[ The camera catches a glimpse of Jim's face in his Perimeter Guard uniform, but only for the flicker of a second before there's a bump of some sort and the device is knocked down. Jim's surprised expression is the last thing to show before the only view for a few seconds is the ceiling. His voice can be heard from off camera. ]
John! Bad boy, bad.
[ There's a snout next, sniffing at the screen, then a tongue... then finally Jim reaches his phone and picks it up from the ground. He's grinning a little and shaking his head as he props it up on the table again and pulls away, dragging his new friend along with him so he's kept away from his device. ]
Sorry. That was... anyway. Captain James Kirk here, and this is John, the latest member of the aerial unit. [ He just wandered in one day and now Jim's keeping him, shut up. ] So— due to the latest rains and the most recent flooding near the river, a lot of people have found themselves temporarily displaced. I'm one of those people, but luckily me and my buddy here have a place to crash at the Perimeter Guard. We have plenty of beds and mattresses available here, for what it's worth, so anyone who finds themselves momentarily homeless, you'll be more than welcome here.
There should be other places we could use to offer people some shelter. The community centers come to mind, for instance. Gathering a few supplies would help though, so anyone willing to help and donate a few things, that would be great.
Additionally, I'll be making rounds on the shuttle, so anyone who needs a hand or absolutely must get somewhere out of bounds due to the flood, let me know.
And that's it! [ He smiles a little, nodding. ] Remember to keep safe. And if you don't need to be anywhere near it, stay away from the river. At least until the rain lets up and we manage to figure out where all this water's coming from.
(( ooc: this post is open to action for the following options: around the perimeter guard barracks, getting some rest, working, or helping other misplaced people out; near the river, aiding anyone in trouble and/or possibly fighting any of the monsters; a little all over the place on his shuttle, ready to jump in and get anyone out of a tough spot. ))

Tonight was looking particularly harsh, with the rain gradually falling heavier until his clothes were all soaked through. There was no soul in sight either. A good thing— it meant people were being careful, and not risking their safety for whatever reason. Satisfied that he'd done all he could for the night, he whistled for John to follow him as he turned towards the guard.
But the dog didn't obey. Jim frowned, confused at first, and then concerned, watching as John faced away from him, ears spiked in the air, tail still. Suddenly and without warning, he barked once and ran off at an incredible speed, and Jim struggled to catch up for those first few seconds. ]
John! Stay! [ The dog clearly wasn't listening to him, though. Soon enough, Jim realized why. As the screaming reached his ears, his concern shifted from his dog to whoever was in trouble, and that concern only increased tenfold when he realized who it was. ]
Lucy! [ Jim could feel something practically grip at his insides when he saw the huge monster right behind her. He picked up his pace considerably, sprinting right past John and Lucy, and straight towards the creature. ] Go hide!!
[ The dog had planted himself between Lucy and the source of danger in the meantime, trying to get her to run to safety instead. ]

Run. Just keep running. Find shelter, find a place to hide. Keep running, don't look back.
Those thoughts kept going through her mind while fleeting thoughts of wanting to cry and hating she didn't have anything on her to use as a weapon. Then again, she didn't take any lessons on sword play, so having a weapon on her wouldn't have done her any good. She heard her name cut through the sound of the rain and her footsteps pounding on the floor. Who was there? Victor?
Something rushed past her, causing her to skid to a stop. At first she thought it was a wolf, trying to eat her, but it was...a dog? There's some relief, but there's only a split second of it.]
JIM!!
[He's there. He heard her and he was going to fight the monster?! There was another roar, the creature coming closer. She doesn't have time to argue even though she wants him to hide with her. The dog prevents her from going to Jim, so she has to do what he says. She runs away, heading further up with the dog running behind her.
She does her best not to flinch hearing trees and branches break from beneath the heavy stomps of the monster heading towards Jim. It opens it's mouth to show off it's razor sharp teeth and roars again before lounging at the adult. Lucy was silently praying Jim would be okay as she ducked behind a mossy boulder.]

John's an exceptionally smart dog, so Jim's mind is at ease knowing he'll find a safe corner for Lucy to hide in, and that he'll do anything he has to keep her safe. It means Jim can focus solely on the creature, and what he can do to slow it down and hurt it just enough to send it back into the water.
The phaser, unsurprisingly, doesn't do much damage, but Jim aims and shoots at it repeatedly anyway, at the very least getting its attention. As it charges towards him, he runs fast down the street and towards the river, looking over his shoulder every once in a while.
The creature makes a lunging movement suddenly, and Jim sees it just in time, leaping to the side and throwing himself to the ground, rolling sideways and narrowly avoiding the direct hit. They're too close now, though, so he unsheathes the dagger tied to his thigh once he's back on his feet, standing his ground as the creature charges at him again. Definitely looking angrier now.
He just hopes Lucy can't see this from where she's hiding. ]

What could she do? Nothing. Logically, she couldn't do anything. She only had her school bag that had textbooks and her notebook. It wasn't like she could light anything on fire, and even if she could, it would be drowned out by the rain. Could she call for help? Maybe...maybe she could! She checked her pocket for her phone, but it was dead.
She let a more adult curse word leave her lips as she was forced to wait, peaking out from the boulder to see if the cost was clear, but it wasn't.
The creature and Jim were still fighting, farther away now, but she could still make out their figures. She looked to the dog, whispering for him to go to Jim, to help him. She can stay behind, she wouldn't move, but someone should do something for Jim!]

He was a good dog, and a smart dog. But it was obvious that leaving Jim to his own devices was making him more nervous and stressed. Lucy trying to urge him to go was the only push needed for him to take off to where the sounds of the fighting were coming from.
Jim, in the meantime, was currently rolling around the floor, narrowly avoiding the persistent attacks of the beast. He'd been bumped against harshly and likely would sport a bruise on his shoulder, but he could live with that. His attention shifted when he heard John barking, though, heart tightening in his chest when he saw the dog sprinting towards the beast.
The creature seemed to take some interest in John, too— or maybe it just wanted to get him out of the way quickly. Point was, it was going to hurt John, or worse. The smaller animal didn't stand a chance. Before Jim could think twice of it, he threw himself between the two animals, feeling the brunt of the impact. He felt a sharp pain on his shoulder and cried out, only realizing when he looked down that the monster had its teeth sunk into Jim's shoulder and arm. ]
