[ Jim's face greets the network, blue eyes alight with excitement and a big, happy smile on his face. He's dressed all proper in a flight suit, hair with that annoyingly perfect curl over his forehead, and behind him a glimpse of the front of the shuttle he's been working on can be seen. ]

Good morning, everyone! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Captain James T. Kirk, and for the six months I've been in the Quarantine, I've been a member of the Perimeter Guard as a surveyor. A couple of months ago, I took a small team to the waterfalls as we tracked down a mystery signal, and found an abandoned vessel there, buried in a cave. We brought it back with us, but it was severely damaged and it took a lot of work and sleepless hours to get it back into shape. However, it wasn't wasted time. I'd like to present to you all— [ He stands up and moves behind his device, so the camera focuses fully on the shuttle. ] the PGS Intrepid! [ ta-daaah ] She's good as new and fully functional now, and I'm excited to say she's ready to go well beyond the walls and all around the whole moon.

[ He comes into the view of the camera again, retaking his seat in front of it. ]

The shuttle is an invaluable asset of the Quarantine, and with her restoration, a new branch of the Perimeter Guard has been established: aerial survey and exploration. So far it's only Poe Dameron and myself, but I'd love to see more skilled pilots and explorers joining us.

Likewise, if you'd like to pilot the shuttle and have the skills to do so, but don't want to commit to that specific branch of the guard, there will also be flight permits available to any skilled pilots who might want to use the shuttle for quick trips and various missions.

On both these circumstances, there should be a small flight test to assess your skills.

Now, if you only have minimal or no knowledge whatsoever, but you're interested in learning, we'll also be offering piloting lessons, ranging from basic to more advanced depending on your current skill.

I never understood that. There's so much to explore right here on the ground, why look to the stars?

[ literally has not understood this since she was a teenager. ]

Are you kidding? Not that I don't like Earth and its wonders, but it gets old and boring after a while, being stuck with your feet on the ground. Space is amazing. Not just the sight of the stars and the nebulae, but the infinite possibility of new worlds, new people, new cultures... To get to go where no one's gone before. [ Cue credit music playing in the background. ]

I'm not sure I can properly explain it to you, if you really don't understand. It's just... a very unique kind of freedom, a whole new universe of possibilities that can open up for anyone going up there.

I suppose with just the one planet it could be boring. [ lmao earth u suck, but she doesn't seem to believe that fully. even with space flight easy and common she didn't understand seeking out new planets only to hop to the next one without fully exploring the first. ]

I guess it doesn't feel like a special freedom if that is just... reality. [ even on the run she was never tied down until she was in prison. she used to like the jump to hyperspace when she was small, now it is only a means of escape. ]

[winscenario]

Yeah, even more so considering where I was from, trust me. Iowa's nothing but wide open corn fields and plains of grass or dirt— depends on the time of the year. [ Snow a few times too, etcetera. Jim's not a fan, evidently. So first chance he got to leave it behind, that's exactly what he did. ]

Of course it's special. Things don't stop being special just because they become reality, rather than a hope or a dream. I mean, they might not be special to you, which is perfectly valid. But they might be special to other people.

[realists]

[ jyn will probably never appreciate or enjoy flight, not really, but she nods in deference to kirk. he makes a valid point, jyn isn't going to police what people like just because she doesn't get it. ]

Iowa? [ also ??? corn ??? ]

[ She doesn't know what she's missing, really. Then again there are plenty of people out there with their own passions that Jim would find boring and uninteresting, so he can't say much. To each their own, he supposes. ]

Well— Iowa's one of the several states that make up the country of the United States of America, back on Earth. It's where I'm from. Grew up on this small town called Riverside. Mostly farmers and shipbuilders and a lot of Starfleet cadets and officers all year round. [ He clarifies, ] There's a Starfleet shipyard there, so that's why.

[realists]

[ state + country + usa + earth = jibberish, but she can understand the gist of it. ]

You grew up around ships.

[ of course he did. ]

[winscenario]

I grew up around corn, [ He corrects in a mocking tone. ] A farm, and vast open spaces with nothing but dirt. I didn't like the ships. In fact I held a pretty big grudge against Starfleet for the first two decades of my life.

[ So no, he didn't spend a lot of his time going off to see the shipyard. Well, he sort of did, but not with awe and fascination like she might think. Mostly he just glared at them and cursed Starfleet in his head for the shitty childhood he got. ]

[realists]

[ sounds like jyn v alliance ]

Why?

[winscenario]

[ Jim debates, for a moment, what to tell her, or if to tell her anything at all. ]

Because it took my father from me. The way I saw it back then, anyway.

[ So basically, a super healthy attitude on his end. ]

[realists]

[ hard same, it's very much how jyn saw the alliance and the empire. ]

What changed?

[winscenario]

Perspective.

[ That's all it is, a matter of perspective. He was on the other side and now he stands on the other, where his father once was; now he understands. ]

It was his choice all along. You know? He was faced with an impossible situation and he had a choice to make, and... I get it now. Because I would have done the same. [ A pause, ] I have done the same. I was just luckier than he was.

[realists]

[ a small, flicker of a smile touches her expression and she nods. no wonder she likes him. ]

Well. I suppose I'll have to sign up for you to let me go out with Cassian, yeah?

[winscenario]

[ Jim offers a little smile, perking up. ] I'll look forward to that.

[realists]

I'll let you get back to it. Later, Jim.

[ and she pushes herself back outta the room. much better manners this time. ]
