[ Have a short burst of static as the feed opens to a brunette giving the camera a light tap as she regards the device with an openly curious lilt about her expression. This level of technology isn't new to her, not in the slightest. It's common enough on the Planet, but it's different from the terminals to which she'd grown accustomed in Purgatorium and its novelty still hasn't worn out on her despite her arrival earlier in the month, a tribute to just how much time she's spent resting and recovering given the harshness of the previous world's conditions. She's still too pale for a lack of sun and too thin with some lingering tiredness about her. It's really more convenient, what with this device being mobile as opposed to bolted to the ground, of course. The inclusion of a camera with video function is certainly a clean step up from voice and text with tiny pictures and she expects it will serve her well enough in this new, foreign world.
It's a moment later, once she's sure the device is properly on and functioning, that she offers the camera, the audience an easy smile and a two fingered salute in greeting. ]
Hey there, Riverview! My name is Valeria Myles. I'd say it's nice to meet you, but think I'll save that for individual introductions. If there's anyone from the Planet here or Shinra means anything to you, I'd appreciate it if you could get in touch with me.
[ That smile of hers doesn't slack. The network has always proven the quickest way to determine if there's a familiar face around and about, after all, and it should prove useful in gathering some much needed intel given how little and wholly ideal the information orientation had provided. Things are seldom so good. Speaking of -- ]
Orientation was a little lacking in providing anything beyond the bare minimum details about this place, so I thought I'd ask the lot of you and hope you aren't too tired of these sorts of questions already.
What can you tell me about Riverview? The good, the bad, the ugly -- I'm looking less for the standard tourist answers and more for the nitty gritty, but I'd be glad to take that and everything in between seeing how I'm going to be here a while. [ A pause, brief but thoughtful. ] If you happen to know a place that serves a proper coffee, I'd be happy to take that, too. It's... been a while. It almost seems overdue.
[ Any nostalgia that's managed to seep into her voice is gone as she blinks back to the present. There's that bubbling energy, that smile tugged wider. ]
That's a fair introduction, don't you think? Thank you for your time. I hope to hear from you soon.

As for coffee...there are a few good cafes. I'll send the address of the best.
[ Or at least in his opinion. ]

What makes it mostly good in your opinion? If you don't mind me asking, that is.

I believe I know what you mean, but these sorts of things are best experienced, I think. To whom do I owe the thanks?
no subject
I'm Otabek. And yes, best experienced. How they do it isn't for everyone, but you'll find something.
no subject
It's nice to meet you, Otabek, and thank you! I don't suppose you'd have any suggestions regarding the clothing stores I've seen around, would you?
no subject
Ah. I could, depending on what you like. I go clothing shopping frequently.
[ But to be fair, not just for himself! ]
no subject
You know, that's a good question. It's been a while since I've had anything like variety at my fingertips and I don't know too much about the climate here yet. Then again, I can't remember the last time I really touched up my wardrobe.
[ Considering her circumstances back on the Planet and then in Purgatorium... ]
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess there's a lot of variety in the Quarantine. Am I right?
no subject
[ But he was wearing sweatpants in August so... ]

Oh, you said it's mostly good here in the Quarantine. What, in your opinion, makes it mostly good here if you don't mind my asking? Variety in clothes and coffee aside.

[ Compared to Purgatorium, most any place would, but she places weight on the words of those who've found themselves here over the brochure so to speak. ]
'Things' as in regular city things, I take it?

