[ The camera catches a glimpse of Jim's face in his Perimeter Guard uniform, but only for the flicker of a second before there's a bump of some sort and the device is knocked down. Jim's surprised expression is the last thing to show before the only view for a few seconds is the ceiling. His voice can be heard from off camera. ]

John! Bad boy, bad.

[ There's a snout next, sniffing at the screen, then a tongue... then finally Jim reaches his phone and picks it up from the ground. He's grinning a little and shaking his head as he props it up on the table again and pulls away, dragging his new friend along with him so he's kept away from his device. ]

Sorry. That was... anyway. Captain James Kirk here, and this is John, the latest member of the aerial unit. [ He just wandered in one day and now Jim's keeping him, shut up. ] So— due to the latest rains and the most recent flooding near the river, a lot of people have found themselves temporarily displaced. I'm one of those people, but luckily me and my buddy here have a place to crash at the Perimeter Guard. We have plenty of beds and mattresses available here, for what it's worth, so anyone who finds themselves momentarily homeless, you'll be more than welcome here.

There should be other places we could use to offer people some shelter. The community centers come to mind, for instance. Gathering a few supplies would help though, so anyone willing to help and donate a few things, that would be great.

Additionally, I'll be making rounds on the shuttle, so anyone who needs a hand or absolutely must get somewhere out of bounds due to the flood, let me know.

And that's it! [ He smiles a little, nodding. ] Remember to keep safe. And if you don't need to be anywhere near it, stay away from the river. At least until the rain lets up and we manage to figure out where all this water's coming from.

[ Jim beams at the camera. ]

Doesn't he look like a John to you?

[sentiences]

He seems a little too perky to be a John.

[winscenario]

I don't know, man. He's pretty much along the lines of the John I know.

Even if he is kinda grumpy right now.

[ That's what happens when you find out a dog's been named after you, though. ]

[sentiences]

You're lucky that's all he's being.

[ Kennex would have brought the house down. ]

[winscenario]

[ Oh, Sheppard's trying, really. ]

He's biased. I'm charming and he likes me very much. He'll pout and whine for a while but get over it eventually.

[sentiences]

[ He laughs softly. ]

That sounds like the John I know.

[winscenario]

Maybe it's a universal John thing. Do you think they're all grumpy and moody?

[sentiences]

It's possible. I don't know enough Johns to know. Just the one.

[winscenario]

Yeah, me neither. But it's certainly starting to become a pattern.

Anyway, this John is definitely cute and friendly though. And he loves cuddling and being petted. [ He buries his fingers into the dog's furry neck and scratches him, cooing a little. ] You're a good boy, aren't ya?

[sentiences]

[ Dorian watches the dog with unabashed curiosity. ]

He seems that way?

[winscenario]

Yes, he does. He's a cutie. [ Evidently John loves the cooing, because he's wagging his tail like crazy. ]

You like dogs, Dorian?

[sentiences]

Sure. I mean, I've never interacted with one but I imagine I'd like them.

[winscenario]

No! Seriously? Oh, you have to, then. How else can you know if you'd like them?

[ Or if they'd like Dorian— okay never mind that, everyone would like Dorian. ]

Come by the guard sometime. You can meet John.

[sentiences]

It's a wild guess on my part.

[ Plus, Dorian is similar to a dog, after all. ]

Is that allowed?

[winscenario]

[ He shrugs. ] Sure. Anyone can visit the guard if they want to, it's not like it's closed off.

[sentiences]

Then I'll stop by sometime. I'm trying to work hard at the station so that I can earn a promotion to detective.

[winscenario]

[ That's so cute though. Jim smiles. ] Yeah? How's that been going for you?

[sentiences]

[ Dorian smiles brightly. ]

It's a bit slow, but it feels . . . real.

[winscenario]

[ Curious thing to say. ] Didn't it feel real back home?

[sentiences]

Sometimes. When I'm out in the field, very little matters. But when it's over . . . it feels like a dream. Like it could end at any moment and I just wouldn't know.

[winscenario]

The same could be said for just about anyone, and just about anything. Life's uncertain and unexpected that way.

[sentiences]

I don't think people live in that kind of uncertainty, even when life is unpredictable.

[ Nobody goes around thinking "oh yeah I might get turned off". ]

[winscenario]

That would depend on the person. Generally speaking, it's true, we don't tend to think or focus much on our own mortality, but some people have a more difficult time with that than others.

[ Dorian getting turned off sounds very much like dying (or rather, being killed), so Jim's absolutely drawing that parallel. ]

I'm sorry that you have to live with that fear back home, but for what it's worth, it's not something you have to worry about here.

[sentiences]

[ Dorian smiles. ]

I don't. Though that's strange too.

[winscenario]

Not worrying about dying?

[ Jim chuckles. ]

Your world's weird. Creating something as amazing as you only to think about ever shutting it down... can't really wrap my head around that, honestly.
