[ The camera catches a glimpse of Jim's face in his Perimeter Guard uniform, but only for the flicker of a second before there's a bump of some sort and the device is knocked down. Jim's surprised expression is the last thing to show before the only view for a few seconds is the ceiling. His voice can be heard from off camera. ]
John! Bad boy, bad.
[ There's a snout next, sniffing at the screen, then a tongue... then finally Jim reaches his phone and picks it up from the ground. He's grinning a little and shaking his head as he props it up on the table again and pulls away, dragging his new friend along with him so he's kept away from his device. ]
Sorry. That was... anyway. Captain James Kirk here, and this is John, the latest member of the aerial unit. [ He just wandered in one day and now Jim's keeping him, shut up. ] So— due to the latest rains and the most recent flooding near the river, a lot of people have found themselves temporarily displaced. I'm one of those people, but luckily me and my buddy here have a place to crash at the Perimeter Guard. We have plenty of beds and mattresses available here, for what it's worth, so anyone who finds themselves momentarily homeless, you'll be more than welcome here.
There should be other places we could use to offer people some shelter. The community centers come to mind, for instance. Gathering a few supplies would help though, so anyone willing to help and donate a few things, that would be great.
Additionally, I'll be making rounds on the shuttle, so anyone who needs a hand or absolutely must get somewhere out of bounds due to the flood, let me know.
And that's it! [ He smiles a little, nodding. ] Remember to keep safe. And if you don't need to be anywhere near it, stay away from the river. At least until the rain lets up and we manage to figure out where all this water's coming from.
(( ooc: this post is open to action for the following options: around the perimeter guard barracks, getting some rest, working, or helping other misplaced people out; near the river, aiding anyone in trouble and/or possibly fighting any of the monsters; a little all over the place on his shuttle, ready to jump in and get anyone out of a tough spot. ))

[ His smirk holds a tease, flashed over the cup of bitter tea he stirs atop crossed legs. Hux snorts softly. ]
I would have liked to work on improving the wall. Laserfield grids could have done so much to stop the beasts entering through the floods, albeit not the water itself.
no subject
[ He shoots back with a wide grin, tipping his head up a little. He'll never not want to keep people safe, though. His own sense of self-preservation ends where everyone else's safety begins, no matter who they are. ]
There's still a lot to work on and improve on the walls— both around the Quarantine and the Abandoned City. It'll take a lot of repairing first, granted, but once the flood is over, I don't see why you can't do that.
no subject
He briefly imagines tossing Jim into the floodwaters first-hand. ]
Yes, well ... As to that, I have an alarmingly low stockpile of suppliers and there are people within the Guard, from my home-universe, who would find it difficult to trust me. I feel certain they would sabotage any progress I made. [ Shaking his head. ] I would much prefer to get down to work and stay in this workshop indefinitely, believe me.
no subject
Really? Well, that's unfortunate. [ He mulls it over for a bit. ] I could probably get you a few things, should you ever need anything specific. Sounds kind of sad to just lock yourself up in here all day every day, though. Even outside of work, there's plenty of fun stuff to do around the Quarantine.

[ Somehow impressed by Jim's determination to lend aid (which is such a dumb thing to do without receiving any sort of favour in return, kriffing hell ... what a bleeding heart), he shakes his head and looks down at his tea. ]
You're out there as often as possible when you're not power-swimming to rescue others from the floods, then? [ What do they call it, ] "Painting the town red"?
no subject
Well, I wouldn't put it like that. I'm not exactly twenty anymore. [ His lips twitch a little, and he takes a quick bite from his toast. ] But yeah, I like to go out, have fun. Go for a movie every so often, or drinks. Riding on my bike. Among other things. Do you do things for fun, or is it all just "work work work" with you?
no subject
I ... [ Of course Jim has a full and enriching life, he's a powerhouse of lovable quirks and goodness and purity of kriffing heart. Horrid. ] I went to a pet store.
