How do you go about picking gifts?

[ He's just going to dive right in. No real introduction, but Steve figures that most people won't care too much about who is asking this or why. ]

I'm sure a lot of you are better at this than I am, so I guess I need some advice. How do you find a good gift for someone that already has far more than you've seen for half your lifetime? Not that I'm aiming to impress anyone, but it'd be nice to pull it off.

[ He grins a little. Okay, so maybe he's trying. Just a little. But Steve is rarely the one that surprises anyone else. He just wants a chance at doing something cool for a change. Of course, he's realistic and knows this is unlikely, but he can try. ]

I'm in a little over my head on this one. Everyone else always has the flashy stuff covered.

[ The way Steve's expression turns to something knowing and even says that he also hears the meaning that goes unspoken. ]

Is it really?

I'm not going to blame my friends for not thinking of gifts when I've never asked for them. [ Caleb frowns just a little, looking away from the camera briefly. ]

I ended up here on my birthday. That probably says a lot about me, doesn't it?

That you're an interesting person?

[ He knows what Caleb likely meant, but Steve refuses to indulge the potential negativity. ]

You're seeing new worlds, things a lot of people don't even know about. That's pretty amazing.

Definitely one way of looking at it.

Back home a lot of my friends are from affluent families. It can be weird giving gifts to people in that kind of...society.

It's the best way I know.

[ And the guy seems to need some cheering up. ]

Do they think your gifts are that strange?

No I mean...more like gifts turn into transactions when your parents have a lot of money. People think you're trying to buy them, or want something from them. That's all.

[ Steve recognizes the truth in that, and his face falls a bit at the thought. Not only of Loki possibly thinking of his gifts as a kind of bribe, but for Caleb, who must have gone through a lot of that. It can't have been easy. ]

But you found gifts that worked. That meant something, even when your friends and their families were used to being disappointed. I guess I just need to try harder.

Well, I tried. My family was much the same way, so.

[ Because Caleb also came from that same monied background, he just has the awareness of how weird it is. ]

I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. A lot of gift giving is super commercialized anyway, so I think gifts from the heart are the way to go.

That's kind of a sad way of looking at it. I think all gifts should come from the heart.

[ Caleb clearly needs more gifts. ]
