[ The best way to deal with crippling revelations is to make inane posts. Well. Maybe not so inane since he is genuinely lost. ]
What is the different between a boyfriend and a boy friend? Are there various levels of friendship that are distinguished by sex? The online literature on this subject is perplexing in nature. How does one earn these titles?

A boyfriend is a lover, while a boy friend is a boy who is a friend, without any romantic implications. The same applies to girlfriend/girl friend. Though some Earth women do refer to their girl friends as girlfriends. That is where it gets truly confusing.

You are a fountain of true knowledge, sister.
So a girl who is a friend can be both? And yet there is no way to distinguish the romantic context?
no subject
[ AKA they were being blatant with the PDA. ]
I think the concept of same-sex romantic affection still baffles them, largely.

Like most titles, it's more at the discretion of the other person to decide when they consider you a boyfriend. It's a personal expression of how they feel about you. It doesn't have to involve sex at all.
[ private ]
But talking to his other self was . . . odd. Another oddity among a pile of events Loki was trying to decode. ]
Then it is a formal title only when both parties have agreed on it?

[Would it be weird to guess that Loki met someone? Probably. Steve doesn't think the question necessarily implies that he is asking out of an interest in using the term, but now that he's looking at it, he doesn't know Loki's personal life. Maybe there's a nice friend Loki actually opened up to. Best not to assume.]
It's a level of commitment. You can have a lover that isn't a boyfriend and have a boyfriend you love but don't have sex with. And you can have a friend that is just a friend that happens to be a boy. You don't have to call them any of those.

The best way to put it is that a boy friend is your ally through thick and thin and a boyfriend is someone you'd want to be a better person for.

video [ENCRYPTED] : un: stark.naked
more amused though since he stalked the whole exchange between you and your other self.
don't worry, he isn't going to try to explain the difference to you. someone else with better expertise can tell you.]
I have to ask, is that a legitimate question or are you trying to give the other you a small heart attack? I mean I have to say, if it is the latter I think you might almost deserve a high five.

I am curious and mortals do tie themselves in knots over such matters. My other self's frustration was merely an added bonus.
[ A confusing bonus, though. He'll have to think about what it means. ]
