[ some of you might have seen this username on the network before. she isn't a stranger to responding to other people's messages, nor to holding private conversation but as for addressing the entire network, well. this is certainly a first time.

peggy carter is in her office in the riverview police force. it's a slow afternoon, which is the only reason for this little message, really. ]

They're really quite attached to their celebrations aren't they. If I have to secure another event, be it a dance ball, a speed dating evening or anything that involves ribbons, glitter, gifts and large, outdoor parties, I fear I may have to file a complaint. Honestly now, this is getting out hand.

[ no one needs this amount of cheer, surely. ]

More importantly, I am searching for someone who might understand a thing or two about what makes these little devices tick.

[As much as Ed could get caught up in the events once there, he was hardly one to admit to enjoying them - or even to expect as much - in advance.]

If you need any help in the future, I'm kind of a Jack of all trades on the Guard. My main focus is the Surveyor Unit, but I fill in where I'm needed.

You and I both have the Guard in common, it would seem. Do you enjoy your work with the unit?

[That sounds incredibly boring, and Ed was hardly the type for casual dating even if knitting wouldn't absolutely put him to sleep regardless, the combination would be torture.]

I do what I know. Map making is pretty easy when you're already exploring the place, and repairs are kind of a hobby of mine even before being here. I take it from the rest of this conversation you don't have the luxury of enjoying what you do, though.

[He knows he doesn't envy her situation, even if someone else could find pleasure in it.]

Not at the Force, not at the moment. Though I suppose securing public celebrations is better than fighting monsters. A boring routine is a blessing, at times.

[ but it is boring. ]

I work for the Guard, myself. Map-making, you said. How many do you have of the terrain beyond the fence?

[At the mention of fighting monsters Ed only smiles awkwardly. He knew a thing or two about fighting monsters, and likely would prefer the lifestyle he had back then to securing any large public functions.]

Me, specifically or the Guard? I think it would be hard to count everything that's been collectively put together, there's a whole library. I lost a lot of my personal stuff in that fire back in August, so I don't have many right now.

[He had submitted any findings to the Guard, so whatever personal losses he had there could easily be replaced with new copies but it wasn't much of a priority with everything else going on since the fire.]

I should probably get on replacing them soon, now that I think about it.

I was there that night. I'm sorry. It sounds as if we have lost some precious information.

[ there's a hint of a smile. intel matters to her more than anything. clark has given her a lot of information, but clark is gone. ]

Nothing I can't replace.

[He just needs to get it all organized again.]

I wasn't around to save anything, my brother and I were working on getting the shop up and running that night. Didn't even know about the fire until the next day.

[A slight eyebrow raise at that before he returns the smile.]

Yeah, same to you.

[A pause. He can guess from the username, but he'd much rather be sure.]

I didn't catch your name.

Peggy Carter. It's a pleasure, I'm sure, Mr. Elric.

[ professional and pleasant, she is, at least with her own colleagues. she'd offer a hand if it weren't for the bloody devices. modern technology, indeed. ]

Your brother, is he in the Guard as well?

Ed's fine, really.

[Small blessings, Ed hated hand shakes, but that was for his own reasons and it tended to make him come off as more rude than he truly was. Then again, it really was only a matter of time before he wouldn't be hiding his situation from everyone here, the same as before.]

He is, same as me. Mostly Surveyor, Salvage and Repair, Search and Rescue. We fill in where we're needed, but I'm more used to that than he is, been doing it longer.

has he found anything past the fences that's worth salvaging, I wonder? I was scouting for much of the same, myself.

Yeah, we do a lot.

[Somewhat sheepish, like he's embarrassed by it, really.]

Mostly, we work with raw materials. What we find useful might... Seem pointless to anyone else? Generally the Salvage and Repair unit seems to be into more advanced stuff, computers and spaceships. It's a little more than the tech from our home world allowed for.

[As in way out of his league, and he's too busy trying to figure this place out to learn about all knew futuristic technologies on top of everything else.]

We can make basically anything out of the right ingredients, so we're not too picky.
