[ The video starts with one of Jim's usual smiles. For those who recognize the location, he's sitting at his desk at the Perimeter Guard. ]

So, after some rocky couple of months, it looks like we're settling in for a quieter month. I don't know about you, but I'm definitely not complaining. Everyone should take the opportunity to relax a little and have some fun, but please be careful. Keep in mind that things can stop being peaceful and safe pretty fast.

Building on that thought, I'd like to reinforce we are always accepting new members at the Perimeter Guard. Can't have too many of us. Also, if you can pilot ships, shuttles or airplanes, I'm always looking for more members for the aerial unit, more specifically.

If anyone's curiosity is piqued, feel free to drop by and ask for Captain James T. Kirk. I'll be happy to show you around.

[ And he leans in as though he's turning off the camera...

[A few more adjustments, and they're off. It's not quite like handling a shuttle in space-- there's a lot more to keep track of in atmosphere-- but she keeps the takeoff smooth as she points them out over the forest onto her proposed route.]

[The way he says that is a bit wry. It sounds like he's not his own person, and he has yet to get used to that feeling. Then again, it's not so bad to know he's not alone.]

All right. Sounds like a good place to start. If you think you can get someone like me to learn how to operate that kind of machine. It always looks complicated.

[ He smiles a bit apologetically. He can't say he knows exactly how Steve feels, but he can easily imagine. Especially knowing there is at least one very real version of him out there, in another universe. ]

Anyone can learn, provided they want to. And you seem like a smart, resourceful guy to me. You'll figure it out. [ Besides, it looks complicated, but it really isn't that difficult. Just takes some getting used to, is all. ] I have a mission beyond the wall in a few days, but we can set something up once I'm back in the city. That work for you?

You're not alone there. Most people here haven't.

[ Some are fascinated, some are skeptical. Most don't seem to even believe there's such a thing, not in any universe. As though Starfleet or the Federation are some kind of unattainable utopia. Jim doesn't think so; he believes in it, but it's still flawed, it can still improve. But that's true for just about anything and anyone, he thinks.

He seems fairly relaxed as she takes them off the ground, pulling a couple screens up in front of him and keeping an eye on the path and the readings they get. He can tell she's completely at ease with the controls, so he doesn't hover, simply watching her every so often and not interrupting. He doesn't plan on stepping in unless absolutely necessary. ]

Research for research's sake, exploration for the same, is simple when considered in the abstract. Reality, in my experience, tends to contaminate it.

[She's certain that her views are colored by the 'exploration' she facilitated for the Radch for so long. By her hatred of both sides of that debate among the Radch's leadership. It nevertheless seems idealistic to her.

She stays quiet for much of the first part of the flight, allowing herself to focus on the controls. It's only when they're nearing the halfway point in the journey that she speaks up again.]

What was your ship like?

[ Steve returns the smile, almost embarrassed that he let his discomfort show. It's no one else's fault that he's got issues with sharing his identity. And it isn't like either of them could control that anyway. ]

Don't be. I didn't mean to say it like that.

[ Sometimes honesty really doesn't help him. ]

That would be fine. I look forward to it.

[ He pauses, taking a moment to change the setting of his message. ]

Is there a special reason you're hiding the other question?

The Rebellion collected rations, many of which could be quickly heated, but I learned to cook all kinds of things as a child. [when rations were more like hey what can you steal from the streets!] It has been a long time, but there is plenty of food to cook here. You have no excuse now.

[he sighs a little, but it's more of a pleased sound.] Good.

It's fine. It's already weird enough just knowing that other versions of you exist out there— can't even imagine what it's like to have one around all the time.

[ Maybe it bothered Spock? Or maybe not. The Ambassador never did stick around for long, at least. But here? It's impossible to avoid each other, when they're both sort of stuck inside the Quarantine for the most part.

He lifts an eyebrow at the setting change, lips quirking at the question. ]

Yes. I want to surprise my boyfriend. But it's not much of a surprise if he realizes I'm asking for dance lessons. He'd put two and two together pretty quickly.

In most everyone's experience, it seems.

[ He can't really get her to believe him. Skepticism is something he's used to by now, and yeah, he realizes it sounds a little too idealistic, too... pure, for lack of a better word. Of course that the Federation wants and needs knowledge in order to advance technologically, but it's not the only reason why they go out there, exploring the galaxy. ]

Big, [ He says with a small smile. ] Really... huge. Could carry a crew of about four hundred people, give or take. The most advanced Federation ship at the time of its construction, and the flagship of the fleet. Definitely nothing like this shuttle.

[ Nodding at her, ] You had a ship, back home?

Hey, I wasn't trying to find an excuse. I'm learning. It's just hard when you've never been anywhere near a kitchen for most of your life.

[ But yeah, he wants to learn now. He just... still sucks at it. His problem was he wanted to jump straight into full meals, though. He's learned that it's best to start small for now. He can cook an egg in different ways, boil pasta, and he can manage more basic stir frying mixes. Small victories. ]

Sometimes a kitchen is just a boiling pot of water over a fire. I know how to make a lot of stews.

