( video & action; un: kirk ) come fly with me
[ Jim's face greets the network, blue eyes alight with excitement and a big, happy smile on his face. He's dressed all proper in a flight suit, hair with that annoyingly perfect curl over his forehead, and behind him a glimpse of the front of the shuttle he's been working on can be seen. ]
Good morning, everyone! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Captain James T. Kirk, and for the six months I've been in the Quarantine, I've been a member of the Perimeter Guard as a surveyor. A couple of months ago, I took a small team to the waterfalls as we tracked down a mystery signal, and found an abandoned vessel there, buried in a cave. We brought it back with us, but it was severely damaged and it took a lot of work and sleepless hours to get it back into shape. However, it wasn't wasted time. I'd like to present to you all— [ He stands up and moves behind his device, so the camera focuses fully on the shuttle. ] the PGS Intrepid! [ ta-daaah ] She's good as new and fully functional now, and I'm excited to say she's ready to go well beyond the walls and all around the whole moon.
[ He comes into the view of the camera again, retaking his seat in front of it. ]
The shuttle is an invaluable asset of the Quarantine, and with her restoration, a new branch of the Perimeter Guard has been established: aerial survey and exploration. So far it's only Poe Dameron and myself, but I'd love to see more skilled pilots and explorers joining us.
Likewise, if you'd like to pilot the shuttle and have the skills to do so, but don't want to commit to that specific branch of the guard, there will also be flight permits available to any skilled pilots who might want to use the shuttle for quick trips and various missions.
On both these circumstances, there should be a small flight test to assess your skills.
Now, if you only have minimal or no knowledge whatsoever, but you're interested in learning, we'll also be offering piloting lessons, ranging from basic to more advanced depending on your current skill.
Should anyone have any further questions, feel free to respond here, or drop me a line through my personal inbox. I'm also often at the Perimeter Guard, and anyone's welcome to come by. In that case, you can also take a closer look at the shuttle.
[ He sits up, smile growing a hint wider. ] Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you. Kirk out.
(( ooc: open to both network replies and action threads @ the perimeter guard! feel free to check out the post about the new aerial survey & exploration branch of the perimeter guard (and also jooooin uuuuus). actual interactions aren't mandatory, and we can definitely handwave your character signing up for classes/taking the flight test/poking around/whatever, so don't feel like we have to play out any of it! ))

He turns around to look at her, nodding. ] Yes. What do you think? Fitting name?
no subject
Intrepid suits it. Suits its captain.
no subject
[ He sits a little more upright, smiling proudly. ] I think so too. I expect we'll be out there exploring a lot of this moon together.
no subject
Erso's my name. [ aka he could have named it after her, but nope, she'd fucked that up. ]
It'll be all flying and no walking from here on out.
no subject
Ah. And then she'd be named after a woman. [ Yes he gets it now. His lips quirk a little in amusement. ] Maybe Cassian will find a shuttle too; then he can name it after you.
[ He rather likes the name he picked, though. Fitting, like she said. ]
Will you be joining in on all that flying?
no subject
No, [ she shakes her head. ] I will be Cassian's emergency back up, but that is it. I'm not a pilot.
[ her piloting was confined to youth and one time only escapes. since it's jyn, predictably it ended badly. ]
no subject
Well, if you're ever interested, you can always take up some lessons. [ Just a suggestion, although he doesn't press on that topic. ] If Cassian joins, will you be tagging along when we fly out?
no subject
[ kirk has already noticed they're too close, when it comes to missions they're kind of going to be a package deal. at least until one or both of them gets over the trauma of scarif -- which might take more than just their first couple of months not being dead. ]
I had lessons when I was a teenager, but there was never any cause for me to fly.
no subject
Honestly, at first I wanted to learn it just because I liked it. Didn't need much of a reason. Some people might want to fly just because they like the sensation.
no subject
[ literally has not understood this since she was a teenager. ]
no subject
I'm not sure I can properly explain it to you, if you really don't understand. It's just... a very unique kind of freedom, a whole new universe of possibilities that can open up for anyone going up there.
no subject
I guess it doesn't feel like a special freedom if that is just... reality. [ even on the run she was never tied down until she was in prison. she used to like the jump to hyperspace when she was small, now it is only a means of escape. ]
no subject
Of course it's special. Things don't stop being special just because they become reality, rather than a hope or a dream. I mean, they might not be special to you, which is perfectly valid. But they might be special to other people.

Iowa? [ also ??? corn ??? ]
no subject
Well— Iowa's one of the several states that make up the country of the United States of America, back on Earth. It's where I'm from. Grew up on this small town called Riverside. Mostly farmers and shipbuilders and a lot of Starfleet cadets and officers all year round. [ He clarifies, ] There's a Starfleet shipyard there, so that's why.
no subject
You grew up around ships.
[ of course he did. ]
no subject
[ So no, he didn't spend a lot of his time going off to see the shipyard. Well, he sort of did, but not with awe and fascination like she might think. Mostly he just glared at them and cursed Starfleet in his head for the shitty childhood he got. ]
no subject
Why?
no subject
Because it took my father from me. The way I saw it back then, anyway.
[ So basically, a super healthy attitude on his end. ]
no subject
What changed?
no subject
[ That's all it is, a matter of perspective. He was on the other side and now he stands on the other, where his father once was; now he understands. ]
It was his choice all along. You know? He was faced with an impossible situation and he had a choice to make, and... I get it now. Because I would have done the same. [ A pause, ] I have done the same. I was just luckier than he was.
no subject
Well. I suppose I'll have to sign up for you to let me go out with Cassian, yeah?
no subject

[ and she pushes herself back outta the room. much better manners this time. ]