Valeria. We share a room, don't we?
[She's on her way to work, so the video is turning to show some random scenery as she shifts the device in her hand.]
I agree, orientation was lacking. I'm on my way to analyze some data in order to gauge the climate of this place. I can provide you with some insights on that if I gain any.
[This is starting to feel like too much of a coincidence. Two familiar faces, and she's rooming with both of them. While she'll take advantage of having some knowledge over Val and Ed, she'll have to make sure to be extra cautious in case this is some kind of strange trap set up by some higher power, after all.]
We do. Citrine, was it? Ed mentioned there was a fresh face around.
[ And it's true enough, really. She and Ed had talked, albeit briefly concerning Citrine's arrival and the very same points still aflutter in her mind at this moment had been brought up. It really does seem like one too many coincidences alongside the fact that they're rooming together. Really, what are the chances? ]
I appreciate the offer. I'd be happy to take you up on that and share what I learn in turn. It's only fair and two can cover more ground than one, wouldn't you agree?
no subject
I like that idea. In fact, I believe we would make a good team.
[She remembers Val being one of the more reasonable people at the Department when it was still intact. Not like another person who irresponsibly left everything behind twice... Ah, but there is no point in dwelling over that now.]
Are you working with the Perimeter Guard? I'm planning to make use of all the data I can access while there.
no subject
[ Folding her arms under her chest, she cants her head just so in response to Citrine's question. ]
I was offered a job with the Perimeter Guard when I arrived and I intend to take them up on that offer in a few days' time. I've been dedicating my time to learning what I can about the Quarantine on my own and didn't think it wise to divide my time and attention just yet with a promising open offer on the table. I do intend to use every available resource as I come into them, however.
[ That that includes any information the Guard can supply goes left unsaid. It's really more of a given as far as the Turk is concerned. ]
What division are you working in if you don't mind my asking?
no subject
Wall Research and Development.
[She tries to keep her response brief for this, but the prospect of Valeria joining as well makes her a little more talkative.]
I was afraid it would be a dreary desk job when they proposed it, but it seems they want me outside surveying the field whenever I can. I think being with the Guard will serve as a great opportunity to learn about both the insides and outsides of this place.
[She likes how organized that part of her arrival was. Finding purpose in Purgatorium had been the worst part of it, so this change in pace for once is more than welcome. If the technology is any sign, this work might suit her much better than trying to hold White Fang together.]
no subject
I'll admit to having been wondering about the wall. That there's a unit dedicated to it is... interesting.
[ To say the least and considering the circumstances yet again. She nods, thoughtful. ]
I agree. I believe I'll be joining in the next few days, a week at most. There are still some things I'd like to check out before I devote myself to training and new duties and I have no intention of making anything less than the best possible impression if you catch my meaning.
no subject
From what I've gathered so far, frequent outages seem to occur on the outer wall of the quarantine zone. I have yet to find the reason for this happening but I assume it's linked to the creatures roaming the less inhabited areas. My plan is to take a look as soon as I've finished preparations here.
[The major difference to being in Purgatorium, she notes, is the ability to prepare before going out. Actual medical kits and technology make it so much easier to keep track of everything. There is only one thing she hasn't tested yet, and she's looking forward to try out her powers against whatever roams outside the city.]
Perhaps you would like to join me sometime? Later, that is. When you're ready.
no subject
[ Particularly considering that she's going to be here for a substantial period of time as well as the objectives she's lining up and ordering daily. She doesn't doubt Citrine has some of her own beyond what's evident, for that matter, and questions certainly. ]
Is there anything in particular that you're curious about concerning our newfound situation? I keep my ears open generally, but I wouldn't mind tuning them a bit.
no subject
I may be suspicious due to previous experiences, but I'd like to learn more about the organizational structure of this quarantine. If the portal is pulling people from several universes together with no restrictions, how come there hasn't been rampant destruction or a war yet? It seems unlikely that people would live in peace.
[Clearly some kind of government body runs this quarantine, but how do they keep newcomers at bay should they stir up trouble? Law enforcers would have to know how to handle extra-dimensional powers, which she doubts anyone could train for. She's sure there are people here that can overpower her. That thought hurts her pride, but she knows better than to be haughty in a situation like this.]
no subject
[ Somewhat because for all that she herself desires peace, she's well aware of the costs that may accompany it, that not all people strive toward such ends and many more would just as soon turn things on their heads for their own selfish desires without any care for their fellows or out of a desire to harm them outright. ]
There seems to be a great deal of trust placed in the people who arrive through the portal. I intend to inquire more regarding the history of the Quarantine and the process of receiving and accepting individuals into the community before I settle on a judgment, but I'll admit to being surprised there aren't more... problems considering the diverse races and cultures gathered here alone. It certainly seems idyllic.
[ And she's not inclined to blindly trust anything that should seem so great. ]
Action
He had heard there were new people one floor six, but he didn't pay much mind to it. People came and went as he had learned the hard way. So he didn't even bother introducing himself, instead he want on with his life as he always did. He was standing in the kitchen half asleep as he was cooking, the smell of eggs and bacon could be smelled wafting through the floor. Who cared that it was nearly six pm, he wanted breakfast. His hair was wild and sticking all directions and he was wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt and a red cloak over it with the hood down as he wiggled the pan a bit to flip the eggs. As late as it was he had just crawled out of bed from his post work nap.]
no subject
Breakfast this late? I guess it's morning somewhere, huh?
[ Not that she can talk. She chooses a free counter atop which to place her bags and notebook and starts shuffling through the former in search of the coffee she purchased earlier today. With as much as she's jotted in observation, she's going to need it in review. ]
no subject
Work nights and early mornings.... it's morning for me.
[ he grumbled in an accent that might sound strange for her, the Gotham accent of New Jersey. he turned off the burner and dumped the eggs on his plate, moving to just lean on the counter and eat while he waited for the coffee.]
New to the floor, or a passerby?
no subject
[ That's accurate enough, she thinks, as she waves it off. She's been mostly out for the better part of the month on some much needed bed rest much to her chagrin. Good and behind is how she feels now and, of course, curious about the Quarantine and its residents. Somewhat wary, too, but that's -- well, it's a little less here, more out there. If there were anyone she needed to keep an eye on and at a distance in this shared space, she's confident Ed would have mentioned it. That accent of his earns a slight cant of the head, but that smile of hers doesn't slacken even as she extracts her purchase and shifts to find a place to slip it in the cabinets. ]
I'm Valeria, and you are...?
no subject
[ He replied and asked as he lifted the hand with the spatula up and yawned against the back of his hand before shaking the hood of the cloak off. His dark messy hair now visible as he shifted the tired blue eyes her way. ]
Todd, Jason Todd. [ He answered in kind, he loved to try and make a bond joke of it every chance he could ever since dear old Agent 37. ] Nice to meet you Val.
[ Sorry, Valeria. He gives everyone nicknames.]

