( video & action; un: kirk ) come fly with me
[ Jim's face greets the network, blue eyes alight with excitement and a big, happy smile on his face. He's dressed all proper in a flight suit, hair with that annoyingly perfect curl over his forehead, and behind him a glimpse of the front of the shuttle he's been working on can be seen. ]
Good morning, everyone! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Captain James T. Kirk, and for the six months I've been in the Quarantine, I've been a member of the Perimeter Guard as a surveyor. A couple of months ago, I took a small team to the waterfalls as we tracked down a mystery signal, and found an abandoned vessel there, buried in a cave. We brought it back with us, but it was severely damaged and it took a lot of work and sleepless hours to get it back into shape. However, it wasn't wasted time. I'd like to present to you all— [ He stands up and moves behind his device, so the camera focuses fully on the shuttle. ] the PGS Intrepid! [ ta-daaah ] She's good as new and fully functional now, and I'm excited to say she's ready to go well beyond the walls and all around the whole moon.
[ He comes into the view of the camera again, retaking his seat in front of it. ]
The shuttle is an invaluable asset of the Quarantine, and with her restoration, a new branch of the Perimeter Guard has been established: aerial survey and exploration. So far it's only Poe Dameron and myself, but I'd love to see more skilled pilots and explorers joining us.
Likewise, if you'd like to pilot the shuttle and have the skills to do so, but don't want to commit to that specific branch of the guard, there will also be flight permits available to any skilled pilots who might want to use the shuttle for quick trips and various missions.
On both these circumstances, there should be a small flight test to assess your skills.
Now, if you only have minimal or no knowledge whatsoever, but you're interested in learning, we'll also be offering piloting lessons, ranging from basic to more advanced depending on your current skill.
Should anyone have any further questions, feel free to respond here, or drop me a line through my personal inbox. I'm also often at the Perimeter Guard, and anyone's welcome to come by. In that case, you can also take a closer look at the shuttle.
[ He sits up, smile growing a hint wider. ] Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you. Kirk out.
(( ooc: open to both network replies and action threads @ the perimeter guard! feel free to check out the post about the new aerial survey & exploration branch of the perimeter guard (and also jooooin uuuuus). actual interactions aren't mandatory, and we can definitely handwave your character signing up for classes/taking the flight test/poking around/whatever, so don't feel like we have to play out any of it! ))

I don't particularly feel like going to jail on murder, so, consider yourself safe for now. [ It's all good natured teasing - truly, Re-L's not really the type to do that kind of thing for the laughs of it. The whole thing with allergies is still a mystery to her at best, considering they weren't really a thing in Romdeau, but many things were very different from her home dome.
She settles in to her meal just as well as Jim, one ankle crossed over her knee. It allows a plethora of room for her to eat off of, considering, and her head nods as he explains. ]
I have a feeling you'd tell me that even if it didn't. [ She knows he's proud of it, after all. She would be too for such a restoration to come to fruition. ]
I imagine it's been a lot like a child for you.

At least he's not allergic to too many things, or else he might've not been accepted into the Academy. Berries in general are easy enough for him to avoid, even on other planets, at least until Bones can check whether or not Jim's allergic to them. ]
Maybe, but in this case I am telling the truth. [ As she will be able to see for herself when he takes her up for a spin. ] I wouldn't know. I've never had a child— not even a pet. Just the fluffy chicken.

We'll see, won't we? [ Re-L is not stranger to suspending belief until it's proven to her, and this case is no different. Also, might as well annoy Jim a little if she possibly can do so. She missed a month or so of it being sick, and that just wouldn't do. ]
Technically I can't, ever, but considering that I dealt with a chronically four year old autoreiv every day I can say, pretty damn securely, that I wouldn't want one anyway. [ Granted, Pino was mostly a pain in the ass because she was finally making decisions for herself and being a pain about it. Like choosing to be only left handed and 'learning' to use that hand even though all autoreivs were programmed to be ambidextrous from the beginning. What a headache - ]
A chicken? That's your pet? A chicken? [ Granted, Re-L has probably never in her life seen a live chicken. ]

