What is the different between a boyfriend and a boy friend? Are there various levels of friendship that are distinguished by sex? The online literature on this subject is perplexing in nature. How does one earn these titles?

Is it? Honestly, it is very murky. Why is the space so important?

The space denotes the separation between romantic involvement and pure platonic feeling. At least, that's how I always understood it.

Generally, you're in romantic love with the "boyfriend" and have no romantic interest in the friend who happens to be a boy.

It is no slight to me. He simply preferred boyfriend and I did not grasp why.

"Lover" could mean a greater level of commitment involved. There's also "significant other."

I fail to see the point of having a romantic relationship if you are not fully committed.

I agree. But some are meant to be permanent. Like a marriage. Others are brief. And some... never truly exist beyond whatever feelings you might have for the other person.

Maybe you should ask the person you're involved with how your relationship should be defined.

I am not involved. He merely spoke of an involvement he had with another.

Hm... So this is about someone else being in a relationship. Maybe it's better to let them define it as they see fit. If it's romantic, then just accept it as that?

Sometimes, things don't need labels.