[he is mostly teasing jim, because it's not like inability to cook is a sign of anything. some people live off rations, some live off scraps, some are wealthy enough to have people cook for them, which is the Worst clearly.]

They are pretty easy, if you want to learn them too.

[Breq listens to the description, as she stares at the controls. Jim sounds like a Captain, all right. Proud of his ship-- and rightfully so, if it was the flagship. Proud of the specs. If she were to take a guess, proud of the crew as well.]

What was the ship called?

[His next question makes her throat close up. She has to take a steadying breath before she answers.'Had' isn't the right word, but...]

Once. Justice of Toren.

I thought that was for decoration!

[Lies, she knew it was there beyond that, but she didn't know if someone was learning to play or it was bought on a whim. Jim...kind of gives off the 'impulsive buyer' kind of vibe.]

...I almost didn't. I was very tempted to ignore you and do what I thought was best, but...I didn't want to disappoint Papa...or you. [She is a goody-two shoes, her parents, and Victor, raised her well. Hopefully it'll carry through when she's a teen.]

But I had every reason to worry about you--you're family, and I didn't want to lose someone else that I love.

USS Enterprise. Or just Enterprise, for short.

[ He's proud, alright. Even now that the first generation of his ship lies dead in Altamid, he's still proud, as he will be of the Enterprise-A once it's finished. His crew won't cease to perform admirably as always, so he knows he'll never have a single reason not to be proud of them, too.

He glances at Breq, watching her for a brief while. ] What kind of ship was it?

[ Well, a replicator is a lot like rations, really. Granted, rations that he can shape into anything he wants, flavor and all, but the basic principle is the same. Point is, he's never needed to cook a thing in his life. Not because he's wealthy or anything (that's not even a thing where he comes from anymore), but simply because replicators have become very common just about anywhere. Even in the middle of nowhere, Iowa. ]

Are you offering to teach me? [ Apparently he'll take anything that Cassian's willing to teach him. ]

Okay, that settles it. I'll start playing you some songs too.

[ He's done it for Victor a couple times, so why not? He should just make it into a Thing. John likes to hear him play too, and he's not half-bad either. There's no downside. ]

You wouldn't disappoint me, Lucy. But I am glad you did what I asked you to, even though I know you didn't like it. Believe me, doing that... you really did help a lot. [ Because it was one less thing he had to worry about, one less thing he had to fear while he took care of Victor. Didn't mean a thing in the end, because she got sick anyway, but at least by then he knew that people would eventually wake up again. Granted, he only started feeling a shred of relief when Victor himself woke up, but still. ]

You won't lose me, Lucy. I promise, as long as I can control it, I'll be here. And I'm stubborn as hell, so— it's really hard to get me to do anything I don't want to. [ He tries to coax her to smile by offering a small smile of his own. ]

All of the Justices were troop carriers. [Her hands tense and relax on the controls. Jim can probably already guess that her world is less idyllic than his, spelling it out won't change it much.]

Sixteen decks, though not all were in use. Each deck had a name. I was a piece of the Esk decade.

If you want to. [She shrugs her shoulders a little, trying not to force him to do anything he didn't want to do.

Lucy listened to Jim, trying to take his words to heart. He wouldn't leave, not if he had anything to say about it. He wouldn't just...disappear without telling her good bye.

She looks up at him, seeing the slight smile and tries to smile a little....and he was very stubborn, like when he wouldn't take no for an answer when they first met.]

...You need to make it a pinky promise, that's the only type of promise I'll accept.

Well met, Jim Kirk. [He takes the hand, unable to shake the vague feeling he's heard that name before. Hm.]

I meant to ask- have you been here long?

It's... Well, it's different. I guess I don't mind that much. It's just that I got used to the idea that there wouldn't be more of me.

[Or that they'd turn out to be dangerous. It's mostly bad luck on his part that affects his perception. He's learning to change his view of himself and be more open to others. Which brings him here talking to Jim.]

Is there a special reason, or do you just want to take him out somewhere?

[He should probably take notes.]

I wouldn't suggest it if I didn't. [ One thing Lucy should know by now is that Jim doesn't do anything he doesn't want to.

His smile widens at her answer. Good. She doesn't sound as sad now, or upset with him. It's a relief, honestly. That time when Victor was sick, and then when they both were at the hospital, Jim honestly worried that she might be mad enough at him that it'd take time for her to forgive him for being so... well, strict with her.

(He's kind of new at this parenting thing, okay. But he's trying.) ]

Alright. Then let's make it a pinky promise tonight, when we're home. Sounds good?

[ The description alone is enough for him to recognize how different both their worlds are. Granted, her reaction to what Starfleet is and how it operates did paint a similar picture, so it's not much of a surprise to him. Even in his own galaxy, not every government and fleet are like his own; some races are still at war, whole empires still hellbent on conquering others, wasting away their resources on war and conflict. It's nothing new to him. ]

Must've been an impressive vessel. [ He can recognize that much. The Vengeance was an impressive ship too, even though it was designed for war. ]

How are you adapting, here? It sounds like it's very different from your reality.