I'm familiar with ShinRa.
[A brief response, but something at least. It was enough to offer a familiarity to her.]
Are they your employer?
[A shot in the dark, sure, but from her demeanor and her tone, ShinRa wasn't an 'enemy'. Before things went south, 30 years ago...ShinRa was a name to be respected, not feared.]
(OOC: Sorry for the delay, this week has been nuts!)
text
As a matter of fact, they are. On the Planet, anyway. I haven't come across any familiar names from the company or any sort of presence here.
[ It's one of the first things she'd thought to check. Purgatorium saw a fair number of company personnel throughout her tenure, after all. Whether or not that would prove to be a pattern here in the Quarantine, she couldn't say, but sitting idle and twiddling her thumbs has never suited her. That, and she's quite interested in learning more about this person. Just how long has it been since she's spoken with someone from the Planet? She gives her head a shake after a moment, sinking her fingers into the keys again. ]
It's a big name, maybe a little easier to recognize than "the Planet" given these circumstances. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask around and see if anyone else had found their way through the portal. Seems like it worked!
[OOC: You're A-okay! Don't worry about it!]
text
[And Vincent is beyond happy about that fact. The last thing this place needed was their sort of "progress".]
Until now, I was the only one here from the Planet.
[There's a moment's delay before the next arrives.]
What did you do for Shinra?
text
I would've been surprised if they had, I think. That sounds kind of lonely, being the only one from the Planet here, though.
[ A beat. ] Are you familiar with the Turks?
text
[It was a response, at least, until he considered how to respond to her question. It also wasn't precisely a lie. Vincent was used to being alone. Even though he'd been awake now for nearly three years, spending 30 in a box with nothing but your never-ending nightmares makes you used to your own company, and most days he preferred it that way.
Well, until he sat idle for too long and realized he actually missed the rag-tag bunch who called themselves his friends. Those were bad days.
Ultimately, though, he decided to go with a simple answer to her simple, yes/no question.]
Yes.
text; @RuffRabbit
There are things outside the wall you should be careful of.
Don't go wandering alone without a weapon or a bodyguard or something.
text; @v.myles
I do appreciate the advice, though. I don't suppose you have any firsthand knowledge you might be willing to share as to what to expect out there? I'm not in a hurry to go out, but what's out there seems like something worth knowing!
text; @RuffRabbit
If you can fight, then there's no problem.
Maybe.
I don't go out there myself.
[As Valeria gets a reply to these texts, they flash on the screen next to an odd, rabbit-shaped block. at the end of this message, the rabbit actually... bounces, and then lets out a very high pitched 'SCARY!' whine before falling silent again.]
I saw giant birds with teeth inside their beaks.
Wings that ended with almost razor-sharp feathers. Claws more like something you'd see on a dinosaur. Not a bird.
text; @v.myles
I'm not sure whether or not that sounds any kinder than a Formula or a Deenglow. I'm sure I'll get the chance to make a comparison eventually.
Are you a programmer of some kind or something?
video; un: ghostking
There's a few places for coffee. [ insert directions here. ] And I'm sure someone's already told you to stay within the fences unless you feel like fighting monsters.
video; un: v.myles
Someone has, yes. I'm still looking into descriptions of these monsters, though. What's formidable to one person might not be to another and considering the circumstances, well...
[ She offers a tilt of her head. Different people from different worlds -- she thinks the circumstances and the various elements speak for themselves to some degree. A smile tugs at the corners of her lips with those directions offered, too. ]
I appreciate the directions, by the way. Anything in particular you'd recommend?
no subject
It's no big deal. I usually take my coffee black, but they make some coffee drinks like mocha frappes and stuff. Too sweet for me, to be honest.
in person;
but it's when she mentions coffee that a grin spreads on his lips. he knows just the thing, thanks to the nico boy who used to spend so much time around their floor. setting down the stew, plate of cookies, and the books in front of her with a smile, he straightens and slides his hands into his pockets. ]
I think I know just the thing if you want coffee. There's a boy that comes and goes sometimes and he left some coffee here for us. I'll go make it.
