gears:]

But that's what magic is like in my world. What's it like yours? Also, I'm definitely serious about buying some of that incense if you have it.

[For a moment, Alex really doesn't know what to say, but then she just settles on a smile and adds:]

Sorry. I'm not normally like... tongue-tied around people. Far from it honestly. But you know.

[Alex makes a little gesture towards him that means an actual god and she smiles, deciding to go about this in the normal way. Well, normal for Alex anyway.]

Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?

Yeah, no, of course. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Is there like a proper form of address I should be using?

[dothelokimotion]

Loki will do. I don't care much for formal address these days.

[ Unless it's funny. ]

Okay, cool. Loki. I didn't know if I should call you like "Oh great Loki, high god of cool Lokiness" or something.

[It's clear she's teasing, or at the very least making a bad joke.]

So, god of mischief, would that mean that you do illusion types of magic?

[dothelokimotion]

Well. I wouldn't stop you.

That is correct. Illusions, conjurations. It varies.

Might be a little hard to roll off the tongue even for me!

[there's more than a little bit of a grin with that before she asks:]

Do you need any outside source for your magic? Potions or incantations or sacred geometry.

What is "sacred geometry".

[ Since when did maths become sacred? ]

It gives symbolic and sacred meanings to some geometric shapes and certain geometric proportions. And they use symbols in there too. In my world, it's how people can do magic. Well, if they can do magic, I guess.

That is . . . utterly baffling. But I suppose there is some truth to it.

[And Alex is going to lean forward interestedly and plop her chin down into her hand.]

Magic does follow its own laws. Whether it is the law of this reality or the next, it does need to fit within the constraints.

What most perceive as "reality" is rarely the case. Reality is larger than it seems and perception makes it smaller.

Yeah I'm definitely in the whole more things we know on earth and in heaven things when it comes to reality right now.

People in my world use it mostly to bilocate or summon demons.

So far, anyway.

[ Demon summoning. Never ends well. ]

You are expecting that to change.

I'm not sure. Yes and no, I suppose. It's more like I'm expecting to find out more that it does.

[dothelokimotion]

Summoning is not a fine art, to my recollection. Rules can be bent, but they usually have drastic consequences. I generally do not spend my time on it for it yields too little and the powers of demons don't quite match up to mine.

What are the demons like in your world?

[ Loki shakes his head. ]

We have none. They reside on more inhospitable worlds.

[ Like Surtur's realm. ]

I see. In my world, they're kind of like these overly tall shadow things with arms that go down to the ground.

[There's a little bit of tightness in her voice, along with a forced lightness, because fucking demons.]

Hmm. A rather plain design.

I guess it's not everyone's aesthetic.
