informal poll for you guys. if you had to choose, is this place more like:

a) fantasia, from the neverending story
b) oz, from the wizard of oz
c) wherever the hell it was with the muppets and stuff, from labyrinth
d) wonderland, from alice in wonderland

[ The question might seem like a frivolous one, but the answers should actually be pretty informative, and it's way more fun than just asking people to describe what this place is really like. ]

Happy is relative, isn't it? Either way, it was a place that had plenty of dangers, but also had good things if you know about the dangers and were used to handling them. Which may be closer to how it is here: in the jungles beyond the first wall, there are many things which may or may not be dangerous. Knowing how to handle those is what makes it manageable.

More or less I don't feel this is a place out to "get" anyone. It's alien, yes, but there's a structure and a more or less sensible way for the city to handle the influx of refugees. Plus allowing them to decide what kind of citizen they'd like to be, if any at all, and for how long.

So yes. More like Avatar, before the space marines started deforestation?