They do seem to be a handful, [ Jim agrees. ] I've never had much of a paternal instinct, so I've never even considered it.
[ He doesn't linger much on the bit of information Re-L reveals about herself, though he makes a mental note of it. Bones probably knows, he thinks, but one way or the other, it's not like it matters much overall. He doesn't think so, anyway. He's never wondered himself nor asked Bones to run any tests, but for all he knows the radiation exposure when he died might have just made him sterile, too. ]
Yes. Petunia's sort of a... fluffy white chicken. She just looks like a fat plush. She's cute. [ He shrugs, fully aware it's a weird piece of information, but like it's perfectly commonplace to him by now. ]

The bonus with Pino is that she's mechanized.. eventually she'll break down but right about now she's fairly indestructible no matter what... stupidity she inflicts on herself.
[ Though Re-L might admit to getting a laugh from Pino playing scared and running.. with the most monotone screaming as she does so. That she wishes she had a recording of to epitomize the experience of a robot with free will and 'emotions.' ]
Thankfully Kristeeva is an adult model so we're only watching out for one. Or well.. Vincent is.
[ Though.. the moment he mentions chicken there's a bit of a sideways look, and she stops even taking a bite of her burger to ask this question that apparently cannot wait - ]
A chicken? You two have a chicken as a pet?

[ She probably can't get sick nor does she get hungry, he's guessing, but does she have the ability to learn, or to act childishly? Re-L, being as determined not to show any emotions, probably wouldn't admit to caring either way, but Jim still remembers, when they both were aged down to kids. Iggy, the autoreiv, was her friend.
So she might not say it, but Jim thinks that maybe there's some shred of emotion when it comes to the autoreiv that looks and acts as a little girl, enough that Re-L would likely care about what happens to her.
He huffs at the repeated question, shaking his head as he pops a fry into his mouth. ]
Yes, we have a chicken. I know, most sane people get a cat or a dog.

I wouldn't know. I've hardly ever seen a child much less helped in raising one. Children weren't all that common in the Dome before I left and it fell.. With population control in mind and not may citizens dying they weren't all that necessary to be given to wanting parents. [ So comparing Pino to human children wasn't all that useful. The closest she'd come to a human child had been Timothy, for the short time she'd been in the Commune, but at the time she'd been a little busy trying to breathe through deteriorating lungs, and the boy had been killed shortly after. Not a happy ending for either of them, really - but she has a feeling she would've shooed him away more than tried to learn from the experience anyway.
Not that it would shock Jim to learn that at all. ]
In the most objective sense she doesn't actually know emotions, doesn't need anything other than a charge at night to sustain. She does, however, completely choose to 'learn' to be left-handed when all autoreivs are ambidextrous in their core programming, prefers to embroil Vincent in snowball fights instead of allowing him to be productive.. those kinds of things.
[ If he did ask, Iggy would be a different story. He'd been her confidant since she was old enough to talk, and losing him was still a bit like a phantom limb. Pino was useful, sure, but she was definitely not her Iggy. ]
Why the hell would you want a bird anyway? Otabek has a hoard of cats you could've chosen from..

But he's also learned from Re-L that there were people living outside the Dome, so... that sort of throws all that out the window. Unless the government within the Dome didn't know about that, but that's practically impossible, he thinks. ]
I'd say that seems like a kid's behavior to me. Wanting attention, and wanting to play. [ He can't say one way or the other if Pino really chooses to be left-handed or if it's just a tendency, like with humans. He doesn't know nearly enough about autoreivs. But if he were to meet her, his opinion would likely differ a good deal from Re-L's in a lot of aspects. That much he's sure of. ]
I wasn't exactly planning on it! Seemed like fun when Bryn asked, and we had the garden, so why not? [ He shrugs, taking another bite from his burger. ] She's grown on me since then. On both of us. She's just like any other pet.

Well, when the government has to make them.. [ She turns a hand palm up as if saying that it would be inherent that control over who is born when and etc comes next. It's the nature of a government to control as it were, so the fact that children were so regulated had never occurred to her as anything problematic in the first place.
Even so, as Jim goes on about it seeming like children's behavior, Re-L shrugs her shoulders. So far they hadn't noted any progression in Pino's mental age, but they hadn't been together in the Rabbit all that long, either. Perhaps she'd notice over time, if she noticed anything. ]
Vincent deals with her the most. He would know better than I would.
It's a bird, Jim. [ There's no particular vendetta against birds on Re-L's part, just... it's not very usual. Not that the girl's ever had a pet before or that pets (that weren't autoreivs) were common at all in the Dome. ]
I suppose she's bug control, then.
