[ The camera catches a glimpse of Jim's face in his Perimeter Guard uniform, but only for the flicker of a second before there's a bump of some sort and the device is knocked down. Jim's surprised expression is the last thing to show before the only view for a few seconds is the ceiling. His voice can be heard from off camera. ]

John! Bad boy, bad.

[ There's a snout next, sniffing at the screen, then a tongue... then finally Jim reaches his phone and picks it up from the ground. He's grinning a little and shaking his head as he props it up on the table again and pulls away, dragging his new friend along with him so he's kept away from his device. ]

Sorry. That was... anyway. Captain James Kirk here, and this is John, the latest member of the aerial unit. [ He just wandered in one day and now Jim's keeping him, shut up. ] So— due to the latest rains and the most recent flooding near the river, a lot of people have found themselves temporarily displaced. I'm one of those people, but luckily me and my buddy here have a place to crash at the Perimeter Guard. We have plenty of beds and mattresses available here, for what it's worth, so anyone who finds themselves momentarily homeless, you'll be more than welcome here.

There should be other places we could use to offer people some shelter. The community centers come to mind, for instance. Gathering a few supplies would help though, so anyone willing to help and donate a few things, that would be great.

Additionally, I'll be making rounds on the shuttle, so anyone who needs a hand or absolutely must get somewhere out of bounds due to the flood, let me know.

And that's it! [ He smiles a little, nodding. ] Remember to keep safe. And if you don't need to be anywhere near it, stay away from the river. At least until the rain lets up and we manage to figure out where all this water's coming from.

I don't think people live in that kind of uncertainty, even when life is unpredictable.

[ Nobody goes around thinking "oh yeah I might get turned off". ]

That would depend on the person. Generally speaking, it's true, we don't tend to think or focus much on our own mortality, but some people have a more difficult time with that than others.

[ Dorian getting turned off sounds very much like dying (or rather, being killed), so Jim's absolutely drawing that parallel. ]

I'm sorry that you have to live with that fear back home, but for what it's worth, it's not something you have to worry about here.

[ Dorian smiles. ]

I don't. Though that's strange too.

[winscenario]

Not worrying about dying?

[ Jim chuckles. ]

Your world's weird. Creating something as amazing as you only to think about ever shutting it down... can't really wrap my head around that, honestly.

[sentiences]

Really?

[ His eyes twinkle. ]

Must be nice to live without bureaucracy.

[winscenario]

Oh, we have bureaucracy. Just not about killing off sentient beings.

Sorry, "shutting down". [ Whatever they call it to feel better about themselves. And yes, he does the air quotes. ]

[sentiences]

[ Dorian merely smiles. ]

I'm sure there are other decisions that have been made that are uncomfortable. They just see it differently.

[winscenario]

Well, I see it differently. Any world would be a poorer place by losing someone like you.

[sentiences]

[ It is still . . . unusual to hear. At least so openly. Dorian doesn't harbor illusions — he's too perceptive for that, too straight-laced in a way. But humans always surprise him. ]

I'm not lost. I came back at the right time. And I'll change it.

[winscenario]

You'll change it? What, the world?

[ It's a nice thought, though. Jim has no doubt that he could, if he wanted to. He could at least change some people, he can easily imagine that. ]

[sentiences]

At least the way the world sees me.

[winscenario]

[ Jim smiles. How cute. ]

That's a very good goal to have.

[sentiences]

I think it's the only one I have.

[winscenario]

Really? Well then, you need to set more goals for yourself.

[sentiences]

I think my one goal is big enough.

[ He doubts he can handle multiple goals anyway. ]

[winscenario]

Simple guy, aren't you.

[ He doesn't mean it in a bad way at all, for the record. ]

[sentiences]

I find simple to be complex enough in my mind.

[ And Dorian is still adapting to certain complexities. It's a learning curve. ]

[winscenario]

A matter of perspective. Fair enough.

[ And Dorian's not wrong, even the things that are simplest to some could be very complicated to others. ]

[sentiences]

I enjoy all perspectives. When I can.

[ He loves them, lets them wash over him. Dorian has a lot to learn. ]

[winscenario]

That's good, builds empathy.

[ To understand all sides, even those that wouldn't be considered right by most people. ]

[sentiences]

[ Dorian's lips ticks upwards. ]

Really? I hadn't noticed.

[winscenario]

[ His eyes narrow at the camera. ]

You could do with a little less snark, you know. Is that part of your programming, or just something you learned?

[ Just kidding though, Jim loves it. ]

[sentiences]

[ Dorian schools his expression to look totally innocent. ]

I wouldn't know.

[winscenario]

Yeah, I'm sure you wouldn't.

[ He's not biting that innocent act, mister. ]

[sentiences]

As I said. I'm still learning.