[ So why does Hux struggle so hard to find something to offer up in return? He senses he may not have achieved that with his selection. ]
There are no animals allowed on the ships, of course, it's been a while since I saw any. [ Millicent being the exception because no one knows about her. ] They have quite the number of felines, I suspect with the heavy rainfall the shelters are full too.
no subject
Actually Jim's sort of endeared when Hux brings up a pet store. That's so... 'unexpected' is the best word he can think of. He fights the urge to smile wider at Hux, and just settles with a faint nod instead. ]
We don't really have pets on board either. [ It's not outright forbidden, but it was just too complicated. Jim sure wouldn't have risked an animal's safety like that. ] So— you like cats. You did strike me as a cat person. Thinking of adopting one?
no subject
[ Train another one, he almost said. Millicent is well-trained, docile, and quiet, the perfect companion. He gets the feeling a rowdy kitten wouldn't have the same effect. ]
What do you mean, 'a cat person'?
no subject
[ Plus, Hux could always adopt one that's already all grown up and well-trained. Not nearly as many headaches, that's for sure. ]
Oh. That's just something people say where I'm from. Cats and dogs are the most common pets back on Earth, so there's this... saying, I guess. That you're either a cat person or a dog person. The implication being that cat people are more indoors-y, introverted, the kind to enjoy an afternoon curled up on the couch reading or watching movies, and dog people like the outdoors, adventures, exercising and are more extroverted.
A poor stereotype, I guess. Besides, nothing's to stop someone from liking or adopting both.
no subject
[ Tooling with Jim? Never. ]
no subject
Well, I am a dog person. But I also like cats, for the record.
no subject
[ Jim's laugh is horrendous, the worst sound in the recorded history of the galaxy. The only thing worse is his smile.
Armitage sincerely hopes his hot ears aren't too pink. ]
no subject
Mm, that would very much depend on what kind of scratching we're talking about.
[ Grinning unapologetically, he winks at Hux. He's enjoying the effect he's having on him a little too much, admittedly. ]
no subject
Do you travel alone or do you keep any family onboard your ship? The Enterprise, that is, when you're there.
no subject
My crew is my family. [ He states simply, then goes on to add. ] I just have my mother. She's a Starfleet officer too, but she has her own assignments, usually on Earth or some colony on another planet. She's never been on board the Enterprise.
What about you?
no subject
Every answer he has for Jim is dismally lacking in some way. ]
I have no connections like that, no.
[ He must really be dopey if he can't stop himself asking questions that can so easily be turned around on himself. Idiot, Armitage. Pull yourself together. ]
I would have thought you were married.
no subject
Jim's proud of that. Proud of knowing that his ship and his crew are the paragon of what Starfleet is meant to be, what it represents. ]
Me? [ He raises both eyebrows, honestly surprised that Hux would even think that. ] No. Generally speaking, that's not... Captains don't get married. Kinda hard juggling both... I think.
no subject
[ It's been years since Hux bothered fashioning a compliment. You can care about people as well as your job. That's his point.
MOVING ON, ]
Some of my captains are attached. I believe some spouses opt to stay aboard with them and are allowed if they own similarly useful talents as officers. If they perform their duties, I have no protest.
no subject
Same thing where I'm from. My parents were part of the same crew, for instance. Civilians can't stay aboard starships, though. Starfleet's adamant about that.
[ He smiles a little and shrugs. ] But it's irrelevant in my case. Marriage never crossed my mind back home, not once.
no subject
[ Oops, almost made himself smile at his own joke!! ]
no subject
I don't think anyone has ever accused me of any level of innocence. Can't even tell if that's a compliment or not.
[ But then Hux also called him pleasant, so he's definitely going with 'yes'. ]
no subject
[ Stirring his tea, he glances away to the workshop through the door and then back again. His voice softens a little, quieter as he strives to sound sincere. Which he is when he says, ]
It's good to see you. I ... don't speak to many people. Perhaps I should try to rectify that if more of them are like you.
no subject
Well, I can't tell you you'll meet anyone else quite like me, but there's no harm in going out there and giving it a shot. [ Maybe just a tiny bit cocky there. All in good fun, of course. ] It's good to see you too.
no subject
[ It's a better reply than anything else trying to buffet its way out of his chest. He has to be calm and collected, no stock put in such kind words because sooner or later Hux will regret it. ]
I would dearly love to get my hands on some tarine tea, it's a little more bitter but very filling.
