How do you go about picking gifts?

[ He's just going to dive right in. No real introduction, but Steve figures that most people won't care too much about who is asking this or why. ]

I'm sure a lot of you are better at this than I am, so I guess I need some advice. How do you find a good gift for someone that already has far more than you've seen for half your lifetime? Not that I'm aiming to impress anyone, but it'd be nice to pull it off.

[ He grins a little. Okay, so maybe he's trying. Just a little. But Steve is rarely the one that surprises anyone else. He just wants a chance at doing something cool for a change. Of course, he's realistic and knows this is unlikely, but he can try. ]

I'm in a little over my head on this one. Everyone else always has the flashy stuff covered.

If you want direct suggestions, I really can't throw anything out to you here.

However, if you want something generalized such as the process of how I choose my gifts, then I definitely examine the kind of person they are. No matter how long someone's lived, we're all from different worlds; there's no way they have experienced everything. Make it an opportunity for them.

[ That was a curious fact. Loki moves, pressing his palms against Steve's shoulders, massaging them slowly. It also gives him a better look at the screen. ]

It seems I must, if I ever expect to live to see it.

Why do you like boats?

Bah, you're boring.

[But since that's clearly not going to work, he becomes a touch more serious. Ivar's very introspective, which is actually a good quality to have for gift-giving.]

Why not get him something valuable and irreplaceable? That's always a nice surprise.

[He stole the shoes off his friend's dead cousin, his perspective on this is a bit skewed.]

[ Now that is advice he can get behind. An experience is what he's been trying to figure out how to share for a while. He's still struggling, but the idea of making a gift out of it sounds great. Something positive and fulfilling is just what he thinks Loki needs for himself. ]

You sound like a good gift giver.

[ He tilts the device slightly so Loki can see the screen better, leaning back. ]

I like the idea of them. You can go to all kinds of places in boats and planes, see things you'd never be able to see otherwise. They get you places.

It was a boat that found me.

[ Caleb holds his thumb and forefinger about an inch and a half apart. ]

Just a little.

I mean, I'd still go for it, but it wouldn't be the main event kinda gift, you know? More like. What I'd wrap the real gift in.

[ Loki chuckles at that, pleased, even as he kneads Steve's shoulders. ]

Very good. You are learning.

[ Ah. His expression softens at that. ]

Asgard's boats fly. They sail through the skies, unfettered by all. They are not large, but they were perfect for getting a glimpse of the falls, our intrepid mountains. Perhaps that is what I should get you.

I consider myself a really likable person. Plus, I love making friends.

I think pretty hard about my friends and what I can do for them. If you tell me a bit about yours, maybe I can think of something. You know, outside the box.

Did he care that dinner was served on gold plates? Being surrounded by luxury doesn't always make someone happy. Usually it makes you feel more isolated.

[After having to talk himself out of bringing home every cat he saw during the past few days, commitment has been something he's used as a 'no' to every cute fluffball he's been tempted to take home.]

You might want to check on that first. I think there's also more than just dogs and cats here that need homes. Maybe an animal that's not from your home world?

If I give him my head, then I won't be able to see his reaction to it.

[ Which is perfect logic, really. ]

Valuable and irreplaceable?

[ What is irreplaceable to Loki? He nods, turning that over in his mind. ]

That's a good point. I... guess I've been trying to give him one thing at least.

But they're dead because someone killed them. That's different.

[His hero sensibilities are upset.]

I never said it was for Loki...

[Steve is not subtle at all.]

[ He sighs. Yup, he expected that. Most of the time Steve doesn't mind, but he doesn't want to be boring. ]

I could do that. He might even wear it.

Minor detail.

[Ivar waves his hand like he's batting the words away. He nods approvingly.]

See? Now you're using your brain. Give something like that from the heart and he's sure to bed you.

[An added bonus in Ivar's book.]

[ Steve chuckles at the compliment which is really Loki being smug, but his shoulders sag and he lowers the device momentarily, forgetting it. ]

Mm. I don't need a flying boat. I just... thought you might like going for a ride sometime. Maybe see some things.

I guess it's not as exciting when you're used to it.

[That's usually how murder works!!! But he has the sense not to say it.]

It wasn't hard to guess, my dude.

[With an introduction like that, Steve is already approving. They like making friends!]

All right. He's clever, and creative, the kind of guy that's always coming up with ideas. He can make things come to life with a thought and calm dreams. His taste is way more refined than anything I know, so I don't think I could impress him with anything like style, but he's also seen a lot of combat, so that won't be new. The problem is that he's got so many talents that I think he gets bored.

I guess not as much, but that's less about the gold and more... It was complicated.

[ He doesn't want to speak of the past when he doesn't really know first hand. But he imagines that it probably was not a highlight for Loki. Still, comparing burgers and shakes to elaborate feasts feels lackluster at best. And Loki is pretty good at looking unimpressed by all things mortal. ]

Maybe. I don't know how he'd take to a pet. But it might be nice to have a companion he can talk to.

Not everything needs to be exciting.

[ And he's warming up to the idea all the same. ]

We can try that, if you like. I know you enjoy seeing new places.

[But murder!! Steve can't swallow that one. It's too much for him.]

...Well, I guess it couldn't be that many people.

Loki's not a villain. He's... just made some bad choices.

Pretty sure that's not what he'd say if you asked him

[Which he knows is partly Loki's weird self-esteem issues, but he does also think there's some truth behind it. Loki isn't exactly a good person, but that's fine.]

[ And that gets Steve coughing in surprise, choking on his breath. ]

I wasn't trying to get him in bed.

[ He is now trying not to actually blush, though. ]

Well, he'd be wrong.

I'm not saying I approve of everything he's done. But I don't fault who he is either. By some standards, a lot of us could be put in that same category.

Something tells me that you couldn't be, considering the reaction you just had to the murder thing

I don't like senseless murder. That doesn't mean everyone agrees with me or likes what I do.
