[ The camera catches a glimpse of Jim's face in his Perimeter Guard uniform, but only for the flicker of a second before there's a bump of some sort and the device is knocked down. Jim's surprised expression is the last thing to show before the only view for a few seconds is the ceiling. His voice can be heard from off camera. ]
John! Bad boy, bad.
[ There's a snout next, sniffing at the screen, then a tongue... then finally Jim reaches his phone and picks it up from the ground. He's grinning a little and shaking his head as he props it up on the table again and pulls away, dragging his new friend along with him so he's kept away from his device. ]
Sorry. That was... anyway. Captain James Kirk here, and this is John, the latest member of the aerial unit. [ He just wandered in one day and now Jim's keeping him, shut up. ] So— due to the latest rains and the most recent flooding near the river, a lot of people have found themselves temporarily displaced. I'm one of those people, but luckily me and my buddy here have a place to crash at the Perimeter Guard. We have plenty of beds and mattresses available here, for what it's worth, so anyone who finds themselves momentarily homeless, you'll be more than welcome here.
There should be other places we could use to offer people some shelter. The community centers come to mind, for instance. Gathering a few supplies would help though, so anyone willing to help and donate a few things, that would be great.
Additionally, I'll be making rounds on the shuttle, so anyone who needs a hand or absolutely must get somewhere out of bounds due to the flood, let me know.
And that's it! [ He smiles a little, nodding. ] Remember to keep safe. And if you don't need to be anywhere near it, stay away from the river. At least until the rain lets up and we manage to figure out where all this water's coming from.
(( ooc: this post is open to action for the following options: around the perimeter guard barracks, getting some rest, working, or helping other misplaced people out; near the river, aiding anyone in trouble and/or possibly fighting any of the monsters; a little all over the place on his shuttle, ready to jump in and get anyone out of a tough spot. ))

I did pretty much all I could for now. Just gotta make sure John has water and food for the night. Other than that, I'd say I deserve a bit of rest after a whole day of running around.
no subject
I have tea, if that works for you. [ Pity he doesn't have any brandy. ] Will I be hosting a hungry captain?
no subject
I still have some leftover sandwich, I think. it's alright. The tea will work just fine, thank you. [ He pauses. ] Should I bring something?
no subject
No, just give me an hour. Do you have any food allergies?
[ A sandwich will not fucking do, who survives on that? ]
no subject
Strawberries, pickles and vinegar. [ He answers after a moment of silence and just... watching Hux, like he's trying to figure him out. ] So I should forget the sandwich?
no subject
An hour, Captain. Do not be late.
[ The feed switches off abruptly and Hux, in the ensuing half-hour, is incredibly glad for all the bars and coffee-shops on the moon as he makes a mercy-dash to the nearest to pick up two toasties, cheese and ham. Has them wrapped in insulation foil before hurrying back to the Guard and through winding corridors to his quiet wing where the ISA workshop is located.
He runs out of time to hide anything on the desks and so throws tarps over them instead, more concerned with setting up a comfortable area in the office to entertain his visitor. The bed hopefully looks more like a couch (it doesn't) with pillows neatly stacked against the wall and he turns his only chair toward a pop-up table, a small thing, to face the other direction.
It looks civilised, which is the best he can hope for. ]

[ Of course he has no idea that Hux goes to all that trouble for his sake, or he'd have offered to get them some takeout before dropping by. He's already intruding on Hux's personal space and time as it is, he may as well have done something other than just show up.
But instead he makes sure he gets John settled in for the night, then he takes a long, hot shower because he's been walking around in soaked trousers and boots all day and he doesn't like having his feet wet and cold. He has to settle for more casual clothes since his uniform's soaked but a pair of black pants and a grey shirt more than do the trick, and he doesn't look too out of place as he meanders through the corridors until he's standing in front of the door to Hux's office.
He knocks and waits, feeling weirdly empty-handed. He's starting to think he should've brought something along as a thank you. ]
no subject
A little ruffled but in an orderly manner, as if he has been re-learning how to cope with his situation. ]
Captain. Do come in, my office is in the back.
[ The main workshop is more of a large hall littered with covered desks, boards around the walls littered with scrawlings in a language he doubts anyone but those from his universe will be able to read. Hux steps back from the doorway with a polite smile, the same small thrill to have Jim as a guest still present. ]
no subject
Thanks.
[ He steps inside and immediately starts looking around, taking in all the details, even if most of the tables are covered up. He doesn't linger there for long, following Hux's instructions and making his way towards the back. ]
And thank you for inviting me, too. That was— unexpected, but nice.
no subject
[ A glance at Hux's schematics reveals an engineering mind, with annotations to charts and diagrams to make a Vulcan blush. He can't seem to stop working, most days. It's all that keeps him going.
His office is modest but cosy, with the set-up for a bed-and-chair facing each other over a small fold-out table still there, set with two foil wrappers. He waves to these and heads to the counter with the kettle. ]
Help yourself.
no subject
[ So yes Hux he's sticking to calling you nice, it's gross. Just accept it and move on, it's easier for everyone involved.
Part of him wants to poke around and peer into Hux's work, but he knows better than to pry. Maybe sometime later he'll ask if he can have a look, but for now there's a table set up all neatly and the office has obviously been rearranged to welcome him, and he smiles to himself when he spots the two wrapped items on the table.
He makes his way over and takes a seat on the chair, unwrapping his sandwich but waiting for Hux before taking a bite. ]
So how're you settling in so far?
no subject
Ah, tolerably. [ Organa will almost certainly be pouring any funding away from his department and Pierce is apparently Ren's new unspoken Master, Hux has no real desire to work with the latter after meeting the man and gaining a sense of how canny and possessive he is of Ren but his options are limited. ] I'll have to petition the portal to bring through some materials that are not indigenous to this moon, so I'm waiting on that, as far as my work goes.
As for everything else I don't mind all the rain, but the flooding will be a problem.
no subject
Yeah, I wouldn't mind the rain either, if only it was less... intense. [ He sits back on the chair and relaxes, picking at the ingredients on his sandwich but waiting for Hux to join him before digging in. ] Just hope this won't cause a lot of lasting damage, particularly near the walls.
no subject
I admit, it feels like I'm waiting for the same to happen here.
[ The tea is quietly poured for both men and Hux nibbles on his toastie in between speaking, at ease in his chair. ]
Hopefully to neither you or I.
no subject
[ Which isn't to say that student had it coming, but in these situations it's better safe than sorry. Jim can't talk much, back at the Academy he'd have been just the type to leap into danger if given the opportunity, just to see if he could. ]
Hopefully not to anyone. [ He shakes his head a little, taking a whiff from his tea. It's hot, so his first sip is short and careful. ] We've been putting up some barriers along the riverbank, keeping people away. Hopefully no one will try to pull some crazy stunt, or get too close.
no subject
[ His smirk holds a tease, flashed over the cup of bitter tea he stirs atop crossed legs. Hux snorts softly. ]
I would have liked to work on improving the wall. Laserfield grids could have done so much to stop the beasts entering through the floods, albeit not the water itself.
no subject
[ He shoots back with a wide grin, tipping his head up a little. He'll never not want to keep people safe, though. His own sense of self-preservation ends where everyone else's safety begins, no matter who they are. ]
There's still a lot to work on and improve on the walls— both around the Quarantine and the Abandoned City. It'll take a lot of repairing first, granted, but once the flood is over, I don't see why you can't do that.
no subject
He briefly imagines tossing Jim into the floodwaters first-hand. ]
Yes, well ... As to that, I have an alarmingly low stockpile of suppliers and there are people within the Guard, from my home-universe, who would find it difficult to trust me. I feel certain they would sabotage any progress I made. [ Shaking his head. ] I would much prefer to get down to work and stay in this workshop indefinitely, believe me.
no subject
Really? Well, that's unfortunate. [ He mulls it over for a bit. ] I could probably get you a few things, should you ever need anything specific. Sounds kind of sad to just lock yourself up in here all day every day, though. Even outside of work, there's plenty of fun stuff to do around the Quarantine.
no subject
[ Somehow impressed by Jim's determination to lend aid (which is such a dumb thing to do without receiving any sort of favour in return, kriffing hell ... what a bleeding heart), he shakes his head and looks down at his tea. ]
You're out there as often as possible when you're not power-swimming to rescue others from the floods, then? [ What do they call it, ] "Painting the town red"?
no subject
Well, I wouldn't put it like that. I'm not exactly twenty anymore. [ His lips twitch a little, and he takes a quick bite from his toast. ] But yeah, I like to go out, have fun. Go for a movie every so often, or drinks. Riding on my bike. Among other things. Do you do things for fun, or is it all just "work work work" with you?
no subject
I ... [ Of course Jim has a full and enriching life, he's a powerhouse of lovable quirks and goodness and purity of kriffing heart. Horrid. ] I went to a pet store.
[ So why does Hux struggle so hard to find something to offer up in return? He senses he may not have achieved that with his selection. ]
There are no animals allowed on the ships, of course, it's been a while since I saw any. [ Millicent being the exception because no one knows about her. ] They have quite the number of felines, I suspect with the heavy rainfall the shelters are full too.
no subject
Actually Jim's sort of endeared when Hux brings up a pet store. That's so... 'unexpected' is the best word he can think of. He fights the urge to smile wider at Hux, and just settles with a faint nod instead. ]
We don't really have pets on board either. [ It's not outright forbidden, but it was just too complicated. Jim sure wouldn't have risked an animal's safety like that. ] So— you like cats. You did strike me as a cat person. Thinking of adopting one?
no subject
[ Train another one, he almost said. Millicent is well-trained, docile, and quiet, the perfect companion. He gets the feeling a rowdy kitten wouldn't have the same effect. ]
What do you mean, 'a cat person'?
no subject
[ Plus, Hux could always adopt one that's already all grown up and well-trained. Not nearly as many headaches, that's for sure. ]
Oh. That's just something people say where I'm from. Cats and dogs are the most common pets back on Earth, so there's this... saying, I guess. That you're either a cat person or a dog person. The implication being that cat people are more indoors-y, introverted, the kind to enjoy an afternoon curled up on the couch reading or watching movies, and dog people like the outdoors, adventures, exercising and are more extroverted.
A poor stereotype, I guess. Besides, nothing's to stop someone from liking or adopting both.
